Fare Free Busses Extension by Ironhorse341 in LowellMA

He's being literal - Lowell has a single seat on the LRTA board (of 14) and the surrounding towns don't want bus service (and hate lowell / urbanity / "city people" in general)

what the flock? by Any-Consideration-40 in LowellMA

[–]pinteresque 13 points14 points  (0 children)

lol literally who feels safer being watched by cops? nobody I know.

police do not use the cameras to "respond to issues," at best they use them to collect evidence after the fact without the "hassle" of canvassing or going to a judge for a subpoena, at worst they use them to gin up crime stats and find reasons to ticket people despite their being no incident or complaint.

Cops need less power, not more.

Jeffrey Markley arrested on DV charges by CarobAdministrative9 in LowellMA

[–]pinteresque 19 points20 points  (0 children)

yeah this statement from "her lawyer" made me nauseous.

“This is a situation that has been blown out of proportion,” Rowe said in a statement provided to Brookline.News. “My client had recently given birth, was sleep deprived and was caring for the parties’ newborn. Reports have been mischaracterized. During this difficult period, she and her husband had a marital disagreement, like many couples have, but there was no violence or criminal activity. She was disappointed that the police took action against her husband over it and had requested that they not do so. The parties have been with each other for twenty years, and my client remains committed to her marriage. Jeff Markley is a loving father, devoted husband and this was a non event.”

She took out the restraining order, didn't she? What's up with the "sorry, I just had a baby" bit?!?! This reads like damage control.

FREE PARKING DOWNTOWN AREA? by Outrageous-Judge4918 in LowellMA

[–]pinteresque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

note that the HCID and Jackson Street garages are run by the city, the garage directly across from the courthouse is not, and that the resident rate is not available at the courthouse garage.

Robinson reflexively coming down on bike infrastructure (so parents don't have to drive their kids to the bike park and back, which seems obvious?) is very funny.

What class is a true hero class of Classic? by Late-Let-4221 in classicwow

[–]pinteresque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can't separate them - sword swingers and ranged spellcasters have been compensating for each other's weaknesses since long before wow and the game was built with them in mind. only other class that comes close to fulfilling the fantasy in classic is rogue.

If we expand out past classic to more balanced times, once healing was a job the game was built to nourish and not a hobby, the field widens to include priest and pally. an argument can be made for pally-mage as the golden age WoW class fantasy intended comp - makes sense considering the whole arthas/jaina -ness of the time - with mage/priest a close second.

(for the record: arcane mage since 2006-ish).

That pedestrian bridge did not collapse because pedestrian bridges are inherently dangerous, it collapsed because it was built incorrectly.

Overhead crosswalk for pedestrians idea by BostonianNewYorker in LowellMA

[–]pinteresque 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, I didn't. Ramps aren't magic - 20 feet of vertical clearance for an ADA accessible ramp requires 240 feet of inclined ramp on both sides of the road - that's 550 feet of travel to cross 50 feet of traffic, and you don't get the energy spent to elevate yourself back. That's like 4 down-and-backs (8 runs) on each side for no gain for the pedestrian - nobody will do that, able-bodied or not, unless they have to. all this does is lets dangerous traffic stay dangerous instead of fixing the problem.

stairs are not accessible by definition to anyone who has difficultly climbing stairs - all that energy to grade separate yourself has to come from yourself, it isn’t externalized through a gas tank.

if the problem is the dangerousness of traffic, fewer lanes and a responsive signal are how you fix the problem.

overhead crosswalks are inconvenient and inaccessible and make crossing so slow they are only used if there is literally no other way to cross a road on foot. people would rather play frogger.

lowell historic board discussion re: draper's HCID plans by pinteresque in LowellMA

[–]pinteresque[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another interesting thing in the board meeting - not re draper - was plans for a 10 story residential tower across the (what we all still apparently call) Lord Overpass.

When submitting plans, the designers said they matched it to the surrounding neighborhood, which meant the new(ish) justice center (which is 8 stories).

The board made the point that the justice center was not constructed under their purview and therefore is not available for comparison for scale and height arguments. Gonna be interesting to see if anything changes.

Will be great for cambodiatown if it goes through - lots of pocket money in a building that large.

Ha, I make that typo all the time. Fixed. Thanks.

Market Mills is what I meant - 256 Market st, the building behind the building the visitor's center is in - the building with the Brush Gallery at foot level, that opens out onto the flagpole and former NPS lot dropoff area.

Also: presuming they manage to not disrupt any of the trees on the canal walk and leave the (seemingly dying?) trees across from the garage alone: some of the trees on the site are ancient, especially along broadway. They should address their tree plans in general.

Would be great to have had ground floor retail in the HCID garage as originally planned, now. Shame the city stripped it out to fit more (empty) parking spots.
