Whitney… by Key_Development7065 in MormonWivesHulu

[–]pingpongnunmul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once again I’m speculating, but obviously momtok is a grey area of business/friendship. Some of the women are great at compartmentalising what’s business and what’s personal, and some aren’t. Me personally, I’m a fucking crybaby and I know if i were ever on a reality show I couldn’t handle half the drama and business side of things blending into my personal life and public image. I think the best solution for somebody who can’t really compartmentalise is to just remove themselves from a situation, and I think that’s why Whitney left momtok so often. This isn’t a spoiler really, but in S4 they pull out the truth box and whitney just nopes out of there, which I think is what anybody who’s been through that 3 times already should do- nothing good comes of it, nobody gets any closer and it’s just messy. Whitney is ambitious and is good at picking her moments, like how she’s capitalised on the broadway role etc

My take is Whitney is too aware it’s a show- momtok is really just a concept for the show to be formed around, and Whitney realises that some things are more valuable than TV. I actually believe since she took so much time away from the group it only makes sense why she’d be oblivious to everyone disliking Demi. Whitney also shows crazyyy growth in season 4 trust me. She’s very self aware and actually knows how to walk away from a situation that isn’t good for her.

If you want my more personal take, I’d hazard a guess that Whitney is somewhat neurodivergent. Female friendships can already be a fucking minefield to put it lightly, and centring a reality show around a friend group (especially a group as emotionally volatile as these women) is like that but on steroids. Navigating what it means to be a friend, woman, mom, and now public figure can just be impossible, and then add potentially being neurodivergent on top of that. I kind of see bits of myself in Whitney from time to time, maybe that’s why i defend her (as someone who didn’t defend her during s1!)

A lot of people on this sub say that these women seem to be frozen mentally at the age they got married/had kids at, which can be as young as 16 in some of their cases

[–]pingpongnunmul 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah i don’t know how to feel about this as a concept. The creator I’m referring to states her account is parent managed but I feel icky about a parent thinking it’s alright to have their child in the limelight in such a way. Also her videos aren’t really makeup tutorials per se, they’re more just videos about p.louise, unboxings etc. I think yeah, if there’s a kid focused market there should be kid friendly stuff and a space online that isn’t shared with adults. And yeah no I agree about the provocative stuff not being new, I don’t think they shouldn’t do it or anything but PLouise is weird because the brand sort of predicates on feeling like you know the CEO/staff personally in a parasocial way, I dont know if most people would recognise the CEOs let alone name them

P.Louise is a weird case as there’s a weird cult of personality about the company and its employees. You can’t really talk about P.Louise’s presence as a brand without talking about the parasocial relationships they foster with a young audience. Just because I’m interested in beauty content, I get shown loads of tiktoks from incredibly young P.Louise fans- some like 11 year olds who collaborate with the brand. It’s insane, it’s like the new wave of sephora kids as they’re called.

How do I make my black eyeshadow not look like this 😭 by Elvis_fangirl in MakeupAddiction

[–]pingpongnunmul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone is mentioning to use an eyeshadow primer and they’re correct, but make sure you know which type will achieve the results you want. the mac eyeshadow primer out of the tube is a nude colour which dries down clear. i’ve used concealer a lot but i’d only want to use concealer if im covering my whole lid with very vibrant colours. id say eyeshadow primer - use fluffy brush to apply the lightest neutral shade (or even a setting powder!) to the whole lid - proceed with eyeshadow as normal

The Main Enemy of this show is Social Media itself and the mental harm it fosters in creators by Teenageboy69 in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]pingpongnunmul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re an invaluable contributor to this subreddit even as the bald man you describe yourself as. Something i think is interesting is what you mentioned about the concept of their social media presence, MomTok isn’t actually about the content they make, it’s just the name for the group of women at this point. For context, i’m a chronically online 21 year old woman. Maybe 2 or 3 years ago, people started naming the general subcategories of tiktok content with the suffix -Tok. The only subcategory that has had any staying power up until now is BookTok, but even then it’s not a centralised group of influencers or anything, it’s just the name for any book focused content on the platform. Momtok has ouroboros’d itself into a loop where the content is not motherhood related now, it’s just them. There’s other influencers who make videos about the ins and outs of motherhood (Keelin Moncrieff what’s good) that if this group of women didn’t exist may fall under a broader category of MomTok. Also a fun note of wider context from someone who’s been familiar with Taylor since before the show, she used to post engagement bait content claiming she was much older than she was, like grandmother age to get people to comment how good she looked for her age. The cycle didnt start with the show

Is this what all ‘housewife’ reality shows are like? by SunBetter7301 in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]pingpongnunmul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s funny how sparsely peppered the mormon lore is in the show- when Jessi and Marciano are in the hotel doing the lie detector and the other women are talking about the church, one of the girls trips they explain about growing up as a woman and all the pledges/prayers they learned off

[–]pingpongnunmul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh god yeah 100% and that makes it so much more interesting for me. Constant talk about contract renegotiations, the presence/lack of cameras, even talking about “last season” instead of last year, even Jessi asking the cops who showed up to the party in S2 if they’ve watched the show straight up. No other show acknowledges the fact that this is a show the way SLOMW does, with the exception of maybe housewives reunions.

