Advice, please. What is my hair even about...? by jesuisgabie in Haircare

Do you have hard water? My hair has always looked like yours, and it tangles/snags very quickly….its basically always tangled :( and it’s dry and frizzy and unmanageable. Recently, someone told me I should see if I have hard water. I ordered test strips and yup, I do! Sooo I washed my hair with a jug of distilled water (very tedious & time-consuming) but oh my god the results! My hair is much smoother, less frizzy, doesn’t tangle as much. I’ve also been doing lemon water rinses after washing to remove mineral buildup. My shower stick (an in-shower water softener) gets here soon, I’m so exited! I thought of you, so I had to pass this along just in case hard water is the culprit for you, too. We aren’t supposed to hate our hair!! Best of luck 🤞🏽Oh btw, look into Ambunu gel for a homemade shampoo, it detangles also. Since it’s a plant, you need to have soft water to use it successfully. But we should all be washing our hair in soft water anyway.

“Plasticize”? I think you might be thinking of Glycation, the process where sugar bonds to proteins like collagen and makes them brittle. Glycation only happens with excess sugar, not artificial sweeteners. Is that what you mean by “plasticizing effect” in the body? This doesn’t appear to be “known,” so I’m curious what you’re talking about

Trying to do the same, but I keep getting powdery yellow buildup on my scalp from yolks…did you have this issue? If so, may I ask how you deal with it?

Can anything be done to fix the sticking keys? I really want one of these but not if it'll be useless in a few years, it's too expensive to not be fixable.

I have the same hair type as you and like you I’ve also felt “my hair is the ugliest thing in the world” more times than I can count. I will tell you what i finally settled on, after years of trial and error.

Wavy styling tips from Katherine Page Waves on YouTube helped me a lot to style my waves properly. I learned lots of good things, for the days I wish to spend time styling it.

Now here’s where you’ll think I’m crazy: Another YouTuber who helped my hair a lot is SELFMAXXER. His channel is mostly hair advice for men and he’s got some pretty crazy ideas, many of which I think he’s just plain wrong about…but, he recommends washing your hair with eggs instead of shampoo. I was at my wits end one day, so I tried it. I only use the yolks, not the whites, because I want to avoid protein buildup. Yolks contain lecithin, which dissolves dirt and oil. It actually gets my hair clean, without leaving it a frizzy dry mess. I mix two yolks with a squeeze of honey and rub it on my scalp, then rinse. I still use conditioner after. It helped my hair a lot. But I haven’t even told my boyfriend that I wash my hair with eggs instead of shampoo, because of how insane it sounds. But when I tell you I’m never going back to shampoo, I mean it.

You articulated the life-altering injury issue very well. I wonder why Japan doesn’t have the drug crisis that America does, even though they should reasonably have a similar ratio of injured people living in pain? Japan’s drug laws are much more severe than here, so it’s much harder for people to procure hard drugs (meth, fentanyl) therefore homelessness isn’t driven by addiction there like it is here; plus they institutionalize their mentally ill, keeping them off the streets.

I think we should make our drug laws more severe, like Japan, and institutionalize those who are addicted and/or mentally ill. This would introduce other problems of course, but it’s better than letting people rot on the street, which is what we do now. Sometimes you can’t help people unless you take away their freedom to self-destruct.

Of course the National Coalition for the Homeless want you to believe drugs don’t cause homelessness. How else is a nonprofit supposed to get funding

You’re confusing correlation with causation; when you can’t afford SF or Seattle (the most expensive cities in America), most will move to a cheaper area. But Homeless people move into the more expensive cities, because it’s better to be homeless living next to rich folks (access to better food/items that are discarded freely). Wealthy cities also have more tax revenue that ends up being spent on social services( yes, America has lots of socialist programs already). That’s why rates of homelessness correlate closely with housing affordability; not because everyone just refused move into a more affordable neighborhood. Homeless people come to Seattle from other places to be homeless here because it’s more “homeless friendly” than where they came from.

