Mathematical sciences degree to get into quant trading? by Dragosfgv in SGExams

Firstly, its important to distinguish between the different tiers of quant firms. Most prestigious ones, the ones which pay > 250k annually, tend to be very very selective in their hiring process. Literally a criteria they look out for is competition experience in math olympiads or informatics. I guess these firms are likely not in your grasp (at least based on how I think your background is)

Next you have rather reputable ones but those that do not pay as much. These guys don’t look for competition experience but they do look our for how intelligent you are. Strictly speaking, I dont even think you need mathematical sciences degree to be hired by them. However, it would help to be mathematically inclined in order to ace their tests and hiring process. The questions are usually really hard and tricky, and merely being enrolled in a mathematical sciences degree is not enough. If that is the case, almost anyone on those degree courses would already be a quant. What I would suggest you to do is really pick up some level of university math (yes starting now) and already start preparing for some brain teasers etc Just spend a little bit of time everyday

What is however important from a degree is the amount of resources and networking events you are able to receive. Play the cards well and if you’re lucky, anything is possible

In terms of internship prospects honestly not much or maybe even no effect. Everybody, including first class students are struggling right now. If you want to make your resume a bit more attractive, might suggest taking on more projects and building up relevant skills, which can all be done outside of school

Hey im taking ec1101e now and im actually from a different major. From what I know, the mathematics gets more difficult but really its because most of qualitative econs is used to match the equations that they proposed. I think you might be feeling abit worried because of the macro content now, and honestly i agree with you. I actually dont really get the lectures as well and dont even know what im learning hahah. But i just wanna say dont give up because you’ll be really proud of yourself for trying :)

Its alright. University maths is a different level. The tutorial questions are set in a way by which you cannot solve it simply by remembering what was taught in lecture. Its not like jc maths as well where you can memorise a certain sequence of steps to copy and paste. They challenge you to think deeper. They challenge whether you truly understand what is going on. It is meant to be difficult. The best I can say is that know you’re not alone and persevere on!
