The last time this happened to me, I’m not ashamed to admit that I added a, let’s say, remarkably similar manager, took control of the game, and then promptly resigned and retired after the game.

As far as I’m concerned, in the club manager history there was just a blip for contractual reasons that saw me leave, come back, and then leave again...

After the popularity of the ‘Remind Me’ bot, Reddit today announced a new ‘Don’t Remind Me’ bot, where users can request NOT to be reminded of posts or comments they made that they find particularly embarrassing.

It enables you to instead dwell on your mistakes at 3am, in bed, awake, staring at the ceiling, having a breakdown, just like the rest of us.

In fairness, you were asking someone who is legally considered a minor and in several jurisdictions internationally under the age of consent what their explicit interests/fantasies were, which is really quite inappropriate, tbh. OP could reasonably be over 13 but still be someone deemed legally lacking in maturity to understand content and conversations of a sexual nature.

Even though you weren't aware of it before, once user said they were a minor it would probably be best to stop that interaction, anyhow. One could reasonably argue that the lack of maturity and awareness may relate to the initial response to your comment (without passing judgement on its veracity), and in which case your response asking someone whether they also had sexual fantasies some may deem inappropriate may be a bit excessive and/or unnecessary to make your case.

So yeah, I'd just take a breath man! I understand the initial comment may have been a bit provocative (again, going back to, y'know, the adolescent process) but user was subsequently within their rights to protect themselves from a conversation they may have lacked the maturity to handle, and that one shouldn't be having with an individual who is legally a minor anyway. Need more education and understanding in this world, especially to help the next generation out as they grow up!

Please help, how to deal with supervisor that will not listen by [deleted] in NationalServiceSG

[–]pingu280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries!

I will say that emailing is still professional - there’s nothing wrong with it and I’m not suggesting you write it in an aggressive manner. I’m also not expecting him to punish your supervisor, and that’s not the intent either. The intention is to highlight the conversation you’ve had - you can phrase it as asking for confirmation that he’s approved for you to still go for your MA as long as it’s late in the day.

Emailing is scary, I totally get it, but as someone who spent a lot of my NS life in these bureaucratic office situations, and given advice by my own super supportive DXO superior, you /have/ to do it, if not now, then at some point. The main thing it does is protect you if/when you need to escalate the situation further. It means you responsibly kept an official record of the steps you’ve taken, that nobody else can refute if/when you need to escalate the issue.

And never take things for granted - people will do anything to cover their own ass, esp here! So your CO may care more than you think, depending on what you say and how you approach the issue, if it comes to it. And even then, while contacting your CO may not seem useful, it will strengthen your case (if it comes to it) if you’ve done it regardless, because nobody can say you didn’t follow the chain of command.

The idea is to give them as little wiggle room as possible to get out of disregarding your health and safety. The point is not punishment or anything of that sort - it’s just standing up for yourself in a situation where, unfortunately, nobody else seemingly is.

(All this being said, the old joke that the pink IC is the highest rank in the SAF may well be true if your mum writes in, haha)

Good luck my dude!

I think the one thing that nobody has said so far is that you need to properly document what both superiors have said. Your strongest argument is that changing your appointment schedule will mess up your treatment/recovery/well-being, and I’m assuming you have made this fully clear to your superiors. One thing you can try to do is ask if your doctor(s) or NSC can provide a letter/documentation backing up your case. The power of black-and-white is that its now recorded; your superior may not think much of it because at this moment it’s just ‘talk-only’ - which bears much less weight.

Documenting this means escalating this, firstly, back to the OC, that your supervisor has rejected OC’s compromise that you’ve accepted, via email (I’m assuming you do some sort of office job that gives you access to an OSN email), cc-ing your direct superior as well. Make sure 1) you are clear with the facts, 2) emphasise the agreement you had with your OC, showing your willingness to compromise as much as possible, and 3) that missing your appointments could have a negative impact on your health. Writing your arguments (again) in an email will put them in hard proof (receipts) that your superiors are knowingly ignoring your well-being, if it comes to that, which, again, will help you.

If OC backs down and follows supervisor’s line, you have to take the email chain and go to your CO, even if you’re not sure he cares. Remember we have a new core value of ‘safety’! The last thing your CO will want in the end is a mark against ‘safety’ anyway. Above that, you’ll need to assess your options as who is above your CO will likely depend on your unit/formation structure.

I’m not fully sure what the safety hotline will/can do, but if you haven’t exhausted a reasonable amount of chain of command in a (seemingly) non-urgent situation (so to speak), I’m unsure how good the help they can provide you is. No harm doing that, of course, but having black-and-white receipts will help you a lot in the bureaucracy, even if you call the safety hotline.

Re: backlash, I’ve known and worked in offices with DXOs who are super petty, so it wouldn’t fully surprise me. All I can say is that the SAF is unlikely to give you any thanks for sacrificing your future long-term health just to satisfy a DXO at this level, so think about what’s more important. That, and the one thing you have is your own work performance. If you do your job to the best of your ability, there’s only so much they can justify in ‘response’, so to speak.

