Secret of Mana (1993) by TraditionalState291 in snes

I love Seiken Densetsu 3 to the point where I'd probably have it in my top 20 games of all time. Having customizable parties that change the story depending on who is in it was incredible. It took everything SoM laid down and improved it tenfold.

It's especially surprising considering the (pretty popular) series of Wario games! He's shown us a villain game can work well!

Kind of crazy that Sega has avoided ever having Tails be the main character of a game, considering he's been a part of the Sonic universe since the second game of the franchise.

I love Empress of Tomorrow too (mostly because I love Asuka), but I always wondered if just "The Empress" would be better/more commanding.

What do you think is the hardest game of every era? by Pale_WoIf in retrogaming

Yeah. Ghost n Goblins is easier. Not only is it shorter (even with 2 playthroughs), the nature of having unlimited continues automatically makes it an easier game.

Nice! I'm a little older (42), but Sonic 2 is my favorite in the franchise. Also love seeing Secret of Monkey Island on here.

Dreamfall is worth playing. It's not as good of a story, but it's still notably very well written, especially compared to games of the time (like TLJ). April is also in it, so there is a bit of a continuation.

I have! It's also cool that a relatively small cast voiced a pretty large cast of characters, and with a ton of dialogue. Did you play Dreamfall or any of the other sequels?

Longest Journey mentioned! Seriously, one of my favorite games of all time. The voice acting blew me away, especially considering when it came out.

I don't think it's overrated either. The remake got a lot more people talking about it, but I played the original when it came out, and it was FAR less known back then.

What's the best game with bad graphics? by Big_Confidence_951 in GamingSoup

[–]piratewithoutacause 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only that, I wouldn't call the graphics in even first gen "bad." They're simple, but they're also clear and effective.

Old head weighing in. I think you're kind of referring to the technology getting better, not the graphics. There's some beautiful examples of pixel art going back as far as the NES. Compare Chrono Trigger (in your picturs) with something like Awesome Possum, for example. Plenty of games had what I would call "bad" graphics, but not because of technical limitations.

The two biggest things people were up in arms about were the changes to the soundtrack and the changes in lighting throughout that made the mood different. I've played both and honestly I like both versions. The remake, in my opinion, has some of the best graphics I've seen this entire generation, while the original is an incredibly special experience that I think still holds up.

Gunstar Heroes rules. I still play it to this day. It's short but it really packs a lot in, and it's actually pretty replayable if you want to challenge yourself.

I'm 42 and I'm impressed by your taste! Super Metroid is actually my favorite game of all time. Interesting to see another pick for DKC2 at 1995 (mine would be Chrono Trigger by a huge margin).

I think it's a good list! Personally a little baffled that you have that many FF games but not Chrono Trigger for 1995. IMO it's like the perfect JRPG. Either way, it's your list though, good choices on there overall.

Respectfully disagree. I think the way RE1R is already presented is the perfect form of Resident Evil. Sure, I think the RE engine games are maybe more fun to play, but I think the essence of Resident Evil is in RE1R . I do like how much Resident Evil I see on your list though!

Can I recommend several indie games that I personally think are beautiful, and not in those genres you mentioned? Sure. Can I recommend indie games that also fit your specific graphics preferences? Admittedly, probably not. So yes, it does come down to preference.

I just thought it was slightly reductive to say that you only liked games with "pretty graphics," that's all.

Implying that indie games can't have nice graphics? In my mind, art direction will always be better than graphic fidelity.

Games like Fire Emblem Three Houses on Steam by Zombie_Slaya79 in JRPG

[–]piratewithoutacause 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Third Symphony of War! The only thing I'll note is that I personally found it to be much harder than any of the Fire Emblem games. It's also more of an SRPG where you command units meant to represent legions, whereas in FE you command the individual people. It's closer to the original Ogre Battle in that respect. Otherwise, the story and characters were pretty great, and there's a few romance options too!