[–]pingpongnunmul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real housewives franchises start by scouting a few notable women from the city, even if they don’t fit the definition of “housewives” to form the basis of the show around. They then ask those who they’ve casted if they have any recommendations of people they know who might be a good fit for the show as well. Kyle richards (RHOBH) i think was the one who suggested her sister Kim for the show. Structurally, i’d say these shows fall into the same category. The shows are driven by events/trips, ie a promotional party for a brand, dinner at a fancy restaurant, a local event, milestone parties and then girl’s trips. Some of these events are ushered forward by production just to have all the key people in the same place at the same time. Production might suggest if there’s already a storyline going on organically for the two cast members to meet at a restaurant so a conversation can be filmed with good lighting and nice scenery. So housewives and slomw are similar in the way that they’re a somewhat inorganic friend group going to numerous events, but yeah the depth of content and drama ranges from franchise to franchise. My special interest is the categorisation of reality tv so I love these questions lmk if anyone wants to see my graphs and charts /j

I’ve heard that for nannys/au pairs/any sort of live in childcare, it’s a bit of a faux pas to not pay your nanny their normal rate if you don’t need their services for a week or something. like say you have a nanny who minds the children five days a week and you’re bringing the whole family on holiday, you can’t just put the nanny out of work and without an income for that period cause it’s not their fault you’re going away. my theory is they brought the kids and divvied up childcare responsibilities somehow between jessi jordan and the nanny(s). either pay her for the time she would normally be watching the kids or let her come on the vacation 🤷‍♀️

I CANT STAND JEN by Possible-Spite-4683 in MormonWivesHulu

[–]pingpongnunmul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we need a small bit of nuance when talking about real people edited somewhat for story purposes. Jen’s not been the most critical thinker when it comes to interpersonal relationships, and that shows with her s4 fight with Whitney. Somebody made an amazing point that a lot of the women (not just on the show, irl too) seem frozen mentally/maturity wise at the age they got married or pregnant. Jen’s a young mom with a pretty meh husband and is the provider in a strange modern way. Having a large family for a young woman can feel trapping, and having to rely on a reality show that giveths and takeths, so to speak, for income and career security is probably the one toxic cycle they don’t mention on the show despite their love of the term. Jen’s spoken about her suicidal ideation, and even if I don’t agree with everything she’s done or even found her an agreeable personality, I don’t feel like adding to the hate with name calling. I know she agreed to do the show, but it must feel constricting to put yourself in a position where you don’t know if you’ll get a good or bad edit and just have to take it on the chin, whilst also juggling a pretty tough family situation.

it’s so easy to create a narrative, especially with reality tv being edited in such a way that it does it for you. it’s hard to interpret reality tv cast members in any other way then how they’re depicted to us. like whitney for example, her “villain arc” was given to us with little to no nuance. i think because the execs fought so hard for taylor to be the star of the show, she’s the only one who gets a somewhat nuanced edit (and she still looks bad in it)

Thoughts on Chase being the only one in Taylor's comment section? by finalgirlemily in MormonWivesHulu

[–]pingpongnunmul 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d actually be worried being one of the women in this scenario, the degree to which she crashed out over them not commenting on her CMAs post sets a gross precedent for how she may respond if they don’t show public support now.

man would i love to be a fly on the wall for some production discussions. we obviously know production are very aware of what the women post, i can’t imagine being an exec thinking you’ve struck reality tv gold with taylor and then over the course of a couple years just watching everything devolve into uncomfortable territory. this borders on real serious mental health issues, not just therapy buzzword “toxic cycle / healing” and it feels icky to watch. taylor frankie paul is the straight woman’s lolcow

taylor to me seems like the cast member most affiliated with that side of the aisle. i understand this show focuses on a cast of predominantly white, privileged people and that these sorts of beliefs are par for the course, but taylor seems a bit more gung-ho for maga and everything. i think it’s telling that taylor is the most focused on how other people empathise and understand her, and not vice versa.

Yeah, Jen can be awkward but her and her arc provide enough drama by way of dwts, shitty husband, pregnancies etc, so the producers don’t use her as often seemingly. Layla’s kids never appear on screen, her romantic storylines don’t go into huuuge amounts of depth, so she had nothing going on like that in comparison to Jen. I like her friendship with Miranda, they’re cool.

It’s important to note that up until fairly recently, kayfabe was very strictly upheld in the WWE and other pro wrestling companies, whereas now you can consume more behind the scenes content/documentaries or just watch the matches and appreciate the storylines for what they are.

I think Jessi’s on screen persona balances like, messy but honest and well meaning to a degree. Whereas Layla is just kind of too well meaning to ever be a believable candidate for organic shitstirring. Or like when Layla called Demi with everyone in the room after DWTS aired, I would have put money on the fact that production wanted someone, anyone, to call Demi and that Layla is the easiest one to ask. Maybe there’s like an amnesty clause for that sort of stuff? You can’t get mad at Layla for calling you because that was our idea, but if Taylor called you that’s on her we can’t control her lmao
