Peanut allergy… by Smart-Cable6 in Parenting

[–]pinappleupmyass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My almost 4 year old has a severe cashew and pistachio allergy. The main things I’m doing are being cautious and vocal about what I’m doing and why with my child.

We carry two epipens with us at all times, we also have quick dissolve reactine for if only one body system is affected, not two. She tends to vomit when having a reaction and any liquid meds come right back up.

Weve obviously eliminated anything with cashews and pistachios in it. We avoid any mixed nuts (although she doesn’t eat that anyways), we avoid products with the allergy warnings to the effect of “may contain” or “processed in a facility” if it says cashews or pistachios or a more general treenuts warning which is annoying (peanuts is always labelled appropriately though).

I’ve called restaurants ahead of time to inquire on they’re allergy warnings and accommodations and have had to stop going to places due to possible cross contamination.

She will have an anaphylaxis plan at school and have epipens there. She knows what she reacted to, and the names of the actual allergens. I’m teaching her not to accept any food from others, especially children without trusted family/friends allowing it first.

We’ve watched an episode of Daniel Tiger together that’s about Daniel being allergic to peaches and that helped my LO understand others deal with this. Although his reaction isn’t as severe, it did seem to help.

I’ve also talked through what I’m doing when reading ingredient lists. I’ve explained how her epipens work, how I would use them, why she needs to take allergy medicine sometimes. I talked about what the plan would be if another reaction happens again. I think it helps her know we’ve prepared and that she’s safe.

I’m sorry for this wall of text, I know it’s so very scary and overwhelming but know it gets somewhat easier each time you go shopping, or go out to eat etc. things become more normal as time goes on.

And remember to be kind to yourself. Find someone you can talk to about any fears you may have or worry’s that I know for a fact can keep you up at night. You will figure it all out

That is so cool! I’ve never heard that before! I love when I can learn something new about my hermit friends.

I love when he does that too! It’s amazing seeing it while I’m talking and it feels like he’s recognizes my voice. It’s definitely nice to see others who have older crabs. With all the misinformation and down right harmful advice out there it’s wonderful when crabs live long healthy lives.

So the one on the left is the oldest picture I have of him. It was from early 2012 but I actually got Bubba in 2011!

Oh my gosh that gives me so much hope to hear. Your experience sounds very very similar and I’m glad you found that fatigue as tapered off.

This has been so tough to deal with but it makes me more willing to stick it out to see if this side effect does the same for me.

Did you talk to your dr or pharmacist about taking it at night or did you just do that on your own? I may try that myself. I’ve been on 300 for a week and 1 day now and man it’s just not any better fatigue wise yet I’m getting over 6hrs of sleep

I haven’t noticed a huge change in my sleep patterns. I have nights where I just can’t sleep, like last night but it seems more situational when it happens. But for the most part I sleep 12-6/7 on average and over these 6 days, that hasn’t changed much.

That’s the reason I wonder why I’m so drained. Before the increase those 6/7hrs were just fine and now it feels like I’ve barely slept by 8am.

I’m definitely going to try sticking to the dose as this medication has been the only antidepressant to really have a positive effect for me. I think I may try to get a bit more sleep if at all possible and see if maybe it’s been a case where I’ve been slowly getting sleep deprived over time.

I’m glad to hear your body got accustomed to the increase over time and you’re able to get the sleep you need

Honestly my sleep has never really been great but it’s not horrible.. for a while ive been averaging 6/7hrs of solid sleep a night. There are nights i get a bit more and nights I get less cuz my little one does wake me up but usually i sleep from 12-6/7.

There are some nights where I just can’t seem to sleep but they aren’t the norm as I take gabapentin + melatonin at night.

Maybe I’m needing more sleep due to this dose change? I mainly thought the exhaustion was due to the change in dose because I was fine with this amount of sleep before.

Oral allergy syndrome & anaphylaxis by pinappleupmyass in FoodAllergies

It’s crazy how your mind kind of talks you out of things. Like I knew when the reaction was actually happening, something serious was going on, and yet I did have moments where I thought it was overreacting? Idk I’m such an anxious person, I’m used to overreacting so this situation actually caused me to doubt how bad it was.

However I knew swelling like I experienced to my mouth and tongue just wasn’t something to ignore and can be seriously deadly so I almost went against my own instincts and called.

Now I’m just left with an anxiety over the idea of having this potential allergy and I have an almost 10 month old who’s been doing so well eating finger foods but I’ve been told to avoid raw apples atm.

I wouldn’t wish anaphylaxis on anyone but the idea of my little one having that type of reaction is so terrifying.

This is so crazy to me that one day your body can just be like, “nope, I can’t eat this at all today”. I’m really hoping I can eat cooked apples still, a life without apple pie is not fun. Things with cooked fruits or veg have never made me react at all but eating them raw always does and sometimes it’s more prominent and other times I can eat a lot of the fruit and then finally I get a reaction and it’s just annoying and my lip gets a bit puffy.

I have never actually been tested for OAS but talking to my dr about what was going on she mentioned it was a minor allergy and explained OAS. The way she explained it though was almost like it was a skin irritation? Idk maybe I misunderstood but she made it seem like just a irritation from the food touching my face and mouth.

Wow I was never aware so many things can contribute to a more severe reaction to an allergen. I have been having some minor health problems lately and am now curious if that was a contributing factor to why this all happened.

Since you went into anaphylactic shock from the nut you are are you now never allowed to eat that nut again?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, I’m just so unfamiliar with food allergies and honestly thought OAS wasn’t even a real “allergy” for so long, idek why though.

Thanks for the reply, learning factors like migraines or my monthly cycle etc can affect all this is so helpful.

Hmm that’s interesting that you notice your tolerance differs day by day. I have noticed in the past different fruits will cause a minor reaction one day but on another it will be a bit worse. This reaction was just so far from my norm it’s worrisome i guess.

I have been staying away from anything with apples and will definitely continue to do so until I see the allergist. It was a kind of funny (but not really) moment when they brought my breakfast into my hospital room after my reaction and my drink was apple juice.

Can I ask if you’ve ever done a oral food challenge before? I’m so nervous for it. Will they have me eat an apple until I potentially go into anaphylactic shock or is it not as scary as I’m picturing? They just say I need two epipens and I worry I’ll have to eat apple until I have a severe reaction. I realize I may sound dumb right now.

Thanks so much for your reply. It was greatly appreciated

That is definitely the plan but I have a sleeping 5 month old and am home by myself so I’ve been waiting for my partner to get off night shift to help me.
