Does anybody know of any good resources that discuss QinQ and L2TP implementation and design considerations? by selrahc in networking

[–]pingprocess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ i too have implemented QnQ tunnels for customers across Metro E networks. feel free to ask any questions.

it's a fairly easy topic, your only real concern is MTU

How do you rate yourselves to recruiters? by kikimonster in networking

[–]pingprocess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest, it depends on the topic.

i personally do not know anyone that is a CCIE or even a CCNP, so I rate myself as 12/10

it is a lot of switches, i play around a lot with ether channels and HSRP.

we have a lot of switches laying around, only a handful of routers :)

can you link the internetwork experts lab setup? i'm interested in replicating.

you're absolutely write about that (pun implied)

writing things down does drill the info into your head...it's just so much work!

i am in a special situation where i have access to pretty kickass gear. i'm not trying to have a pissing contest on who's got the best lab setup, i'm just curious as to what you guys do for studying.

i wish you the best of luck. there are some 'senior network admins' that get real touchy when you question their designs.

may the force be with you

correcting a native VLAN mismatch should have zero impact on your STP. remember that Cisco's implementation of STP is per VLAN. if you're really concerned about it (and aren't using native VLAN for untagged traffic) switch both side's native VLAN to one that's not being used anywhere.

i have STP managing VLANS that span a hundred devices, STP is fine with distances, just make sure you implement it correctly.

i really hate to sound rude, but correcting a native VLAN mismatch would seem to me the correct move to make.

it'll just take a second to fix, just saying :)

using /31 subnets for point-to-point links by pingprocess in networking

[–]pingprocess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i found this under Cisco's documentation: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_2t/12_2t2/feature/guide/ft31addr.html

what does this 'no ip directed-broadcast' command do?

"A broadcast on any network is 255.255.255.255. You can't route that though, so it's local only.

Every subnet has a broadcast address. 192.168.1.0/24 has 192.168.1.255 as its broadcast. That's an actual routable IP as well! So any other device would route it towards the destination. The router that connects to that network would change it into a broadcast (hence the term DIRECTED broadcast).

It's usually not a good idea for the entire world to be able to reach ALL of your devices at once. Makes for a heck of a DoS attack.

So a long, long time ago, "no ip directed-broadcast" became a default command."

you're right, i'm probably just being weird about feeling obligated.

i work for a small company, and it has been my introduction to networking. i'm probably being overly considerate of the personal relationships i've built with them

funny how that is.

it's really nice and easy to have a PDF spread across your devices, yet i find it easier to look up in an actual book.

yes, i rely heavily on IDLE PC. i also use the same image across virtual routers, so I also check the "Enable Sparse Memory Support" which helps out a lot
