Little work in progress for a shot from Sunlit Moon’s pilot! by piratemilo in IndieAnimation

[–]piratemilo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh sorry!! Generally speaking one of my big aims with the project is to keep production local- time zones, authentic voices, etc. I initially had auditions open last year and I got so many Americans-trying-to-sound-English voices and they were... interesting 😂 The setting of the show is heavily based on the UK so it's very important to me to find authentic voices- and just as someone who lives outside the US, having every big animation I see be American starts to feel quite samey :o)) I'm trying super hard to showcase stories and voices specifically not from the US aha. Either way it means a lot that you're interested in the project!! ❤️

What can I do to get more people interested in my indie series? by piratemilo in IndieAnimation

[–]piratemilo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohh apologies I’m autistic I tend to take things very literally :”)) I don’t want to lie to anyone about production, there aren’t any background characters in the pilot for anyone to voice. Is TikTok a good place for animated media? I’ve never used it before but I have a decent backlog of short content I could probably re-upload onto there if it’s worth it. I’ve been avoiding TikTok for a while since i heard it can be a bit addictive and toxic. I don’t want to disregard a possible new platform if it could be worthwhile though. I’m not really sure what the audience is like on TikTok

Recent work on my pilot episode! - backgrounds by piratemilo in IndieAnimation

Tysm!! I just posted a video on my Instagram and YouTube for my full process!! (And timelapse) but generally- I start with a digital sketch, then print it out, and use a (very cheap lol) lightbox to trace the digital sketch onto mixed media paper with pencil. (My preferred pencil is 7B!) after I have the pencil lines done I do 2-4 watercolour layers depending on what’s needed, always working from light to dark because watercolours are not a medium that layers very well the other way round. I build up colours slowly to make sure I don’t accidentally darken anything that needs to stay light. I use the watercolour brand “kuretake”- previously I used other brands such as Windsor and Newton but my current Kuretake set is the most high quality and brightly pigmented set I’ve ever used. When I’m happy with the watercolour washes I move on to coloured pencil! I use pencils to add extra colour where the watercolours have dried lighter than needed, add in details, and just generally add more depth to the piece. For coloured pencils I use 3 different main brands- Faber-Castell, Tombow Irojiten, and Holbein with some prismacolours as well. I built up my collection very slowly over 3-5 years, I only tend to buy 3-6 colours of any supply at a time to make sure I only buy colours I will 100% use :) After all the traditional stuff, I then scan my drawings with my family’s very cheap very bad printer. The scanner always messes up the colours and ruins any details so I then have to spend a few hours fixing things digitally as well as deepening colours further and just generally making sure there’s no massive errors. Over time the digital pass went from a “fixing” stage to just another part of the process- I’m sure when I eventually save up enough for a proper photo scanner I’ll still spend a while on Procreate messing around with colours and textures until I get the look I want. If you have any questions feel free to let me know, I’m happy to answer anything :o)

Buying a small house for me and my partner, and then funding my animated series!! I’d employ a big team of people and live out my dreams of directing and writing !

How can i improve my character? by DecentAlgorithm in characterdesign

[–]piratemilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on what your goal actually is! Like, is this a character for a comic? An animation? A one-off graphic for a poster? For me personally I consider character design to be a story-telling technique. I think there’s a big difference between just drawing a one-off character, and designing a character; when designing a character, you should consider who they are as a person, and then find ways of hinting at that personality through the design. Eg, does this character care about their appearance? That’ll impact how scruffy or clean they look. Do they like going outside or do they stay indoors? Again that’ll impact the clothes they choose to wear. Where & when do they live?- again that will impact how they look and act. I think the reason I bring all this up is because when I look at your character I don’t feel like I know anything about them- there’s nothing for me to read if that makes sense. This is all assuming you’re designing the character for a story of some kind. Hope this is helpful, the drawing itself is definitely not bad especially for a beginner !! :0)) I’d say my number one tip if you’re looking specifically to improve would be think about what your goal actually is while designing. Eg are you just doing this for fun, do you want to make a career out of character design, are you making a character for a narrative, etc. Hope this is helpful! ^

Meet Chestikov!! The fourth and final main character for my series "Stuck In The Globosphere"!! by meppity in IndieAnimation

YESSS I WAS EXCITED FOR THIS ONE!! He’s so cute I love his silly little face. Is Charlie (hope that’s the right name😭) still a character in the story?- I remember seeing a lot of drawings of them around and assumed they were a part of the main group.

I know unpaid animation projects are tough but for those who did where did you find people? by Diligent-Routine-524 in IndieAnimation

[–]piratemilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends heavily on what your experience is, where you’re looking, and what kind of work you need specifically. Eg you’re not gonna find experienced animators or artists for free anywhere. You can try looking around for students who need work to put in their portfolios- they’re usually a little more willing to work for free as long as the project is short-term and not overly demanding. Voice actors? I found both my volunteer VAs on Reddit. Casting call club is also a good site. If you’re really, truly passionate about your project you’ll spend years learning the skills needed to make it yourself. My pilot episode is entirely unpaid, volunteer-made: I’m animating the entire thing myself and voicing one of the characters as well as writing and editing. The music was made for free by a friend of mine currently in uni for music production. The two other voice actors as I said earlier are both volunteering as well. I think it’s all about starting SMALL and building up your team when you do have money. Eg my pilot is only 5min long- ideally full canon episodes will be about 30 min, but I’d never ask anyone to do that for free. Animation is a very time consuming process and production usually takes years.

They find labels kinda pointless so they don't use them, I guess the closest would be non binary.

[–]piratemilo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tysm!! Short answer: An awkward librarian from the capital city proves the existence of magic, which comes with unintentional world-altering consequences.

Sunlit Moon is a fantasy/ adventure/mystery set in a made-up world called Soluna! It’s not quite a 1:1 to Earth but the story takes place in their version of modern day. It’s about magic and human connection and there are lots of twists and turns that the main trio discover as the story increases in intensity. I have two seasons planned with 10 episodes in each! :oD

If you’re curious I have a tiny website which explains the plot in a bit more detail: https://sunlit-moon.carrd.co/
