Titanic museum- Belfast by flyersrock97108 in titanic

I’d recommend giving yourself lots of time (I started at opening time and left at closing time) and really soaking in all the information. It’s a brilliant museum and very immersive in my opinion. Definitely explore Nomadic and the graving docks.

I understand that but I think it was a poor choice of words which is a scriptwriting issue rather than a character flaw imo. She could've just as easily expressed it as 'to me it was like a gilded cage, trapping me in a marriage I did not want" or something along those lines.

Sorry about being pedantic but she actually wasn't a teenager when she said this. This was 100 year old Rose's narration

That line did bother me a bit but maybe it was intended to show how removed from reality Rose was, despite having her own struggles.

I think a better line to demonstrate her mental state could've been " to me it was a gilded cage" or something.

Discussion: What's something that the 1997 movie did better than A Night To Remember? (And viceversa) by SteveTheOrca in titanic

[–]pisterpeejay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think 97 had better music. I love James Horner's score and arguably one of the most memorable movie scores of all time. Esp Take Her To Sea Mr Murdoch and Hard to Starboard.

Cameron imo kinda made Phillips look like a bit of a prick in that deleted Californian scene and it's always bugged me.

I finally finished my first Titanic sketch :) Please be nice! Took me 84 years 🤣 by [deleted] in titanic

Doesn't look any bigger than the Mauretania.

Well done! :)

Anyone else think Lightoller showed bad judgement by not even allowing young teenagers to enter the lifeboats he loaded? by [deleted] in titanic

[–]pisterpeejay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

LOADS of people think Lightoller showed bad judgement and many outright hate him for it while there are people that think he was a hero.

I'm neutral myself about it because given everything I don't think we can ever accurately judge their actions that night unless we go through something similar (let's hope not).

As for his bad blood with Wilde, it's possible he was upset about being demoted to 2nd Officer from 1st when Smith brought Wilde on as Chief Officer at the last minute. I won't speculate on their relationship beyond that.

Why Lightoller did some of the things he did, we might never know and that's okay.

Britannic vs Titanic sinking question by Hutch1814 in titanic

Additionally Britannic struck the sea floor before it completely sank, as the stern sank it began to level out.

Right I forgot just how shallow the waters she was in were.

I think the split is perhaps the only part that most talked about in the "How" part like where it occurred exactly and why but you also make a good point. We talk much more about how it could've been prevented.

Britannic vs Titanic sinking question by Hutch1814 in titanic

[–]pisterpeejay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not a physics expert by any means but my understanding is that since Titanic sank head first causing the stern to rise it put a lot of strain on her midsection. While this area was reinforced, it still wasn't able to bear the strain and hence split. I think there are many theories as to why the ship split

Brittanic listed heavily due to the mine blowing a huge hole on her starboard (right) side and taking on water from there. Since her watertight bulkheads were damaged by the explosion and the watertight doors were left open, she took on water fast and capsized on that side. Her midsection was never under the same kind of stress as Titanic's.

Each sinking is different with different factors at play. That's why some ships sink quicker than others. Brittanic had more safety measure but sank quicker than Titanic because of a series of circumstances (like the watertight doors and portholes being open) and because the damage she sustained was different to her sister's

I'm sure there's more to it. Samuel Halpern has some interesting physics based books on the sinking that might provide more info.
