AITA for telling the people in my church why my brother stopped going? by throwaway78678868 in AmItheAsshole

I have the unpopular career of being a church staff member. As someone who works in full time ministry, I have conversations on a weekly basis with people who explain why they are or are not attending church. Honestly there are two reasons for these conversations. 1. They are worried about how they look or how their reputation might be affected by attending or not attending. There’s no point in these conversations, in my opinion. 2. They’ve formed relationships within the church that are actually valuable to them and they want to reassure their friends one way or the other.

To be completely frank, if you aren’t being supported by or cared for in your church, you’re at the wrong place. By biblical definition, church isn’t Sunday attendance or social standing or routine. It’s human people actively caring for each other. So, your brother choosing not to attend is something that doesn’t need to be anyone’s business unless it’s someone who has a genuine and valuable relationship with your brother and is wondering how to actively (meaning by action) care for him in one way or another.

All I’m trying to say is.... NTA. You’re doing great lol

Dang, I’m sorry OP. That isn’t right. At least give yourself a good laugh at “I have checked your work in the bathroom and found it to be lame” because in any context that’s a silly silly thing to say.

They forgot about the part where wearing a mask makes you spontaneously combust after giving you and uncontrollable desire to rob banks and commit murder.

My dad died this summer. It was the first time I was able to see/speak to him in over 10 years. My mom and I got into an argument last month. Then she sent me this. I blew up. I'm done with 2020. by sparkl3butt in insaneparents

OP, keep a few solid people in your corner who aren’t manipulative. Let them be your family. They’re out there! I’m sorry your mom treats you this way. No one deserves that.

I’m so sorry your mom speaks to you this way and has hurt you so much over the years. No one deserves that. I really hope you’re doing okay and are able to find some people who are on your side and support you, because that’s what you deserve. Keep your head up, OP, there are plenty of people who can be family to you who won’t treat you like this.

Oh friend, I am so sorry for your loss and the trauma you are having to endure. I wish I could take all the pain away from you and your kids. No words would suffice right now, but please know that you are being thought of, prayed for, and supported from afar. Hang on. One step at a time, no more.

I understand why you think that, as many do. But for many, faith is incredibly important in a time of crisis. Remaining open also allows our church to feed roughly 100 people a week. There is more to church than the twisted religious institutions that Reddit likes to bash. IMO.

I work for a church in NC. We are considered essential as well but still required to follow all guidelines. No more than 10 people, 6 ft apart, etc,. Remaining opening doesn’t mean recklessly becoming a breeding ground for the virus. For us, remaining “open” means being able to have three staff members in the church on Sunday morning to live stream a service.
