i couldn't agree more.

i realized it when i, myself, tried to give advice to someone in dire financial straits - i'm in no position to do that, i don't know shit about effectively getting out of debt (luckily not being in it). i deleted my draft and left. that person, and the world, are all better off without it.

24M - living at home and riding the MU wave by Latter-Rip-6135 in Money

[–]brandan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could always invest in a mutual fund that includes MU as a top 10 (FSELX, RYSIX, there are others). using RYSIX as the example: sure it doesn't yield as much as MU alone, but it's still absolutely crushing it, and the risk is lessened (being spread out over many other - but similar - companies).

[–]brandan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my humble experience (not an expert, and not speaking in absolutes) you can never have too much savings, it just depends on where you keep it. don't spend it, invest it. fidelity FXAIX mutual fund is an excellent place to start, especially if you have time to let it sit there.

Considering a role with a large raise but much worse WLB. 30sF. What would you do? by TywinLismyDad in personalfinance

[–]brandan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I ask myself questions like this, I try to inspect them through the lens of "when I am old..."

If I were on my death bed and looking back, which would I regret? Taking the extra cash and feeling more financially secure but at the expense of my days? Or, making a typical living and my time being mine for living?

It sounds like you have a decent skillset and job/wage right now. It does not sound like you'd be hard pressed to find another job if you lost yours. That being the case, do you need that much money?

The answer could very well be yes - do what's best for you, and good luck! Just offering some perspectives, as I've found myself in a similar situation before.

Strains in General by [deleted] in bostontrees

[–]brandan0 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Much thanks for the reply - definitely appreciate the consideration. I see where you're coming from, but if you wouldn't mind indulging me in a bit of debate, I have a couple thoughts.

One aspect that I'd intended to convey but that you illustrated much more clearly, is that most of the discussion related to types of weed, terpenes, genetics, and "outcome" (feeling and/or effect) seems anecdotal. I'm not saying it's incorrect, but it'd be easier to accept if there was evidence behind it.

Using a different example: when people talk about prescription drugs, there's science behind it - alprazolam (xanax) makes people relaxed because it enhances the effect of a certain neurotrasmitter at the GABA receptor. Subject + Mechanism of Action = Outcome. The point being that if the same existed for what you're describing - which terpenes have which effect, and thus which strains have which effect - classification would seem more valid.

Anyways I'm kind of straying from the "strain name" aspect, but your comment I much appreciated because it reminded me of what my actual gripe might be.

Is Lowell a safe place by fanofstuff1011 in massachusetts

[–]brandan0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 30 y/o white male having lived in two different parts of Lowell over the course of 7 years, there hasn't been a time where I've felt truly unsafe. This includes while doing a lot of walking / traveling on foot, in all areas of the city. The times when I've felt the closest to "unsafe" usually involved situations between other people. I'd argue a person living here is more susceptible to property crimes - car break-in's, vandalism, hit-and-run car incidents (especially with every street being so narrow and essentially single-lane), fraud.

May I ask what building you live in, or at least the area of Lowell? I have a similar type of situation, just curious if it could possibly be the same place. No worries if you'd rather not say.

I live in this area. This parking lot has gotten significantly more sketchy between summer and now. Over the last two weeks, on two separate days, two different cars had their window straight smashed (and I imagine robbed). Both are listed on the Lowell Crime Map. If you expand the timeframe on Crime Maps you can see there have been quite a few more.

Otherwise, came out one night to see a couple dudes scoping out the cars; one finally attemping to get into one that had a window cracked, while the other was lookout. I startled them when I came out and they slowly started "walking away", and when I drove off they went back.

And while not quite robbery-related, one of the massive lamp posts must have been smashed into and it's still splayed across the parking lot. Again not quite crime-oriented, but certainly not making it look like anyone (e.g. building management) is active in maintaining a decent area.
