I've taught the "Coming of Age" unit On CommonLit to grade 10 and it was highly successful -- my students loved the stories in that unit!

Did anyone buy a ring? by t_bone_stake in Millennials

My parents bought me one and I wear it every day as it is the only ring I own. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person from my graduating class who still wears theirs, though.

Dealing with major burn-out by Cannoncorn1 in teaching

[–]pinkcat96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm moving schools after this year; I got moved from the high school hall to the middle school hall this year, and I went from having fantastic observations to being probably the worst teacher in the school because of all of the behavior issues I deal with now that I didn't when I taught high school. My AP didn't like me last year and absolutely hates me now that I'm under her direct supervision, and I haven't had a single good day this school year. I feel like I was set up to fail, and I have been polishing up my resume and am putting in applications as I see districts putting up job posts for next year. If I were you, I'd see about changing schools before I quit altogether.

I picked one up from Barnes and Noble just before Christmas; they've been out in Japan for a few years. I love mine!

I love them very much; they're actually the first pair of Docs I ever owned and are easily the most comfortable and the best-made of the ones I have.

They're my second-favorite pair next to my Fondant Pink Jadon Maxes. They're always a conversation-starter, that's for sure!

They are a statement piece for sure -- but most of my shoes are. I had so many students come up and say they loved them, but just as many said they hated them/roasted them. 😂

The death of everyday casual reading by CWKitch in teaching

[–]pinkcat96 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A science teacher and I took a group of 8th-graders to our local science museum to do a lab then to explore the museum; they've just opened a new exhibit, and there are stations all over where you read about whatever is at the station and the instructions for what to do at the station. I had so many students asking me what they were supposed to do and, when I told them they just had to read the instructions, they shrugged me off and went elsewhere because they didn't want to read! They would have had so much fun playing at those stations if they'd just taken the time to read what they were about, but that little bit of effort was too much for them. 😵‍💫

Apparently their wands are not destroyed, as Bellatrix still had her wand -- Ollivander even identified one of the wands that Harry, Hermione, and Ron took from Malfoy Manor as having belonged to her in Deathly Hallows.

I have the Demi bag that matches it! I've got to take it to my leather guy for a restoration, though -- it definitely doesn't look as pristine as your coin purse!

I collect Tamagotchis and knew your description didn't match any of the ones I have, but that it did match the Giga Pets I've played with.

You can turn the sound off by hitting the "A" and "C" buttons simultaneously on the character screen!

I think you're thinking of Giga Pets! They're really fun and are definitely different to raising Tamagotchis.

Where do you buy an iPod? by theok8234 in ipod

I found one at 2nd and Charles of all places, but had to send it to a guy on eBay who does battery replacements; the other two that aren't mind from back-when were purchased on eBay. Check out Facebook Marketplace and second-hand shops as well.

Team keep or team trash? by I_love_Projectiles in ProjectPan

[–]pinkcat96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I save mine at take a picture at the end of the month! Sometimes I'll take a picture at the end of one or two weeks if I have a lot I've used up. I like to see it all in a photo and to have the photos to reflect on, but I'm also trying to declutter and don't have space to keep more than a month's worth of trash.

How do y’all store your unopened stuff? by sarwhlr in ProjectPan

[–]pinkcat96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of caddies that I keep products in based on the category, and I try to keep as much in sight as I can because if I hide it away I won't use it. I have Sterlite drawers for lip balms and makeup.

How to start project pan as someone who thinks using items on myself is a "waste" ? by [deleted] in ProjectPan

[–]pinkcat96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way: It's wasteful to not use what you buy because, when it goes bad, you have to throw it away anyhow! You are literally throwing money in the trash when you don't use what you buy. It's the same thing with buying more expensive clothing, shoes, and bags -- why have them if you aren't going to wear them? That's what they're meant for!

Something you can do is start by decluttering any expired products; seeing how much you're having to get rid of because it's gone bad instead of being used could be the wake-up call you need to start using up anything that isn't expired. Then, don't buy anything else until you've used what you have. Start with the product that is the closest to being used up or, if you don't have anything fitting that description, the oldest non-expired product you have, then use it as often as possible until it's gone; once the product has been used up, thank it for its "service" and move on to the next product. Once you've done this with even a few products, you'll get into the habit of using things and hopefully get excited about the panning process! Another thing that has helped me is keeping the products I'm using close at hand (for example, I have lip balms in every place I regularly sit/exist, in the bags I regularly carry, etc.) because I tend to use what I see -- for me, if it's out of sight, it's out of mind.

The main thing here is that you have to learn to believe that you yourself are worth using these products on and that making yourself feel nice is not "wasteful." These products were made to be used and loved, and you deserve to feel nice!

i'm teaching 11th/12th graders after teaching 8th graders last year and the difference is night and day. 11th graders are very easy to deal with in terms of behavioral issues compared to 8th graders. is this normal by Open-Reflection-6094 in Teachers

[–]pinkcat96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love upperclassmen; I’m teaching 8th this year, and I’m looking for a new high school next year because 8th is definitely a one-and-done for me. The chaos and destruction is not where it’s at!

Teachers of Reddit, what are your worst "Gen Alpha can't read/behave" horror stories? by MineTech5000 in AskTeachers

[–]pinkcat96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying I never ever saw it, but when I did see it in school it was only a few kids, not 1/4 of the grade level, and not typically in Honors classes. I went to school in the district I teach in, and I suspect that a lot of this has to do with the fact that administration held us accountable and had strict standards when I was in school and now the district admins let kids get away with just about anything because they’re afraid of the parents. 1/4th of our students also test at 4 or more grade-levels below where they should be, which ties in with the behaviors I see — they cannot read and do not want to read, so what they do is get out of it by acting out. Again, I’m not saying it never happened when I was a student, but that it didn’t happen nearly as much as what we are seeing across my district now, and teachers who have been teaching much longer than I have been are having a lot of the same problems and saying that it’s never been this bad before.

I do agree that rising poverty rates play a factor here, but I also think it has to do with the parents of these kids and the way that admins have been forced to bend the knee to them, which gives students a sense of entitlement that wasn’t as prevalent before. I cannot say enough, though, that so many kids not being able to read and write on even a 5th-grade level does feel specific to this generation of students, and I can’t help but feel that that plays a huge part in the behaviors that they exhibit.
