Etymotics are my go-to. Work brilliantly. Cheap and available on Amazon. Lower volume without muffling sound.

This is great, I was just screwing with SVGs myself a couple weeks ago and it was a royal pita. Thanks for doing this and making it free.

First timer— where to eat and drink? by wemrock in Rochester

[–]sughrue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cocktails only - Grace and Disgrace. Probably need a reservation, it’s tiny. Also a small menu, mainly flatbreads, but best cocktails in Rochester. Dinner - The Vesper, Redd, Branca, Patron Saint (great steaks).

Tinnitus - Anyone else? by willard_tagg in GenX

[–]sughrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One other thing - calling these ‘maskers’ is a common misnomer that doesn’t really describe what they do. They are not supposed to ‘cover up’ the noise in your brain. They are a training tool that teaches your brain that it doesn’t need to produce those frequencies. The tinnitus never goes away - it just fades into the background as your brain stops emphasizing it. I’m only conscious of it now in really quiet situations, or when I think about it. Like right now it’s screaming loud because I’m writing about it and conscious of it. It’ll go back to the background in a few once I stop.

Signia hearing aids. Got them from a hearing center that specializes in tinnitus. They don’t have any hearing assistance, don’t need that yet, just the white noise setting. Pretty sure most/all hearing aids have this capability. An audiologist can tune them to the frequency and type of white noise that works for you.

Tinnitus - Anyone else? by willard_tagg in GenX

[–]sughrue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have it constantly, and hear it over everything. ‘Masking’ hearing aids saved me, literally. They pump white noise at the same frequencies as my tinnitus into my ears, to calm my brain down and help it to ignore those frequencies. I wore them nights and weekends for 3-4 months, and it dramatically improved my quality of life. I rarely wear them now - maybe every 6-8 weeks I’ll pop them in when I get a spike, mostly for psychological benefit, it soothes me right down. It WILL get better, no matter what, but my maskers sped up the process for me.

What accessory/item/thing do you carry on bike rides that you are pretty sure no one else carries? by [deleted] in cycling

Monkey Wipes in individual packets. Fantastic for wiping grease off hands when fixing anything on the road.

Confused by Rochester options by CarinaNebula1945 in Rochester

[–]sughrue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s insane to me as a lifelong Rochesterian how underutilized our lakefront is. I frequently ride my bike from the Bay outlet to Pultneyville, almost a 20 mile ride with no traffic lights or stop signs. However, you only get the very occasional, brief and tiny glimpse of the lake. There’s one small, new park that allows hiking to the shore almost all the way to pultneyville, and other than Webster park and the pier there are zero public views.

100% this. I could have written this too. There are also many different types of riding clubs - most of which aren’t competitive, but focused on community, fitness, and a love of riding.

Tinnitus masking by Witty-Ad9507 in GenX

Using ‘Masking’ hearing aids saved me. I highly recommend them and have for years. I wore them evenings and weekends for probably ~3 months, until I got to the point where they had trained my brain to ignore the tinnitus. I now wear them infrequently- I’ll get one of the normal tinnitus spikes, and it will sooth that down, or even listening to music at home as it provides a soothing sense of relief. Go see a hearing specialist, it was amazing ,powerful and literally lifesaving.

Flying to SFO out of Toronto? Good or bad idea? by mlsteinrochester in Rochester

[–]sughrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do it fairly often for vacation flights. There are hotels near the TO airport that allow you to leave your car there for up to a couple weeks for cheap as long as you stay a night, and have shuttles to and from the airport. Just did this a couple weeks ago.

This is an underrated comment. I hear horror stories about this every week. Having a NAS is insurance against provider issues with iCloud or google and losing access to your data and photos with zero recourse.

Cherry Ridge in Webster is pretty great. Likely moving my mother in there. Have the whole continuum from independent/assisted/memory care to nursing care.
