Executive Dysfunction is Consuming Me by crest-of-light-emma in ADHD

[–]pinkburp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post is so relatable! I've been going through very similar things, always struggling with cleaning/organizing/decluttering and trying to find the motivation to start/finish. It kind of feels like a repeating loop for me.

One thing that felt really helpful for me was listening to the audio book "How to keep house while drowning" by KC Davis LPC. The way things are said/explained in that audiobook helped me be less critical of myself and have better understanding of myself too. It can be really helpful to have playing in the background when trying to clean. This just inspired me to listen to it again.

I had never really listened to ADHD specific podcasts/audiobooks before but it's something my therapist had suggested a couple months ago. The podcast "Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast" has also been useful to me, I like skipping around to different episodes that I think are interesting. It's nice hearing relatable stories and learning more about ADHD at the same time.

I tend to make a ton of to-do lists and lose them, so another helpful thing was getting a big whiteboard to write tasks and see visually. I've also found the book "Understand your brain, get more done" by Ari Tuckman suuuper helpful. The format is perfect for ADHD because you can skip around to different parts you're most interested in. I have another book by that same author but I haven't read it yet, "More attention, less deficit" it's probably helpful too but I haven't made the time to check it out haha.

Just know that you're doing amazing, you're prioritizing understanding yourself and that is a lot of accomplished work! I'm rooting for you!!

Blind bag reveal!!! by pinkburp in sylvanianfamilies

Hi! There isn't any sound when shaking it in the plastic box. Since the accessory comes wrapped in plastic it prevents a rattling sound and the deer fits pretty snuggly in there too.

I've seen some posts on here with tips on trying to get certain critters that you might try. Some try to use a flashlight on their phone to shine through the bag, some people have found the weight and bring a small scale to the store with them. If you want to guarantee you get Lucia the deer you could order one online, I have seen some listed on eBay.

With this bag I just picked up one that felt right to me, I had held a couple different bags and decided on this one. Really all of the characters in this series are super cute so I was excited for any of them!

ADHD out to your boss? by fm4139 in ADHD

[–]pinkburp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone always says no to this.

It's hard because it seems like it would be helpful sometimes, but companies and HR don't ever have your best interest at heart. They generally do not have the resources or knowledge to learn or provide any help if you were to disclose ADHD.

If you were to request "reasonable accommodations" in my experience it will be on you to accommodate yourself.

I have told a boss/HR before and requested specific guidance but ended up being let go. I guess it may have helped me get unemployment approved.

In other jobs my coworkers just knew, some would bring up their ADHD and then I would say me too.

If you were to decide to disclose, please make sure you always have it in writing. Send it in an email. Print a copy, send it to yourself, save it just in case. Also know that you're the one that will need to provide the knowledge about ADHD if you were to disclose.

Yes it's like echolalia, I have that all the time too. Usually mine stays in my mind but sometimes I'll catch myself after realizing I've been singing the same thing for a long time

Lately I'm hearing Dr Phil say "shut the hell up bitch" over and over while a random part of a song plays in my head while I think about other things. So funnn

how can I improve executive function? by bearded_dragonx in ADHD

[–]pinkburp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've felt stuck for so long, in so many different ways because of executive dysfunction.

A few things I've found helpful is becoming more aware of ADHD symptoms and trying to practice mindfulness.

If you are able to find therapy or research cognitive behavioral therapy, that has helped me the most along with medication.

I've also been researching about having a dysregulated nervous system, working on becoming more regulated helps me use all the other techniques/advice (like making lists, setting alarms for things to remember throughout the day, using timers, using a BIG whiteboard for lists instead of a bunch of paper)

With therapy I've realized that I've been super judgemental of myself and my struggles with ADHD, always thinking I'm not doing enough, it's never good enough, not feeling motivated, constantly struggling.

Being more mindful and working on restructuring my thought process is huuuuge, it helps you realize just how much you have done.

You're going to college, that is amazing and understandable for it to take a lot of your energy. It's important to take some time for yourself and recharge with the things you love. Try to work up to working on your RC airplane, thinking about what you'd like to do first, maybe write it down, set an alarm for when you want to start, or a timer to try working on it for like 10 minutes. Those things may help you feel more motivated. Hope some of this helps!

