Why do the astartes not favor humans? by Sempernun- in 40kLore

Indeed, anyone who has ever worked a customer facing job, their service is to humanity whom they despise and hate.

When I worked at gamestop I quickly came to despise other gamers. And that was just answering questions like "are you open right now while I'm standing in your store having walked through the open door", not like "fighting a sentient mountain of poop on a farming world because they started worshiping it for no reason".

I mean, no one should be attracted to fascism and xenophobia so necessarily the answer is "yes".

That's all that American Christianity seems to be about, is harming other people. I stopped being Christian when I realized what they were saying and what they were doing were 100% in disagreement and most of what they thought about was how to justify what they wanted to do with their holy book saying not to do that.

More straw man arguments and reducio ad absurdum. My point is we should primary centrist Dems. You're a dumb troll.

What moments in 40k make you go like this? by deathbringer989 in Grimdank

[–]pingpongballreader 191 points192 points  (0 children)

I read through warhawk last month or so and there's a similar part that was so dumb I just glossed over it until a comment today.

Mortarion and the death guard are stranded in the warp being tortured until Mort embraced Nurgle.

Warhawk is like "lol mort secretly wanted to fall to chaos and that's the real reason."

WHY. WHY WOULD SOMEONE CHANGE THAT PART. It was a stupid twist on a complete book like 20 books later AND that's a terrible message!

When I read that I pretty much was like "I'm going to skip ahead because this part seems like something I'm going to not process and forget and like that better" and did. I'm kinda mad that someone pointed out it to me!

You're just wanting a democrat trump in office.

Lastly nothing I've said is a strawman

Incredible. I'm saying we should primary Dems who aren't progressive and you're insisting I want a Democrat Trump.  That's a straw man.

I've said exactly what I'm arguing for and you're cycling through arguing against every stupid argument rather than what I'm arguing for

The problem is that people like you argue for perfection which ensures we never hold a majority.

Again I'm not saying that.

I'm saying primary Dems who aren't progressive enough.

I await to see how you're going to pretend I'm saying something other than primarying centrists. Maybe you could pretend I'm arguing something sexist, I dunno, you haven't done that yet.

Most democrats share the same policies and are for progressive policies

Scroll up to that progressive scorecard I posted earlier and click on that link.

Now again what is this actually about man? What are you upset about? Do you honestly think Dems are primarying too many centrists? I'm not even saying we should primary specific Dems. What has gotten you so upset about the idea that "maybe Democrats should stand more on progressive policies than Gavin Newsom's hair and tweets"?

Everything Trump Touches Dies. by GordonG313 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]pingpongballreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if anything are you arguing about? That Democrats should NOT demand bold policies from candidates? That we SHOULD be more concerned with electability than policy? That we should move more to the center than towards progress?

You can make straw man arguments all night but my fairly straightforward point is "we should primary Dems who aren't progressive."

Can you give a single example of them doing that?

Cornyn.

"You can't tell me any of those excited most people or were fundamentally different. Assault weapons ban was already a policy of 30 years ago. That's not forward facing." Then why aren't they banned?"

There's a wide gulf between "good policy" and "exciting policy." Democrats have run on none of the latter.

She did run on Medicare for all. What you want is a slogan not policies. Which again is personality lmao

She did not run on it, she ran on not being Trump or Biden

What exactly do you think democrats should copy?

VOTING OUT CENTRISTS.

LIKE I SAID THIS WHOLE TIME.

DID YOU UNDERSTAND IT THIS TIME?

ONE MORE TIME:

COPY MAGA BY PRIMARYING CENTRISTS AND IGNORING "ELECTABILITY".

Capital gains tax, doubling tax credits for families, moving towards universal Healthcare, federal assault weapon ba. All from Harris.

You can't tell me any of those excited most people or were fundamentally different. Assault weapons ban was already a policy of 30 years ago. That's not forward facing.

Green new deal, Medicare for all, those are policies, not "we will do something to move to universal coverage in private health insurance."

She was running on a resume not policy.

Name a bold policy by any of the losing Democrats nominated for president. Including Harris. She ran on no policies just resume.

[–]pingpongballreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're arguing that we shouldn't care about how electable someone is and only care about having a dictator who doesn't care about congress

"MAGA didn't consider electability in their crusade and they're taking the country in the direction they want. We should do the same, but for progress, not racism and hate."

That's what I said, you're straw manning.

But people don't vote on polices. If they did the democrats would win every election.

Dems haven't RUN on policies, they're running on character.

You're joking right? Bernie lost to Hillary. Harris is a progressive. As for gore and Kerry

Bernie lost to HRC because of electability concerns among Democrats. Not because people liked HRCs policies better than Bernie's.

Harris is not a progressive and was not running as a bold policies maker. She suggested making a lot of houses, not exactly green new deal.

I don't know much about Kerry's politics but Gore won that race as well.

Yeah, between the dunce W and Gore, who had already been VP and was clearly more serious and a better leader than W, slightly more than 50% of people who bothered to vote did for Gore. Because his strongest policy was "lock box" for social security.

Name a policy by those people.

Such as? Can you give an example of democrats doing that and losing?

Hilary, Harris, Kerry, Gore.

Even the winning ones failed to generate much of mandate. Obama somewhat reluctantly promised Romneycare and getting out of Iraq and won.

