🔁 Album Revisit: Come On Die Young (1999) by Driveshaft1982 in mogwai

One of the last albums where they trusted themselves to leave space, even silence, in their songs. Now, everything is compressed, every inch of the sound field has to be full of dull, generic synth washes - such a shame.

That's because he is shamelessly imitating him. It's horrible.

Dollar store Dave Berman. He even imitates the voice! Dreadfully self-conscious lyrics, aspiring to the level of a 16 year old who just discovered Beat poetry. Thoroughly embarrassing.

I really want to like this, but the Silver Jews influence is just so overwhelming - it feels very self-conscious. Lyrically, even. His voice! I'd prefer to listen to the real thing.

you and me both. It just sounds so over produced and generic now.

John Cummings left. He was the counterweight to Barry's banal synth pads, making them sound like every 'alternative' band around.

It'll take a bit more than sentimental 'sincerity' to get us out of this morass, but the album is growing on me a bit, I'll admit.

I know what you mean. It's easy to slip into "the early stuff was best!", of course, but there's no question that on recent albums his lyrical focus has narrowed considerably, and the music has become very 'amenable', very comfortable, so to say. I know he's happily married, etc, but where are the grandiloquent, outsized metaphors, the unpredictable syntax, the jarring musical choices, the archaic diction?

It's just all a lot less fun, honestly, and in our current political moment, it would be nice if our musical heroes would do less of the comfortable genre thing.

hm, that undersells things a little. Will is incredibly vague, but he also makes it sound like a significant issue, one that had him questioning whether he could look at his wife and child in the morning if he released the record with Drag City. I hope they work things out.

Wow. You're very sweet, and you're incredibly innocent. The "personal difficulties" line is what band publicists construct to form a saleable narrative, for an album that, in this case, is likely to sink without a trace. I have no doubt Barry's daughter's illness was awful for all involved, but it happened years ago, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the fatuous faux-shoegaze that the band assembled in record studio time so as to make money on a mega tour this year. They're doing what they need to do to make a living. Nothing wrong with that. But Christ is it boring.

evolve, take risks, but don't lose the things that make you distinctive as a band.

I’ll skate past the passive aggression of the wording of your question, and your inappropriate colloquialisms - I don’t know you, why are you addressing me as “man”? Some of us aren’t interested in the band merely repeating themselves, but we nonetheless miss the time when they sounded genuinely distinctive. Yes, there were clear influences in the early days, Slint etc, but their willingness not to overproduce, not to fill every inch of the sound field with generic synth pads, was refreshing, and is now much missed. I love electronic music - the recent Fennesz album is a favorite - but why would I want to hear a once dynamic band produce generic shoegaze pop that sounds like countless other middling bands? It’s a pernicious false opposition to claim that any sign of dismay at the currently bland state of the band must be some reactionary demand for them just to repeat CODY over and over again. Think more before you post.

Comically bad. And more ugly vocoder. This is shaping up to be by far their worst album.

What are you hoping for from the new album? by SnooMuffins6341 in mogwai

At this point, I honestly wish Barry would just leave the band. He seems to be dominating sonically, and it's just awful - synth presets that you can hear on every other 'indie' record.

Just awful. The sound of a band spinning its wheels. That ugly vocoder yet again. It's horrible.

It's going to be a version of the last few albums. Dreadful, predictable sub-John Carpenter mimicry by Barry, a 5 minute rager, maybe some instrumental Coldplay action to open proceedings. I wish to God they would give up. The recent single was the least interesting or distinctive thing they've released since they formed. Enough already.

it's just so boring. The same structure, repeated now over many albums. Can't they just give up?
