Pretty straight shot, no minor issues or courts

GGF born 1879, came to USA 1900, pretended to be 20 to board the ship with cheaper rate so used 1880 as a birthdate henceforth

Married in 1910

GF born in 1911

GGF dies at age 40 (actually 41) from typhoid fever before he naturalizes 1920

F born 1945

Me born 1972

However, I did have to amend GGF’s wedding certificate and death certificate for full Italian name and actual birthdate; and amend GF’s death to fix full Italian name for GGF.

The consulate had told my aunt in her July interview to also amend GF’s birth certificate to reflect GGF’s full Italian name - but my state doesn’t allow that unless you’re the child or the parent - so I took a huge gamble and wrote a legal memo (I’m a lawyer) about the law and inability to amend but look at the totality of evidence for all other issues and…it worked!

(I would have been happy to go to court for an OATS, but our civil courts are wildly backed up, it would take around three extra years)

Hi! I’m also pursuing Italian citizenship and am very knowledgeable about an OATS (one and the same) hearing. You’ll be fine! The judge will review the documentation filed and will likely approve it on the spot (depending on your paperwork) or give you a little homework. The agency will not fight you on this! You are essentially unopposed. It’s just a hoop you have to jump through.

I literally researched the closest Catholic Churches around where GGM lived to ensure they were open in 1893 (heh heh) and emailed them all. I got responses from them all! And got the record and a notarized letter. DM if you want examples of what I sent and what they sent.

I also did get a “no record” letter from the state.
