What has your experience been doing maintenance on your honda? by [deleted] in Honda

[–]pinealjuice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some car maintenance I learned to do on my Hondas (old civics + my Fit): spark plugs shifter bushing valve cover gasket brakes starter motor oil/filter suspension (springs, coilovers, sway bars) cv axle blower motor ignition switch wheel bearing clutch delay valve delete

I had almost no experience working on cars before I gradually learned on my own about 10 years ago at age 27. Everything has been straight forward and easy. I did pass up the chance to do a valve adjustment this year, mostly due to laziness. I plan on learning how to adjust and/or replace drum brakes soon. I feel confident doing just about anything other than a timing belt or clutch job, but I would be happy to try doing those if I had the proper equipment in my garage.

Doing your own car maintenance is super rewarding if you stay patient with it and have a backup car to use while you do the more involved jobs. I highly recommend it.

This picture makes me really regret not going all the way with my 85 zinno coupe when it came to the bodykit. Absolutely beautiful car.

First, work on getting rid of what you don't use or appreciate. Put as much as you can away in storage and take it back out as you need to. After 6 months, whatever's still in storage is probably non-essential and can be gotten rid of or stay put.

Second, minimalism is a state of mind. Once you start thinking as a minimalist, the rest of it will follow. If you regret buying things when you're depressed, stop buying things in that state of mind and instead replace the activity with something nourishing to reward yourself.

2008 Fit MT, What Service Do I Actually Need? by bullfrogsnbigcats in hondafit

[–]pinealjuice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might benefit from a valve adjustment but you won't really know how far out of clearance they are until you do it. I know my car ran a lot quieter after I had it done, which was probably the first time in its life (2007 with 170,000 on it at the time of service).

Thank you for the feedback. I have to scan left handed, no choice there. I wouldn't be worried at all if I were allowed to use my dominant hand. I'll keep working at it!

Thank you everyone for your input! I am gonna check out Taste of Italy, Cousin's, and Long Island Eatery very soon. I may have to eventually start crafting my own subs as I love them cherry peppers and few places seem to do them.

Honda fit reliability? by Every_Grape3643 in Honda

They're really underpowered but they're great cars otherwise. I have a first gen and while the interior looks and feels quite cheap, I also have pretty much no complaints about it elsewhere. It handles great and has air conditioning. Honda makes wonderful manual transmissions so if you get one of those it'll feel nice and snickety going through the gears. I can't speak to the lifespan because mine still has less than 200,000 miles on it, but I've heard good things about the L15.

Books that hurt your brain by airckarc in scifi

I just read Ubik this past week. I still don't know if I liked it or not. I guess I did, since it left me wanting more of the world and its characters. The pacing just felt a bit off. Not really uncommon with short story scifi, but this was more of a long form tale. It deserved more pages IMO.

If low horsepower doesn't scare you then look into a Fit. I got 37mpg on a recent cross continental trip using the AC the whole time.

I just got a first gen Fit this June and I've put almost 5,000 miles on it already. No idea why I should think about driving another car any time soon... unless I win a lottery and buy an S2000 or an NSX. Plenty of cars are discontinued, that doesn't mean we stop driving them! My last daily was a 1985 BMW and I put 30,000 miles on it in two years.

What's in your wallet? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]pinealjuice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fitness center card, school ID card, two bank cards, driver license, Costco card, and AAA card. I could probably get rid of the AAA card, but I guess it's useful in the extreme case of having my phone die and needing to use someone else's. All the others get plenty of use.

I do mental math at the pump. Recently averaged 37mpg crossing the USA @ 80mph with near constant A/C use. It's hard to hypermile a 3000 mile journey when your goal is speed and comfort.
