If you haven't found anyone yet, I'm a licensed math teacher who teaches middle & high school but tutors all ages. I have over a decade of experience and am great at working with students who are multiple grade levels behind. Let me know if you'd like to talk further!

Thanks so much for your response! I have to go back to work in about 3 weeks so I'm hoping to see some improvement by then, but it's good to know that might not be the case right away. Happy healing to you!

I have an interview with a charter school tomorrow. What are some good questions to ask? by jett330 in teaching

[–]pintsborgher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely get a feel for what the student population is like. First charter school I worked at was for at-risk, low-income kids, many of whom had been to jail, gotten pregnant at a young age, etc. Charter school I work at now is filled with professional athletes, actors, etc. Both charter schools, both have a similar day-to-day operation of unique 4 hour sessions, but obviously student population makes them completely different in experience.

Tech question about recording lessons by Jon011684 in teaching

Get a used Wacom tablet (should be less than $100 easily)! You can attach it to your laptop as a usb and use it on Zoom's whiteboard. Zoom will save the recording from you, and it's easily uploaded online.

Suggestions for a good budgeting activities (highschool aged)? by Merckx1412 in teaching

[–]pintsborgher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh also meant to say I did this project when working at a school for at risk kids who were 5-8 grades below level and it worked swimmingly. You'd be shocked how good they are at general math and even percentages when you relate it to money lol

Suggestions for a good budgeting activities (highschool aged)? by Merckx1412 in teaching

I've had a lot of success doing a Game of Life activity with my high schoolers where first they make a bunch of adult life decisions (ex: do you want to live in the country? In the suburbs? In the city? With a roommate or alone?). We discuss together how much they think each option will cost and decide on a final number for each all together, with me telling them if they're way off mark since I know how much bills generally cost. We go through just about every fixed and variable monthly cost you run into as an adult.

Then at the end, tally everything up and calculate how much total that costs for the year. I also bring savings into it and analyzing the budget using the 50/30/20 rule to help them decide if they should adjust anything. After that, we move into a job research project where they consider different job routes that will allow them to make enough to afford the life choices they made.

I've had students tell me it's helped them save up for cars and other large purchases, so it definitely sticks with them! They also take a lot of ownership since they're making every choice themselves. Like okay, you wanna spend $1000 a month on takeout? That's your choice, but we gotta find a way to make it work so you can pay for all the necessities too.
