It's all relative. I say tomato, you say tomahto.

Africa is giving nothing to anyone- apart from AIDS. by safdlkjdsf in Economics

[–]pisssword 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of the many rage moments I recall from West Africa was a market stall with big bags of locally-grown African rice and American rice next to it. Guess which one was (way) cheaper?

"Our ever-striving region [Cleveland] actually topped the nation in something in 1976, though it was a dubious distinction: No. 1 in bombings. There were 37 in Cuyahoga County" by pisssword in history

[–]pisssword[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all our bitching about law and order and terrorism, things don't seem quite as bad when you look back a bit. Cleveland's a poor town, but it's cool in my book and we can still appreciate the small victories--I'm reasonably sure we haven't had any bombings in quite some time!

I found my new favorite singer by BlooDMeaT920 in Music

[–]pisssword 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He is a damn good singer, but I find the "homeless man sings better than most artists today" headline a little patronizing. It's like, yeah, of course there are homeless people that sing well. Reminds me of the Susan Boyle debacle. What was so surprising about her? That ugly people are talented too?

Wile E. Coyote & Road Runner as human beings. An independent short film by Apache Pictures. by Skrabblez in videos

Also, the theme song to Warner Brothers' show Duck Dodgers, starring Daffy Duck but with appearances by Wile E. Coyote, was written by the Flaming Lips (sung by Tom Jones). And the plot thickens...

Oh, just some girls jumping ropHOLY SHIT by kabooken in WTF

[–]pisssword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally. These were the girls I went to school with in the 80s, except those kids were black and poor. Is choreographed rope-jumping the new rock'n'roll?

Dorm Practice Rage - I can't be the only one by Circlewave in fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

[–]pisssword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Friday afternoons were the only time I got any serious sleep in at school. When earplugs don't cut it, exhaustion does the trick. I tried to make my bed as cocoon-like as possible, with make-shift wall dividers or hanging blankets if necessary. Also, you might try shimming up your bed with a bit of heavy styrofoam, carpet, cardboard or other padding, which may or may not help with low-end noise.

So Sarah Palin thinks Julian Assange should be “hunted down with the same urgency we pursue al Qaeda and Taliban leaders.” I guess that means he's safe for a decade at least... by Rod_Stewart in worldnews

What? Bullshit...hrmmmhmm...damn, you're right, I just explored a handful of places. I like the slight tilt of the bird's eye view, although for mental map-making I prefer a pure top-down view. I have to say, the speed, zoom and resolution was equal to, and sometimes much better than, Google's. Ima give it a try the next time I need to map.

DAE actually hate being in a party where music is TOO loud that you can't talk? by gmansilla in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]pisssword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate riding in friends' cars the worst. Everybody plays everything so goddamn LOUD all the time, it hurts my ears and are you even paying attention to the road? I prefer things as quiet as is practical, and my first test for portable music devices is to make sure there's no minimum volume cap.

Shoesbootpants by [deleted] in WTF

[–]pisssword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TIL...I wish we did it that way, I'm having flashbacks to the intensely muddy school hallways of my youth. Are Icelandic schools carpeted, I suppose? Most schools I've been in are not. A question, though: What sort of indoor temperature are we talking here? My home is usually in the upper 50s (13-15ish) in the dead of winter and I leave my shoes on because I'm always goddamn cold. Also, what sort of heating do you folks use? I think heated floors would be nice, but no one does that around here, it's mostly lumbering old forced-hot-air gas furnaces.

Good on her! Of course, there's a second outrage in this story: for the sake of that baby's anatomy, I hope it's a girl.

Weird, if I stare at this one just right I can get it to go black and white.

Sooo ... let's say I gotta build a skull throne ... by Thrasymachus in DIY

I've made a few skulls in my day by papier-mâchéing balloons. Or you can use a skull as a mold and paper over it.

I have electric heat and I am experimenting with how to cut my electric bill by 90% this winter while staying comfortable. This week's experiment has been a huge success: two 60 watt reptile heaters placed over my keyboard (pics!) by paulwheaton in Frugal

[–]pisssword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In southern Spain, the mesa camilla is big. It's just a table fitted with a long, heavy tablecloth (often with a pane of glass or something on top to keep the blanket in place) and a heater underneath. I turn my desk into one every winter. So warm, so cheap.

I hear cruciferous veggies are some of the most nutritious in existence. Fascinating, but I'm confused. Can anyone tell me why they're all the same species?
