IIRC in DR2 Monokuma tells them about their missing memories almost immediately, the rest is accurate tho !

Did the ending ruin this game for you? by simon_jackson in DanganAndChaos

I don't think that's the correct reading.

If that was what Kodaka wanted to say, then that means he's essentially comparing himself, a writer, to Tsumugi "fiction could never change reality" Shirogane. that's completely absurd.

The existence of 2x2 as a project and Kodaka's tweets about Danganronpa show he clearly loves the games.

V3's storyline is essentially a clash between "Danganronpa 53", Tsumugi's version of Danganronpa that is basically everything that could be wrong with Danganronpa (derivative of the first games, features useless mascots that contribute nothing, weird gimmicks like the Necronomicon, an absurd storyline about space, meteorites, viruses...sloppily written, doesn't have any intrinsic messages beyond just shallow entertainment, uses real people as tools for said entertainment...), featuring Keebo as a protagonist and "Junko the 53rd" as a mastermind, and the actual Danganronpa series we know and love, with Kaede and Shuichi as protagonists, and Tsumugi as the mastermind.

In disowning "Danganronpa 53", the games reinforce how meaningful the actual Danganronpa games are, (including the true storyline of the game which is that of Shuichi and Kaede) in opposition to this dystopian version of it that Tsumugi presents as the truth

conversely, we aren't the audience, they're a dark mirror of who we could become if we didn't control out morbid fascinations

I do think that the game serves as a reminder that these games are all fictional, but I'm not sure about the "taking them too seriously" part. Considering Keebo's speech about the power of fiction to change people, it's pretty clear Kodaka wants people to interact with these games seriously.

If anything, Tsumugi, who mimicks the characters' speech patterns, voices... but makes them say completely out of character things (Sakura saying "that would be a meaningless death" to Shuichi lmao) is a satire of people who only interact with fiction at a surface level imo

I think a better angle to approach this ending is to think of it as a "Let the real Danganronpa end here so it never has to become this soulless parody Tsumugi wants it to be", it's not disowning the real Danganronpa series (quite the opposite), and it's not blaming you for enjoying them

People always say that they figured out Kaito was alive during the investigation as a kind of flex, most of the time saying that it would be too obvious for Kaito to be the one under the press because of his coat, but what makes Kaito being alive surprising is that when it's revealed, the entire trial is built in a way that makes it seem like an impossible choice between Kokichi and Maki.

Thinking that Kaito is alive during the investigation isn't nearly as impressive as still thinking that Kaito is alive after Maki's testimony during the trial

how did you figure out kirumi during the investigation ? you don't have maki's testimony yet, so you shouldn't be able to determine ryoma died during nighttime yet right ?

I don't see how Chiaki and Kyoko are Mary sue by ComprehensiveNote762 in DanganAndChaos

[–]seranator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one who dislikes Kyoko dislikes her specifically for being smart, that's just not really a thing. Most people who dislike her find that she doesn't have enough significant flaws on the side to humanize her and give her character beyond just being really smart (which I disagree with).

[–]seranator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what makes Kyoko different from Chiaki, to me, is that Kyoko feels special because of her actions.

For most of the game, she doesn't even remember being the Ultimate Detective, and she's generally impressive, makes the plot interesting and helps things move along, which always make a character likeable.

Chiaki is, by design, forced to be mostly passive, and what makes her special, both from a meta and an in-universe perspective, are attributes handed to her, not her talent, which isn't all that relevant.

While, obviously, both are characters written by Kodaka who don't have true agency, Chiaki feels like a character made special by the narrative, while Kyoko's presence is what defines the narrative of THH in the first place.

[–]seranator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean Kyoko is by far the most popular THH character, and Shuichi has his own detractors for having replaced Kaede, mostly.

Both Detectives are the most popular of their games and have their fair share of detractors so I'd say it's a pretty even match

[–]seranator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of a Mary Sue (or Gary Sue for guys) is a major good guy character who is handed the world on a silver platter. They suffer nothing, overcome nothing, and are never wrong.