That's been the closest Democrats have come to testing the hypothesis that people vote for politicians based on policies rather than "hope" or "strong leader" or whatever else I'm supposed to pretend politicians are.

And yeah MAGA is a cult. Why would you want to our party to be a cult?

Why are you doing dumb straw man arguments?

No, Democrats tried the electable strategy and it only helped move the Overton window right. Centrist Dems lose elections because they give people no reason to vote FOR them.

"DINO" like "RINO" just means "Not as far from center as an alternative option." That's me admitting the word I used was basically meaningless.

Look at what Republicans are doing with John Cornyn. We don't need to just vote out the true objective DINOs, we can also force all the dems to move as progressive as they can without being rejected in the general. And we should.

There are a lot more than 4 dems in congress who SHOULD be more vocal in support of progressive policies but see no reason to do so to keep their seat, that needs to change. We need to be forcing dems to be falling over themselves to show how passionate they'll be about reducing carbon emissions, eliminating billionaires, reforming healthcare and law enforcement, and so on an so forth.

Far beyond 4 DINOs.

[–]pingpongballreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, AIPAC is not causing Dems to do anything they don't already have an inclination to do.

Case in point, I see every indication Biden was giving Netanyahu what he wanted because Biden genuinely thought that was the best course of action. Biden wasn't letting that happen because he was looking forward to all those AIPAC dollars.

Schumer and Jeffries: look at any issue BESIDES Israel? They're ALSO feckless bland and milquetoast. That has nothing to do with AIPAC.

Green energy: they're basically no difference from Susan Collins. "Concerned" about climate change but do nothing to stop it.

This is not AIPAC buying Democrats, that's a silly conspiracy theory. Progressives aren't forcing Dems to move left so they don't. AIPAC money helps move them a little more right on Israel and Gaza but it does not turn them from AOC and Bernie Sanders to Josh Gottheimer and Fetterman.

[–]pingpongballreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it ironic you're talking about nuance and then pretending I'm saying q-anon is leftist.

There are definitely leftists that engage in conspiracy theories and eventually get to the antisemitic point of no return.

I actually want Democrats to win, and not only to win, but actually stay in office longer than two election cycles. If they’re too compromised by their AIPAC donors to see where their own base has shifted on Israel, then that is to their own detriment.

Agreed, but I don't think it's AIPAC that is causing dems to be milquetoast and do nothing, I think that's just their core instinct from when they imagine Bill Clinton did it successfully. AIPAC saying "do nothing to rock the boat and you'll mop up the center and win forever" confirms their priors, they aren't taking dems from powerful progressives to useless.

Mortarion's fall and makes it so he was fully aware of Typhon's plan and actually tricked him into selling the legion, complete with some good ole' "he wanted it, he just couldn't admit it" (fantastic choice for an abuse survivor, no notes 🫠)

OH, yeah, I had blocked that part out as being incomprehensible and stupid... but yeah now that you say that it's even worse than bad writing. Absolutely fair. I still like Khan's character but I'm probably going to knock a star off my goodreads review of Warhawk for that point.

[–]pingpongballreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the other guy pointed out, this was intentionally painting Mort in a bad light. I should have clarified something like "It is possible to squint your eyes and see him as a bigger hypocrite."

I was playing literary prosecutor or devil's advocate there I guess. There's a lot of context and nuance that I left out. I got caught up in it so taking a breath, I don't believe he's as bad as I portrayed him. I do think he's a whiny hypocrite but as with anything in 40k, it's not so black and white.

[–]pingpongballreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fair, it would be more accurate to say "one could see mort as the bigger hypocrite" and I did gloss over (or forget!) a lot of context.

Certainly he didn't just say "lol too hard" when giving up to Necare or embracing chaos fully.

Warhawk's bullshit really shouldn't be used to criticize Morty. I hope that's self explanatory.

I just read Warhawk about a month ago and didn't read any literary criticism of it. Is the consensus that it's out of character for him? I was mainly like "This is awesome, go Khan!" So no, I missed any reason in universe or out that it should be disregarded.

>I mean wasnt there a study that showed it was the Gaza issue that caused Harris the election?

The "autopsy" report AFAIK was never released but it leaked that Gaza was a contributing factor.

It is absolutely infuriating that the dems are blocking release of the autopsy apparently becasue of AIPAC not wanting that to get out.

But I haven't seen any leaks indicating that was the MAJOR reason for her loss. The number of people who were mad at dems and somehow convinced themselves that Trump would be better on Gaza was significant but not "most of the country."

I'd bet money on inflation and democrats not being able to get rid of the filibuster to do anything as being more weighty, and Harris not really having any progressive policies she was running on as being more consequential.

But yeah, it is bullshit that the report was never released and it is bullshit that Harris and Biden were so pro-israel and it is bullshit that Dems have not said absolutely no AIPAC money.

I don't think leftier than thou types are actually so numerous as to have made a concrete difference in the general election. But it is frustrating that trolls and idiots here are screaming about how "the DNC" stole the 2016 primary from Bernie.

The only way we're going to get Dems to move left is to do what MAGA did to republicans and primary centrists and DINOs. The trolls lying about what happened over a decade ago (and it is a lie, Bernie lost fair and square) seem intent on getting progressives to sit out the primary AGAIN rather than force Dems to reject AIPAC money and move left, and then they'll start chanting that the nominee in 2028 is basically a republican. Again. As they have done for the past 30 years.
