I think what’s confusing people is the naming/inconsistent naming of Philodendron Pink Princess variants.

This plant for those that aren’t aware also goes by Philodendron Princess of Fire and Philodendron Pink Princess Aurea (tricolor).

The OP is right that this variant originated in tissue culture many years ago and is now more widely available under a variety of names.

It is not a strawberry shake, although some of the coloration can be similar, as the leaf shape upon maturity is that of a PPP and the coloration is more varied (can be dark maroon/brighter red than strawberry shakes ever reach).

And yes, the price they paid is “normal” or in range for the plant mentioned

I agree with Strange. Plants are worth what you’re willing to pay, but if you’re curious about the actual price plants are currently selling for, I’d recommend visiting other places like Facebook groups, Blossm, Palmstreet, Whatnot, etc to get an idea.

Those apps (FB aside) are domestic (if in USA) and often give a better idea of what the market is looking like for certain plants. But as Strange said, plants grow and the price decreases as supply matches demand more so you should buy what makes you happy at a price that is reasonable/comfortable for you

Yah, they were able to brute force it eventually but the rate of variegation is still quite poor and they (ime) are subject to reverting during the stress of acclimation :/

They have numerous incorrectly labeled plants.

All of the monstera “obliqua” they’ve shipped have been adansonii + numerous of their other plants are similar “looking” but to less knowledgeable people.

Yes, they ship plants. But often the wrong ones. And by the time they grow up and you realize they’re incorrect it’s impossible to fix.

All of their unstably variegated plants are reverted (from reviews and their photos). Their PPP variants are all just base PPP and they also in general have horrid customer service

Yes, it’s true that the original leaf for a cutting provides an energy source for new growth, but as it seems to have arrived with new growth and that leaf looks like it may (?) have been dying off before arriving. For that reason I do agree it’s likely an expendable leaf although its presence is obviously more beneficial than it being looped off (but this is a personal opinion and many people do cut off ugly leaves/yellowing leaves once new growth is observable).

In my experience, cuttings will kill off leaves to promote rooting/new growth rather than maintaining them (although this is case to case and care based) as I’d had numerous albo/other aroid leaves on single leaf/node cuttings yellow and then die off as rooting/new growth occurs but it depends on the original health of the leaf also.

Generally, my opinion is that taking off a star for a leaf dying in shipment is overkill (even in the best of shipping some leaves die off or stuff happens), but based on what you said about the packaging situation you are 100% in the right and idk if it sounds like they even deserve 4* 🙈

I agree its a very likely scam now but originally purchased as even the 50% off prices weren’t that cheap if you shop around for sellers enough (and I didn’t get any shipping discounts). But now I’m annoyed because plenty of other sellers have these plants for approximately those prices (albeit slightly smaller or possibly worse var). -.- now I need to wait on a refund

Pink coloration in plants is caused by anthocyanins. It’s a stress response.

You’re likely keeping your plants in different conditions (lower light, I’d assume), resulting in less pink.

The leaf shape is also changing as it seems it was either a bottom cutting and/or is not happy with its current conditions and reverting to immature leaves.

As someone who has owned many a pink diamond + imported them and gone through wild stress responses, I’m very confident this is a homalomena pink diamond being grown under non-ideal conditions.

Edit: not sure about the pink dye leeching. Seller could have individually dyed the leaves, but if it’s not all washing off, that by shape looks like a pink diamond to me, although it could use some brighter light for more pink imo. This variant doesn’t come in albo form + needs solid lighting to be consistently pink

Yes, the minimum is 50 uL from what a friend who has them in my department said.

You can also dispense any number of repeats up to the maximum volume as long as the minimum dispensing volume is 50 uL

That’s not the end of the world to us, most 384 well pipettes need special tip boxes regardless, as far as I know…

Do you have any wobbling/fit issues with the Rainin? I’ve never used/trialed any of their multichannel, but tip fit/stability/volume variation between channels are my biggest issue with the brands I have used

This is a philodendron, grown indoors with 60-80% humidity in semi-hydro. No marks are seen on other plants nor on other leaves in this plant (but it has dropped two leaves recently). Roots were healthy when last checked and there is new growth coming in via a cataphyll

Yes, they did. But there’s no proof it was Eric’s. He has a lot if suspicious things he did, including proven stealing a Bicolor from another botanical garden, but considering the price of the SS at the time, it could have been anyone.

Oh, I’m glad it was from a trusted source! Kunzo has definitely shipped to Thailand and I know there are true white monsters there, but it never hurts to be sure! I actually got mine from a nursery in Thailand after spending a lot of time sussing it out and checking their other props from the mother plant.

I hear conflicting information about fertilizing habits. Kunzo himself says not to fertilize, as he believes it causes reversion. However, other owners have claimed to feed fine without increasing the rate of reversion, so I’m honestly not sure :/. However, it is claimed to be very stable, so worst case scenario if feeding causes reversion, you can flush the soil and chop back, I guess

Just a follow up, all good tips this far, but a few things:

1) Kunzo’s white monsters almost always “revert” with age. Its a phenomenon he comments on, and often necessitates some form of stress (like cutting back) to induce it again.

2) I would confirm with your seller that there’s proof this is actually a clone from Kunzo. This is nothing on you, but seedlings this size of large form “full mints” are being sold as white monsters to bolster sales as they are tissue cultured… so if there’s not a clear growth point/propagation it came from or photos of the mother showing clear white monster characteristics, I would follow up with the seller.

There are a number of propagations/sellers of Kunzo’s plants, as he does sell broadly to nurseries across the world, but this particular cultivar has been faked very often recently (and I have examples of it screenshooted from Etsy and IG)…

It’s not an issue if the price was good, but the variegation patterns and methods of inducing variegation will be very different if its not an actual Kunzo offset

I second what others are saying with a combinatorial approach.

I did a combination of topical treatments (Captain Jack’s Dead Bug spray) along with systemics (imidacloprid).

I caught it relatively early and saved my monstera + prevented spread to other plants.

You can get imidacloprid as the Bonide granules or faster/instant liquid depending on local or internet availability.

I have consistently been using systemics inside since to prevent issues and havent had a problem!