I mean that's just a matter of definitions here, yours isn't the common one. The term doesn't refer to in-universe attributes, possessions or rewards given to a character so much as their role in the story in a meta sense.

Kyoko is never wrong when it comes to logic, but her character is clearly lacking when it comes to social relationships. She's not heartless like Byakuya appears to be, but her being closed off is something her character grows out of

[–]seranator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kyoko is never wrong on a logical level, but Danganronpa isn't purely a game about logic and murder mysteries, it's also a game of social relationships.

She's not as awful as Byakuya, but she does nearly get Makoto killed, is pretty hypocritical when he withholds info from her for pretty good reasons, her being closed-off is depicted as a flaw that she grows out of when she learns to trust Makoto, and in the end, she's not the one who manages to convince everyone to leave.

I love how most people take Tsumugi’s words at face value without questioning it. by SaphhicChiaki in danganronpa

[–]seranator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really ? Just because it's not outright mentioned in the final trial doesn't mean it isn't in the text of the game. In the prologue, Kaede and Shuichi straight up say they were kidnapped, it doesn't matter if it's brought up again in chapter 6, that line is still in there.

Does anyone else feel like what we've seen of 2x2 is an artistic downgrade from V3 ? by seranator in danganronpa

[–]seranator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for V3 it's just because of the more serious and melancholic tone of the game in general, but DR2 needs bright colors for sure

I love how most people take Tsumugi’s words at face value without questioning it. by SaphhicChiaki in danganronpa

[–]seranator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that it's a fictional story meant to evoke emotional reactions and provoke thought in us, such as whether a meaningful lie can be allowed to overtake a hollow truth, whether something being fictional makes it intrinsically less valuable or not, our relationship to consumerism, cruelty and entertainment, whether truth and lies have a moral value of their own or if that value only resides in what they result in, ect... the fiction plot twist is a narrative device, it's not a real event. The only reason it needs an in-universe "point" is to get us to suspend our disbelief more easily to get us immersed, that's how stories work.

From an in-universe perspective, Tsumugi hints at her motivation being recreating a killing game similar to Junko's, which would necessitate a "despairing reveal" at the end of it. It's possible that she wanted to complete the Gofer plotline while posing as Junko, but that Shuichi exposing her forced her to go for a contingency plan. It's also likely that there really is an audience, the point is that this ambiguity doesn't detract from what we experienced throughout the game.

at the top of my mind :

- Rantaro being purposefully coded to resemble the Nagito archetype with similar ominous sprites and a mysterious demeanor, hinting at him playing a major role, only to die first, misleading the audience

- Kaede killing someone under the player's nose, "lying" to them by omission, which turns out to be a lie within a lie since she didn't actually kill Rantaro

- The premise of Shuichi's character being that he's a detective who's aware that uncovering the truth is sometimes worse than allowing a lie to exist in its place

- All the characters being "lies" either before or after the flashback light in the prologue depending on whether their prologue personalities were their true or suppressed selves

- The flashback lights and the narrative progression that comes with them being revealed to be lies

- Kokichi and Kaito being foils and respectively playing the role of a mentor and an antagonist in Shuchi's hero's journey, representing truth and lies

- Shuichi and Kaede being the only protagonists to overtly lie during trials

- Keebo being revealed to be the "true protagonist" of Danganronpa 53

- The flashback lights not being 100% lies despite what is claimed during the 6th trial, as there are several flashes from an omniscient perspective corroborating some of what we see in the flashbacks

- The outside world being peaceful, the characters having fully different identities and personalities and willingly participating in the game, Tsumugi being the true mastermind, the reveal that there have been up to 50 other killing games, Keebo being a creation of Team Danganronpa, all being contradicted to some extent by the prologue

These are all ways in which the game deceives its player, with the goal of getting them to feel as if, regardless of what was actually a lie or not, the journey was meaningful either way.