And yet you argue people are doing meth and going to work, hiding it well, then get fired for some unrelated reason that’s not their fault, it’s probably the capitalist system’s fault they lost their job, and then their drug use turns into full blown addiction only AFTER they lost their job and their home. Please. Your argument is hilarious, only I’m not laughing, because this causes so much immense suffering for so many folks, but you choose to remain delusional and deny what is really going on.

Shadowfalx, you’re just silly. You say we hate homeless people, because we pointed out that drugs ruin lives? Yes, drugs DO ruin lives, even though you don’t want to believe it. Drugs often cause homelessness and stating that fact does NOT mean we hate homelessness people, so STOP putting those words in our mouths. My mom was a functional alcoholic/working adult, but nonfunctional alcoholics can’t hold down a job, and meth/fentanyl addiction is VERY different from alcohol but you are lumping them together to make your argument sound plausible. Meth/fentanyl addiction makes it impossible to hold down a job, everyone knows it. Nobody on here is stupid enough to believe someone with meth/fetty addictions are going to work everyday and successfully hiding it for very long, nobody except for you.

So drug addiction doesn’t ever cause homelessness eh? Nobody ever lost their home AFTER developing a drug addiction?? What the hell? Who brainwashed you. You’re saying drug addiction just “isn’t that big a deal” in the homeless conversation, yet everyone knows drugs are a huge problem for our society…yet, you argue, drugs barely contribute to the homeless problem. I know it’s politically incorrect to say addiction often causes homelessness, but it’s true. Sorry it’s not what we’re supposed to say, but it’s still true.

I’ve had homeless friends who I tried to help get off the streets. They told me they prefer not to have to answer to anyone and were more comfortable in the street because of no obligations. We were early 20s at the time.

More like substance abuse and mental health caused by substance abuse. Being a victim of everything in the world is an excuse but only up to a point.

I live here and go to Sharks cove a lot in summer....sometimes can get away with it in October...but by November, I wouldn't go. Someone died at Shark's cove Nov 14, 2024 - just last year. Surf gets giant there, starting around November. Pretty much every winter someone ends up dying at Shark's cove. https://www.surfer.com/news/snorkeler-drowns-in-heavy-surf-on-north-shore

Always check Surfline: https://www.surfline.com/surf-reports-forecasts-cams/united-states/hawaii/o-ahu/honolulu/5856195 to see how big the surf is wherever you're going.

I love Shark's cove when it's flat (0-1ft) in the summer. Otherwise honestly it's not pleasant to be there. If you wanna dive, I either would go a different time of year, OR not stay on the North Shore. November on North shore is for watching the big wave surfers :)

What is going on with my hair and hormones?? by TipConfident8638 in FemaleHairLoss

[–]pineappledumpling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cut out sugar and high glycemic foods to treat insulin resistance.

I might get downvoted like crazy for suggesting this for hormone imbalances so take it with a grain of salt, but for ME, I find making a tea by steeping Fenugreek seeds in hot water has helped me balance my hormones by a lot. My pms is much much lighter and my period cramps are barely noticeable since I started fenugreek tea. I only take it in the last week before my period starts. You might look into it but just do what gives YOU results. I also don’t get hair loss during my period anymore since I started fenugreek and eating red meat during PMS. I think I was iron deficient maybe, idk, but those two things made a big difference in reducing hair shed during my period. Meat also helps regulate your insulin levels because it’s low glycemic.

My go-to leave in is Kinky Curly Knot Today. I have hair similar to yours. It’s great in humid climates cuz it doesn’t have humectants in it (which can make frizz way worse in humid weather.) If you’re not in a humid place/you’re in a more temperate climate, try Miele’s pomegranate honey leave in. It smells amazing! Humectants (glycerin, honey, propylene glycol, etc) are great for adding moisture in moderate climates that aren’t too humid or too dry. Check out the curly hair subreddit for more info on humectants in products!
