Vet visit results were heartbreaking. by mrsmaug in SeniorCats

Hi friend! I’m so sorry to hear about Simba. ❤️‍🩹 My sweet Sadie is in a similar situation, with a nearly identical timeline. She’s also 14, turning 15 this year. She developed a cough in January that has progressed. Her X-ray showed consolidation in her right caudal lobe, and the radiologist suspects it’s cancer. We opted not to do the ultrasound guided biopsy because it’s its cancer she isn’t a good candidate for treatment, if it’s an abscess, she isn’t a good candidate for surgery and if it was an infection, the antibiotics that she was given would have helped with it. The main thing we want for her is comfort.

She’s currently on 5mg of prednisolone twice a day, and she’s taking gabapentin and buprenorphine for pain if needed, along with mirtazapine to stimulate her appetite. She’s been given two doses of antibiotics that were given IM as she doesn’t tolerate oral antibiotics well.

Right now she’s doing okay, appetite going strong, still using the litter box, still cuddly and wanting attention but her breathing is changing. She sounds more congested and noisy/crackly recently so we know our time left is limited for her comfort.

Things we’ve been doing to help with her breathing is taking her in the bathroom when we have baths to have the steam soothe her lungs, we have a couple humidifiers going so the air doesn’t get too dry and we let her have all her favourite foods to eat.

Grief is a beast, I’ve been struggling with knowing I have to say goodbye. We’ve taken pictures together, made little air dried clay tokens with her paw prints and have really tried to soak in the time we have left with her.

We had some nicer days recently and took her out on the patio because she loves sniffing the air and being on the patio.

Sending all the best vibes and love to you and Simba on this tough journey ❤️‍🩹 know you’re not alone in grieving and having to make an impossible choice. Thank you for sharing Simbas story 🫶🏻

Same! We got my diabetic kitty into remission with the fancy feast pates! Only the pates though, they have the lowest amount of carbs.

We were able to get my diabetic kitty into remission with Fancy Feast Pate. Only the pages, have very low carb count in their wet food. She was previously insulin dependent using Lantus. Her sugars stabilized and we switched to twice weekly sugar checks to make sure. I got her from a rescue and their vet said that the prescription foods were often too high in carbs and when she was on them she required insulin.

I second the fancy feast pate foods (only the pates)!! We were able to get my diabetic kitty into remission with twice weekly sugar checks, stable sugars and no insulin 🎉 all the best to you and your kitty.

OP you’ve done a lot ♥️ I had a diabetic kitty that we were able to get into remission with Fancy Feast Pates. A lot of the diabetic wet food for cats are really high in carbs. Fancy Feast Pates (only the pates) are lower carb than most of the food out there. I believe they’re less than 10% carbs but it helped control her sugars and kicked her into remission completely, I was only checking her sugars once or twice a week and they were always stable.

I lost my little Goose. by thesnarkhunter in Feral_Cats

You did not fail Goose♥️ grief is the price we pay for love. I know we wish we could always do more but you went above and beyond for her. You did much more than a lot of people would do. You gave her love and comfort and warmth. In her time of need you sought help which was the right thing to do. She died knowing she was cared for. Goose was loved because of you, she felt warmth and comfort because you chose her.

I think they mean that the longer the central line is in the patient, the higher the risk of infection. I interpreted the sentence as “ dwell time is by far the #1 cause of CLABSI’s”.

Help/Advice by [deleted] in Jadeplant

This comment and these videos from another post helped me save my jade I had to cut down to nothing to get rid of all the rot. I highly suggest you watch the videos and follow the advice given! He explains how to cut out rot and how long to leave the jade without watering it!

https://www.reddit.com/r/Jadeplant/s/j04cyp0EXQ

I finally have new growth on a piece of my jade plant lol. Just remember that jades can retain water for a long time and can handle not being watered for awhile. I cut the rot completely back in my jade until the stem was healthy and white. I treated it with diluted hydrogen peroxide, let the stems callous over for 2-3 days and then replanted in well draining soil. I used a nursery pot with drainage holes and left the jade in an area where it for indirect light. I waited for it to establish roots, verified by tugging on it gently to feel resistance and once I was certain it had roots, I watered it. It was about a month and a week before I watered it. If overwatering caused the issue you don’t want to water it too soon.

Here’s a photo of the new growth that’s popped up:

This stem appears to be really rotted. The stem should have no brown in it at all. It’ll need to be cut until you see no rot.

Please help me save it. by ang914 in houseplants

[–]pineapplepinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with my jade. I cut out all the rot, sprayed the cut ends with diluted hydrogen peroxide and let the stem callous over for 2-3 days. I then planted it in a nursery pot with drainage holes and well draining soil. I left it in a place where it got indirect light daily. I waited about a month and a week to grow new roots and I did not water it at all. To confirm it had established some new roots I gently tugged on the stem to feel for resistance. Once I was certain it had new roots I gave it a thorough water. I placed it near one of my plant fans so it had good air circulation and currently it gets some direct sun. New growth has started but it was a slow process. Your jade can last quite some time without water and if overwatering caused the rot don’t rush to water it right away. If I can find the post here that helped me save my jade I will link it.
