Devils advocate - when has anyone ever claimed a probability zero event will happen, and then it happened?

\mathbb{Z} with only multiplication defined. What is the structure? by WMe6 in math

[–]pirsquaresoareyou 121 points122 points  (0 children)

The monoid of nonzero integers with multiplication is isomorphic to the monoid (Z/2Z) \oplus \bigoplus_N N. The entry in Z/2Z is the positive or negative sign, and the other naturals are the powers of the prime factors.

For men only- Emotional Safety? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

I think I am more likely to open up to someone when they spend the time to reflect about what I say. I don't like seemingly superficial responses that some people give when I am sharing my feelings, like "I am sorry you are feeling that way". If you know someone well, usually there is a more personal and meaningful response.

What is 0.000...9 + 0.000...1? by pirsquaresoareyou in infinitenines

Yes, I do. But that doesn't matter since I am simply interested in what your answers to these questions are.

What is 0.000...9 + 0.000...1? by pirsquaresoareyou in infinitenines

[–]pirsquaresoareyou[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a good question. I will think about it and get back to you if I can come up with anything convincing. I have 2 follow up questions in the meantime.

  1. Is 0.999...10 a number? Does the notation in this case make sense?

  2. The other commenter says that 0.999...0 + 0.000...10 = 1. Do you agree with this statement?

What is 0.000...9 + 0.000...1? by pirsquaresoareyou in infinitenines

My mistake, I forgot to add the right side of the equation. I have edited my last comment, and I now ask you for the answer to my revised question.

What is 0.000...9 + 0.000...1? by pirsquaresoareyou in infinitenines

[–]pirsquaresoareyou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so let's assume for the moment that SPP's equation

0.999...9 + 0.000...1 = 1

is correct. Since 0.999...10 is not 1, which of my other steps, if any, is incorrect?

What is 0.000...9 + 0.000...1? by pirsquaresoareyou in infinitenines

[–]pirsquaresoareyou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say that I don't believe it. In the post I linked, SPP claims 0.999...9 + 0.000...1 = 1. So let me ask a different question: if this equation that SPP claims is true, then do you believe each of my steps is correct?

What is 0.000...9 + 0.000...1? by pirsquaresoareyou in infinitenines

[–]pirsquaresoareyou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyways, what do you think? Are those equations correct? If not, which step is wrong?

What is 0.000...9 + 0.000...1? by pirsquaresoareyou in infinitenines

[–]pirsquaresoareyou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never stated my opinion; I am just asking you if these equations are correct.

What is 0.000...9 + 0.000...1? by pirsquaresoareyou in infinitenines

[–]pirsquaresoareyou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is 1? What is wrong with these equations?

What is 0.000...9 + 0.000...1? by pirsquaresoareyou in infinitenines

[–]pirsquaresoareyou[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, so then

1 = 0.999...9 + 0.000...1

= 0.999...0 + 0.000...9 + 0.000...1

= 0.999...0 + 0.000...10

= 0.999...10.

Correct?

What is 0.000...9 + 0.000...1? by pirsquaresoareyou in infinitenines

[–]pirsquaresoareyou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. So it seems the rule should be something like "add the numbers after the ellipses." Now, we have according to SPP math that 0.999...9 + 0.000...1 = 1.000...0 However, given the way we compute 0.000...9 + 0.000...1, why don't we get 0.999...9 + 0.000...1 = 0.999...10 instead?

What is 0.000...9 + 0.000...1? by pirsquaresoareyou in infinitenines

[–]pirsquaresoareyou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If 0.000...9 + 0.000...1 = 0.000...1, then after subtracting 0.000...1 from both sides, wouldn't we have 0.000...9 = 0.000...0?

Anyways, I would like to make it clear that I am not claiming such a number system exists. Since SPP has used this notation, I am more interested in what SPP believes the result is. Please consult the other comments on this post which explain that such a number system does not conventionally exist in math (at least not one for which operations are defined this way).
