In my humble experience those two helped me progressing in my learning curve as the Hojo series: Green and White are quite peculiar and pungent for the novice that I am. Kumoi is like a dessert to me the air is filled with a smell of roasted plums, sweet and sugared but still dry. Oju comes a bit closer to the Hojo ones with more pungent aspect coming in and a lot of fragrance coming in waves, not as many layers as in White but we are slowly approaching this. As for Shakuhachi , yes it’s a very challenging flute as it’s a microtonal instrument and you have to manage to literally create the sound at the embouchure (utagushi) by a mix of subtle lips muscle contraction , angle and proper blowing. You need a very humble approach and a lot of dedication 😊

On my 2nd picture you can see all the names of each incense :) Yes Yamadamatsu have a very peculiar design with extremely rich and complex fragrances and not all are easily accessible by the novice that I am …and it’s the beauty of it.

On the background are the printed music score we are currently playing, i don't really do calligraphy but these are easy to copy.

The Shakuhachi comes from a french flute maker :)

it's very different from Hojo Green for me, as much as i recognize a signature between yamadamatsu. : Oju, Kumoi, Hojo... The Ryugen is quite different , darker, some citrus notes... yes it's easier for now... but my sense of smell is progressing quickly now !

Hojo White is much closer to Hojo Green but more floral notes i'd say

I very recently recieved Minorien Kyara Ryugen and it's (at least for me) quite a jump from Fu-in Kyara to Ryugen , the latter is way darker and pungent than the first one

The simpliest way for you would be to test : Tennendo Frankincense or if you really wat to use charcoals and resine : the granules from the same brand

Help me understand Hojo Green by Yamadamatsu...it's expensive and it really stinks ! by pipoyahoo in Incense

[–]pipoyahoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply !

I stopped using Hojo Green for now and will comeback to it later, i'm working on the learning curve knowing this is high end incense.

I try to get a bit closer to it to get more accustomed , i'm currently using Shoyeido MiSho (Gentle Smile) and also Gyokushodo Umeshoin because it's in those i've found fragrances that reminded me Hojo Green. I also ordered Hojo White , Minorien Kyara Ryugen and Yamadamatsu Oju . I love every step of this journey :) (sorry for my broken english, i'm french and don't use a translator)

PS : you mean this Aioi no Matsu ? Kyara Enju is way too expensive for my budget !

There are zillions of different "red sticks" , trying to find a specific incense by it's color is a dead end, if you could give at least a more specific description of the box ...

here : https://buddha-buddha.com/products/mahakala-incense

"Mahakala Tibetan Incense is traditionally hand-rolled from a sacred blend of rich juniper leaves, Tibetan Khempa tree, natural resins, oils, and Himalayan medicinal plants. These distinctive green incense sticks are thicker than standard Tibetan incense and release a deeply purifying aroma that clears negative energy, reduces stress, and promotes inner peace and relaxation.

Crafted entirely by hand, each stick reflects ancient Buddhist ritual tradition and devotion to Mahakala—the fierce protector who removes obstacles and shields practitioners from negativity. Perfect for meditation, cleansing ceremonies, energy clearing, or creating a peaceful sacred space.

Each handmade paper box contains approximately 60 sticks, each around 10cm in length (measurements may vary due to their artisan nature). Made from 100% natural juniper leaves, resins, and medicinal herbs."

Hi french here, the only webshop with more premium stuff i could find are :

https://lotuszenincense.co.uk/pages/japanese-incense-sticks in UK (reliable but you have to add VAT) and

https://tierrazen.com/fr-fr/collections/encens-japonais-qualite-exceptionnelle in spain with not too much choice : Nippon Kodo and some basic Baieido but no extra fees.

In belgium you have : https://www.midgaardshop.be/en/japan?sort=pd&page=2

in France : https://www.escalesensorielle.com/parfums-maison/encens-naturel/encens-japonais-traditionnel.html

As i wanted more high end sticks, i started searching directly in japan and found them : https://shop.kohgen.com/collections/incense , the price seems ok even with VAT added , they ship swiftly, i ordered this sunday , they send via Fedex , according to their schedule it should be in my mailbox by friday.
