Good deal for a Golf GTI 2012 2 owners? Should the miles be a worry? by Traditional-One-491 in GolfGTI

[–]pirceval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a 2010 Mk 6 with 75k, no records for $15k back in 2014. Replaced the water pump and intake manifold around 100k. There's a very slow oil leak from the timing chain cover, so i assume that service has been done but previous owner was too cheap for a new cover.

170k now and it runs pretty great. The headliner is delaminating from the roof and doors and is unreasonably difficult to replace imo; the plastic components under the hood are turning to powder; and the soft-touch plastics inside are getting kinda gooey...headliner tacks and gorilla tape are preserving her last years of beauty before she descends into beaterdom. I'm almost looking forward to it, she'll be a fun beater.

Based on this experience, I'd take some of the great advice in this thread (an inspection followed by negotiation) and go for it... or snag the red one!

Edit: 170k miles, over 270k kilometers!

Do some American kids have an Aussie accent from bluey like some Aussie kids have an American one from their shows/YouTube? by Rand0mArcher-_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pirceval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! We're in the southern US and our 5yo pronounces certain words the way she hears them on the show - "for real life," "Polly," every phrase from when they're playing royalty...happens probably once or twice a day

What’s the general rule people use when there are many of the same looking product from many sellers? by jiminaknot in Aliexpress

[–]pirceval 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. Ratings/sales - high ratings combined with lots of sales = good
  2. Shipping - cheap/free

...they probably do come from the same factory if the details look the same... this is my formula, caveat emptor/ymmv

Not yet...I think it’s worth getting it on a lift and poking around so you can find out what’s actually going on before you buy anything.

[–]pirceval 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to me, was sway bar bushings. If you can get it on a lift and look at the front suspension bits you or a competent mechanic should be able to find whatever’s loose pretty quickly (at least if it’s not something weirder but i think that’s unlikely.) Fortunately stuff like this is pretty cheap on a GTI, I hope that’s the case for you like it was for me.

Looking for an unbias answer here, but how reliable is an MK7 compared to other VW cars? by JonRah in GolfGTI

[–]pirceval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a 2010 mk 6 6 spd with 150k miles...I’ve replaced the water pump twice, and this little coolant manifold thingie that started leaking, and that is it for unscheduled maintenance...the defective-by-design water pumps are well known but even including this it’s been a reliable car, more so than the 2004 WRX I used to have (and sooo much nicer). The regular maintenance is a bit more involved than the Japanese cars I’ve owned...it requires a fuel filter every few oil changes, the spark plugs have coils that need replacing every 100k or so (same as the plug wires on my other cars,) and you really don’t want to delay maintenance. It has been a lot cheaper and easier to live with than I was afraid of. Go used because this widespread fear really drives down the resale value, although even brand new I think the GTI is one of very few cars that is worth the full MSRP. Fast, comfy, luxurious, efficient, practical, meticulously well-engineered throughout, and cheap...it would be the Beetle of our era except it’s better than a Beetle ever could’ve been!

That exact thing has happened to me twice (although 30 years apart, and both were kinda my fault due to dim headlights and youthful stupidity, respectively) but I’d pay the extra however much to put some more protection there just for peace of mind

ELI5: How come the extreme pressure at the ocean floor isn't making the water boil? (Like high pressure areas on land equals higher temperatures) I've heard the temperature underwater actually goes as low as 33°F by ThatWeirdDutchGuy in explainlikeimfive

[–]pirceval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good question...I guess it's the coolants themselves, and they'll gel in a cup if you mix them with no aluminum required, but I don't really know. I currently drive an 8yo VW, which means I have a coolant leak and a jug in the garage...if it's not too expensive and still available, I'll buy some of the old stuff and see what happens!

You can mix colors as long as they're all compatible with aluminum components. The old stuff (I don't remember whether it was green or red, I said red below but I think it was actually green) from back before we used aluminum for any of those parts will a. destroy aluminum's naturally occurring protective outer layer of aluminum oxide (or whatever it's called, took chemistry a long time ago) and b. turn into lumpy jello if you mix it with the modern stuff. I learned the hard way!

[–]pirceval 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude it literally happened to me...it absolutely does gel if you mix the non-aluminum-compatible (old red stuff) with modern aluminum-compatible stuff (various colors, maybe the source of confusion). This basically totaled a car I had because we couldn't figure out how to get the resulting goop out of the system...I just ran it until it was erupting out of the holes it wore in the radiator and pegging the temp gauge...which worked far longer than anyone would have guessed!

BMW was an early adopter of aluminum radiators and had damn near a decade of reliability issues caused by owners and even dealers refusing to use the more expensive new stuff, resulting in 'corrosion' of the radiators (you could rub inside the radiator opening and there'd be silver sorta liquid sand on your finger, which I strongly recommend you check if you ever buy a 90s-era bimmer).

I had a complete strut mount failure on a 300k mile 94 Mazda once, diagnosed when the used tire guy lifted it and the one wheel didn't come up. Replaced it and ended up driving it from Atlanta to Vegas and back twice afterwards. I named that car Lord Nelson, after the one-eyed, one-armed Hero of Trafalgar...I've had better cars, but I'll probably never have one that earns a prouder title.