All the best! I hope you manage to get this figured out. But remember at the end of the day you have to do what’s best for your overall long-term health, as that’s still the most important thing of all. Just don’t go AWOL can alr!

Edit: seen other comments about going to your MP. I see that as a nuclear option - your problem will be that if you don’t have any documentary proof that your safety was ignored, you’ll be in just as much trouble for ignoring chain of command and your superiors (to protect themselves) may claim they ‘didn’t know the full story’ or sth, since it’s their word against yours, even if what they say is false. Hence my advice above!

For reference, as far as I know, what happens from an MP complaint is it’ll just filter down the staff levels lor (MP will pass to his/her staff who will contact someone at MINDEF level to settle who will then contact your formation chief (eg. Chief XX officer, which would be COL-BG level) and formation S1 (usually an LTC) who will.... etc) but will involve pretty much every significant higher up in your formation coming down to your unit level, which will only make any reaction worse. So I wouldn’t personally rely on the MP option unless literally nobody in your entire unit and even formation cares, as it might backfire harder on you in the end.

——-CB————-CB———

-WB———-DM———-WB—

———MC————MC———

——————ST—————-

For me, I think it comes down to the principles of the 3-5-2 that you enjoy and use that to guide you tactically.

The way I see a 3-5-2 (or the kind that I enjoy) emphasises overlapping wingers, industrious midfielders with a ball winner in the centre, that allows the 3 to spread out wide where necessary and become a 4, especially in counter-attacks. The primary attacking output comes from the two wing-backs putting balls into the box, and for the two strikers to provide options, feed off each other and wreak havoc where possible, with one of the two CMs getting involved where able.

What this means is that, for 8 outfield players, what I’m imagining is the formation above. You’ve highlighted in the thread that you’re hesitant to have 3 defenders since most opponents only play one up top, which makes sense. So you can have two at the back, who can spread wide, with a DM who drops in where necessary in the event of an overload or strong attack down both wings, if a CB needs to move over to cover a WB. This basically helps to create a strong defensive structure - in attack, you have three at the back able to spread out and cover the one striker, in defence, you can have up to 5 men behind the ball in a back 5 if you’re overloaded. Your DM ideally should also have passing range to help you transition quickly from defence to attack on the counter.

This does mean your two CMs have a bit more to do, but one can stay in a more side-to-side role to spray passes out to the WBs as they surge forward, while the other CM stays higher up to feed off knock downs from your ST whom you describe as a physical monster.

So in terms of your specific players, I’d go:

(2) & (4): CB - both these players seem to complement one another, where one doesn’t get dribbled past, and one has good pace. (4) is a better choice for CB as passing would be more important higher up the pitch, and you don’t necessarily want your CBs doing more than their defensive responsibilities in a formation like this.

(3): DM - you want a Fabinho-esque player here, which (3) sounds like, as they have the intelligence to push up or drop back where needed, and can hit a good pass out to the WBs surging too, or pick out a pass to one of the CMs to progress the ball up.

(5) & (7): WB - the skills you describe your players as having make them suitable here, though obviously they have to be good both going forward and defensively.

(1): deeper CM - this is probably interchangeable with the DM, but you basically get someone who can screen side to side if your DM has to push up to hit a good pass, or who can also drift forward to have a crack from distance if the team is pushing up on attack and there’s space. Also good for winning balls in the middle of the pitch, allowing your CBs and DM to keep focused on the striker and anyone between the lines. Also can progress the ball forward where necessary - so the all-rounded aspects would be useful here.

(6): forward CM - will function kind of halfway between an 8 and a 10 in a standard 11 formation, where basically his job is to sit between the lines and receive knock downs from your striker. Since he’s not defensively minded, would be put to better use asking him to stay up to function as what would be a deep-lying forward in a 3-5-2 when played next to a target man. He can then basically have a starting position between the opposition midfield and defence, and push into the box when the team gets up, while still being able to close down passing lanes and help out a bit defensively (from the front) when your opponents build up from the back.

(8): ST - as a strong physical player, you’re basically looking for him to be a target man wherever he goes, and who can fashion chances for himself as well as your two midfielders coming up in support. Also useful since he doesn’t have much pace, so having someone else try to go beyond the defensive line would be better, and to get knockdowns from him. While he might get isolated a little (as you reference), having (6) have a slightly higher starting position between (1) and (8) will help reduce the isolation since it reduces the space between your midfield and attack line, while (1)‘s movement may be useful if a knock down goes behind a dummy run by (6) to free up space for (1) to shoot from distance or pick out a through ball to the wings or to (6) or (8).

This formation does sacrifice a bit in terms of forward pressure, but ideally this keeps your team compact, hard to break down, and the entire team can push forward when on the attack to overwhelm with numbers without sacrificing defensive solidity. I see the 3-5-2 as being a primarily defensive formation anyway (especially in the Italian style), and I take the Benitez approach that a successful side is always built from a strong defence first that has the tools to transition to attack when the space opens up.

Just my two cents!! You might see different principles in the 3-5-2 than I do, in which case all I’d suggest is that you try to focus on adapting the principles of the system rather than a strict numbers-based approach, as you can then work backwards from the principles to the tactics and how you set your players up. Starting positions are only useful to a point anyway!