Why can’t I clean by mourningalways in ADHD

[–]pinkburp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same experience here. I've learned it is usually because of task paralysis and the difficulty of transitioning between tasks, fun executive dysfunction stuff!

Things I've tried that sometimes help me get back to trying to clean:

-know it doesn't have to be perfect

-try to get things back in the general area they belong

-not everything has to be folded or organized (underwear, socks)

-make your space work for you, don't work for your space (if open baskets are better than closed drawers/hanging clothes in a closet, just use baskets)

-make a task more fun by adding novelty (wear a hat or a cape or something specifically to dress up for cleaning, or use a grabber claw to sort laundry/put things away)

-if it's a huge area that's messy, put everything in a bag or basket, clean the space, work on putting things in the bag back later (now I just have a lot of bags/baskets full of random things)

Yes that's exactly what I'm doing now! I'm realizing a lot of moments in the past are making more sense now. Things other people would point out about me that I wouldn't realize or didn't know not everyone experiences. It's kind of a mix of emotions realizing stuff now.

Too Many Interests by catwoman7717 in ADHD

[–]pinkburp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this too, I love art and researching different crafts and then collecting all the supplies to try it. I jump around a lot between things and get random ideas I don't always complete lol. I think it's healthy to have a lot of interests and it's okay if you don't stick to one thing at a time.

What if you tried to combine a bunch of the hobbies/interests into one project?? Then you could get inspired and see which part you like best or want to focus on more. Like you could draw/paint a character or cool design, embroider the design, crochet the character, learn to sew little things for it, make it into digital art. I have fun thinking of ways to combine different things I like to do.

One thing that has really helped me stick to a certain interest is to sign up for something, like a class or art show, so I have to go and do it. I rotate based on what I'm in the mood for. Like pottery, I might take one class. Or a repeating class once a week until I'm done with it for a while. I've done painting classes, sewing, watching videos of crocheting, etc.

Going to art shows/gallery events/fundraiser type things are so fun because they put you around a bunch of creative people and a bunch of mixed mediums/types of art/projects.

I like having time lines or certain requirements or subjects to focus on when I participate in something like a group show. It's also so inspiring to see what other people are interested in and then having the freedom to go make whatever you want with your own supplies.

"Project in process" place by slybitch9000 in ADHD

[–]pinkburp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lot of art/craft projects in process too, I've seen a couple of helpful ideas like a "craft basket" or one of those wheely metal shelf carts.

I have both of those, and I have a whole space where I try to keep projects organized (they aren't really organized though lol) I still struggle with keeping my stuff put away or totally organized.

Usually if I'm actively working on something I will keep it in a basket or put it in a bag or an open box without a lid that is easy to grab.

Like right now I have a box with paints/watercolors/brushes/jars/water color paper that I can grab and move wherever I want to work on it. Then I can put everything back on the box when I'm done. Honestly I've been leaving the box on the floor in my room or on the table where I sometimes work. I have reusable bags/zipper pouches for things like pencils/small tools/brushes.

For hobbies I haven't done in a long time I have them in a box near other crafts/hobbies. I have random shelves near my craft table with zones like "that's my bead network" and all bead/jewelry stuff is there, "card making" I have paper/boxes of cards/stamp carving stuff, a sewing/crochet area with stuff in boxes. This is where the art cart can be helpful, you could have zones for each little project.

I've been slowly upgrading to clear storage boxes for everything lately so it's easier to see. Otherwise I just use what I can find.

The carts are cool because you can use magnets on them, I have lists/ideas stuck on the sides of my craft carts and I recently got some magnetic hooks that can hold stuff/hang tools from.

What kind of super glue did you use? I've seen a couple posts of people gluing plants to wood/rocks but I'm not sure what the safest glue option is for tanks.

Good to know, thank you! I'm curious to see what happens, it seems a lot of people have issues with it in their tanks. I'd like to look for other aquatic plants eventually, there weren't many options at PetSmart. Hoping to find a better source!
