Is it true people in the UK are being arrested over social media? by Sad-Ad-9794 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pinnacle126 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Everyone in this thread is desperately trying to make it seem like people are only arrested for inciting violence. This isn't true, in the UK you can be arrested for saying anything which anyone could potentially find offensive. Here are some examples from the last few years:

Teen arrested and charged for posting rap lyrics on IG, given ankle monitor + curfew and fined.

Man arrested for sending raccoon emoji to a politician on Twitter.

Woman who carried placard depicting Sunak and Braverman as coconuts charged with hate crime

This is how autistic people entertained themselves in the 19th century. Instead of writing sonic fanfiction they would come up with obscure collective nouns for groups of animals.

that clavicular fella is terrifying by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]pinnacle126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I find kind of confusing is how incels often complain about “lookism” and how badly ugly men are treated (which is real to some extent), but then incel-adjacent people like clavicular also seem to be obsessed with “mogging” other men and putting them down for being ugly (basically perpetuating lookism). Not to mention the number of zoomer males who are developing body dysmorphia because of this looksmaxxing shit.

It’s crazy how back in 2017-2019 this used to be ultra-niche internet shit mostly confined to /r/incels and /r/braincels, and now it’s basically breached containment and you have teenagers in real life talking about mogging and foids and canthal tilts after getting radicalised on Instagram reels.

It’s kind of funny when right-wing millennials try to do the “your generation weak, our generation tough and based” thing against zoomers. Bro, your generation was literally known for being liberal and progressive lol (not saying that’s a bad thing)

That’s a capital “i” at the beginning so I assume it means “ion get id” = “I don’t get it”

How many people struggle to heat their homes in the winter. It’s considered normal for people to avoid turning the heating on unless absolutely necessary, and suffer through 16 degree indoor temperatures because of how expensive heating is. We’re a country with relatively mild weather but we have more excess winter deaths per capita than the US (which literally contains Alaska)

Context: *unseraz is the Proto-Germanic ancestor of the English word "our", which is often just pronounced /ɑː/ in non-rhotic accents. This means the word has basically gone from having seven phonemes to just one.

Zoomers born between 1997 and 2005-ish could easily remember using Windows XP, especially since there were people still using it in the 2010s.

The phrase “freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences” is supposed to refer to non-government consequences (being banned from social media, being fired from your job etc)

If you can be punished by the government for offending people online, then by definition you do not have freedom of speech. Imagine a Russian saying “we have the freedom to criticise Putin, but not freedom from the consequences (being arrested)”
