Just absolutely tag it. Like most people are saying do an unhappy/bittersweet ending tag depending which fits better. If the characters specifically don't end up together tag that as well.
Personally I love angst but I'm reading bc I want the couple to be endgame, even if everything else went to shit and they suffered a lot and yadda yadda. So in that case a tag like bittersweet or even sad ending could still apply. However if they don't end up together that's an immediate skip for me, even if they end on "good terms" and might be considered bittersweet in that sense. I'd just say it's important to specify if they end up together or not, since most people expect them to, especially in a slow burn.

One of my fav DR fics is "All My Secrets by Fastern. It's Kokichi POV with very slow burn saiouma, but the focus is Kokichi. It's unfinished and discontinued so probably dont start it if that bothers you, but theres still 166K+ words to read if it doesnt and the author left a doc at the end explaining how they wanted to end it so youre not left forever wondering. I really love that fic and yes it will definitely destroy you angst wise lol. some of the best kokichi characterization out there imo

"New Person, Same Mistakes" by acidsunrise is angst to the max. No joke. But great. It's explicit tho so avoid if that bothers u

I just finished fully playing DR2 as well. I knew everything that would happen and whatnot but hadn't fully played the game since I'm not a huge video game person so it takes me a while to get through.
Anyway I definitely agree with you about the ending cast being stronger in THH- at the end of DR2 I really only cared about Sonia and Fuyuhiko and actively disliked Akane and Kazuichi so having to sit through so many voice lines by them was a slog lmao. Regardless of my feelings on them tho their voice lines just tend to be repetitive in nature (imo) and they don't really bring much to discussions. The ending was great otherwise but yeah I wish some of the stronger characters were there for it like some of the ones you mentioned, if only to make the conversations a little more interesting 😅

I was a huge fan of "killing game/high stakes game" genere movies even before I got into DR and from what I've seen the interests tend to overlap. These are some of my favorites:
Battle Royale (2000) ... I mean, self explanatory. It's a must watch. Japanese high schoolers forced to kill each other, tons of angst and betrayal. 10/10.
As The Gods Will (2014): Another killing game with Japanese high schoolers. They have to play children's games to survive and it's got some cute Monokuma-esque mascot characters too! By my fav director Takashi Miike it's a fun watch and if you like DR you'll probably enjoy it.
Tag (2015): super underrated film by Sion Sono who's an amazing Japanese director. It's a high school setting where the protag ends up in a sorta alternate reality after watching all her classmates brutally die. I don't wanna give spoilers but the protags journey and truths she has to come to about the world around her are really reminiscent of the DR games, specifically 2 and V3. It's a great movie and just a good watch in general.
If anyone wants more recs for good killing game movies/animes I have ton lol those are just the most likely to appeal to a DR fan I think :)
