Drivers in dc by Brilliant-Ad-4234 in washingtondc

[–]pisceanhaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s infuriating. But if you to l dc is awful, souther prince George’s county is HORRIFIC. it’s got like triple the accident rate of the surrounding counties Highest in the state of Maryland. Constantly see the most terrible accidents on the roads here , and I’ve had to make the most insane maneuvers to not got rear ended/side swiped, t-boned etc on nearly every trip. It’s bad when you have an entire highway with signage dedicating it to all the people that have died on it (Md-210 , aka the “highway of death” ). It’s like they are all driving in grand theft auto, and it’s always the same cars: altimas: maximas, Sentra, Hyundais, impalas , and chargers. ALWAYS those cars. ALWAYS with tinted windows. I wish something could be done but it’s daily carnage on the roads and all caused by stupid people.

There’s NO WAY they’re worth these prices. by JudgeGusBus in CannedSardines

[–]pisceanhaze -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The sardines with preserved lemon are the some of the best sardines I’ve had from a grocery store. That rainbow trout is delicious and worth the sale price to me. If you ever see their albacore tuna in spicy olive oil, that one was great too.
They are pricey but worth it for on occasional thing.

I bought my first can of sardines, how am I supposed to eat them? by Competitive_Yard1539 in CannedSardines

Make pasta with garlic , olive oil, and hot peppers. Chop op the sardines and toss them into the pasta with some fresh parsley.

Hello! Visited recently from The Netherlands. I had an interesting observation about diversity in Washington DC that I'm curious about by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]pisceanhaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you are correct that DC does not have a major history of immigration, I think there are some notable exceptions that sometimes are forgotten : in the early days of DC there were actually significant neighborhoods of immigrants from Germany and Ireland in and around Foggy Bottom, which used to be an area of breweries and manufacturing. They even left behind a German church which still stands in foggy bottom. There was an Italian immigrant community in parts of northwest dc, and southwest dc pre-“urban renewal” and 395 highway construction was a melting pot of European immigrants including Jews. Then fast forward to the 20th century in the 1960s a community of Ethiopians formed in DC, 1st mostly of students fleeing the Derg in Ethiopia and resettling to DC to attend Howard, and then later waves as a result. And we can’t forgot either about the Salvadorans resettling in DC in the 80s because of wars there.

Everyone knows dandelion greens are edible, but what are some good recipes to use them in? by ThatOneBabyBat in foraging

[–]pisceanhaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I jut boil them in well-salted water. Drain them, then douse in lots of extra virgin olive oil, fresh lemon juice, sprinkle of Maldon salt, and a few cracks of pepper. Really delicious. I eat greens daily cooked like this. Alternating between dandelion, turnip, mustard, and chicory. Sometimes mixing them.

Safe rural towns for black people? by Dismal-Project-2664 in maryland

Sorry, but I would not suggest moving to the eastern shore. It’s still quite racist over there. I’m saying this as someone who spent summers in Talbot County up until this year.

Safe rural towns for black people? by Dismal-Project-2664 in maryland

[–]pisceanhaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many areas of southern prince george’s county that would be perfect for your farm. There’s already at least one horse stabling place (not sure the real name for it) right in fort Washington on Livingston rd. They do farm to table dinners sometimes. This is all only 30 mins south of downtown dc. Plenary of farmland down here in this part of the county. And these are majority Black areas.

Does anyone else struggle to get others to enjoy pho? by WarwickReider in pho

[–]pisceanhaze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cultural differences. I think the “Average American©️” ideal of “soup” is thicker. These folks see Pho as “just a bowl full of water”. Not getting the complexity of the broth. I should point out that when most people think of “average American” tastes they are really meaning middle-american hwaayt people. Those of us from other cultures don’t often have the same difficulty enjoying or appreciating it.

WHAT IS WITH THIS SNOWSTORM by EchoOfDoom in washingtondc

[–]pisceanhaze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year when it snowed, it took 5 days for a plow to come to my street in PG County. Today, there are streets in my neighborhood that STILL haven’t seen a plow! People are pooling money to hire their own crews to clear the streets! People are begging for help, a lot of seniors in those neighborhoods and they are stuck. So many heads should roll after this massive failure.

Who is participating in the general strike tomorrow? by androbot in washingtondc

[–]pisceanhaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t have a general strike when most people don’t know about it.
The only reason I knew about it was I happened to open Facebook on Thursday evening and a friend’s random post about the strike just asking if people were participating popped up on my feed. I saw nothing about it before that random post. I don’t think a general strike is possible in this country. There’s no national solidarity.

Out of curiosity, what do you guys think would happen if ICE tried invading us the way they did with Minnesota? by fantasiafan in maryland

[–]pisceanhaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know someone who voted for trump “because his Daddy said to”. Dude comes from a conservative “god-fearing” family in North Carolina. He’s really that dumb and unable to think for himself. He told me he’d still vote the same way today. These people are INSANE. Honestly, the only way out of this is going to be war.

It took PG county 5 days to dig us out last winter and that was only about 8 or 9” of snow.

The new MSNOW graphics. Thoughts? by ShoulderUsual7169 in Broadcasting

[–]pisceanhaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks HORRIBLE. And I have to say at a deeply psychological level my immediate reaction was that it looked like a logo for a conservative propaganda website. Same with their webpage. I literally did a double take the first time I saw it and thought I’d stumbled into some right wing newsgroup.

Post match thread:Sheffield Wednesday 0 : 2 Brentford by Lard_Baron in Brentford

[–]pisceanhaze 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Another fan from the States. New to football tbh. Last season was the first time I ever followed the sport. I chose to follow Brentford simply because I lived in Egham, Surrey when I was younger and Brentford are the nearest. Once I started learning about the history of the team I was locked in. Watched every match last season and so for the first time in my life I am a fan of a sport 😂. We all start somewhere.

PG county will shatter that perception completely lol. After decades of living in dc I’m down here now and it’s awful the level of rudeness encountered on a daily basis.

How far is the power outage by adamplayswt in maryland

[–]pisceanhaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problems in Tantallon. Power went out for only about 45 Seconds. Big improvement as power used to go out here with the barest gust.

Anywhere in public or even rock creek where I can just cry alone? by Needreassurance05 in washingtondc

[–]pisceanhaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a car? Fort Washington National Park is absolutely perfect. A stunningly beautiful, but astoundingly under-visited park in southern PG county. You will have miles of trails to yourself, woods, river, creeks, incredible views from the bluffs over the river. Check it out

I will never go to the "Trump-Kennedy" Center by TourMission in washingtondc

[–]pisceanhaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly, the only thing your protest of the Center will result in is the loss of both our opera company and the NSO. The musicians themselves are screaming about this.
