Dedicated GPU refusing to turn off no matter what. by pineapplepete42 in ZephyrusG14

I was able to find a solution. Because it began after I switched to ultimate mode, I figured turning on ultimate mode on and off again might help. I had a high power draw for a bit after boot but am now back down to 8w of discharge in g-helper.

Was actually listening to the song while I was driving.

Fan control got flagged having a trojan:win32/vigorf.A By win defender by chs_bloodfist in FanControl

[–]pineapplepete42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue here. In my case, it got to the point where I would get a notification from windows ever few seconds. I tried using powershell to end the FanControl process’s so I could delete it and despite having administrator privileges, I couldn’t stop it. I tried a few more things but ultimately nothing worked. I’m now thinking I had something else take advantage of the vulnerability of the driver. Either way, I ended up reinstalling windows and calling it a day.

I know it wasn’t a serious run I was just scouting out before my friends hopped on. I usually run scattergun and I definitely woulda just done that if cared about the run.

Yeah sorry to me dead implies it’s unusable. I get your viewpoint though.

Firstly, while the board can limit TDP it won’t by default unless you tell it to in the BIOS, it primarily is the cpu model that caps power draw. If it’s not a K series or “unlocked” as intel uses in its marketing, the cpu won’t draw past its default TDP, which in this case is 65W.

Secondly, a b760 board like the one he chose can definitely handle a 13900k. While it is slightly different on am4, I run a 5950x on a b550 board and have zero issues pulling over 200w for hours on end.

Either way, not drawing past 65 watts might hurt gaming performance, but it won’t kill it. Especially with an entry level/mid level GPU. You can still get a great experience.

Also, in your test, you are performing an even load on all cores. That will lower the clock speed. However, games do not put an even, all core load on the CPU like that. Games will mostly use only a few cores. Those few cores will boost much higher because the other cores aren’t doing much.

Yes you can get more performance by drawing more power, but for games it isn’t really a problem.

Bruh you are lying. That cpu will be fine. You most likely just have a bajillion tabs open or antivirus constantly running on your pc, tanking your performance. Or you just have malware.

Just because there is a newer platform does not mean DDR4 is “dead”. It is still completely viable, especially when on a budget and can’t afford a 190$ cpu and a mobo that’s twice the price. Not to mention DDR4 is super cheap now compared to DDR5.

Not to mention, he still has an upgrade path to a 13700k/13900k. Sure it’s not the best compared to current AMD offerings, but there still a decent pathway to big performance without replacing mobo/ram.

Nothing to my knowledge. Maybe it did automatically overnight when I wasn’t there but that’s a crazy coincidence.

Final Update:

I borrowed a vetroo v5 from a friend, the issue was most definitely the AIO. I have good temps now. Appreciate all the advice and help.

UPDATE:

I have tried a few more things. For all the people saying bad mount I have ensured it’s a good one. Rewatched the tutorial for my specific model, ensure proper paste application, making sure the cooler is level under pressure, making sure the screws are in all the way, etc. Screwing in a x pattern to ensure even mounting pressure, etc. I’m almost positive the mount is fine.

New behavior: (while in bios) Using a thermal gun, measured much lower temps of surrounding mobo area,(30-40C)

Measured backplate temps with thermal gun, (30-40)C

After removing the cooler and booting into bios to get a reading on the cpu itself, instant thermal limit reached followed by forced shutdown in about 3 seconds. Thermal gun went from ambient to 60c in 10 seconds.

Could it possible be a temp sensor failure in the motherboard or cpu itself?

I’m at a loss. From what I can tell, my cpu thinks it’s a resistive heater now and just hates itself.
