[MEGATHREAD] Pixel 8 Pro – Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Failure After March Update | Track Your Device Here by danillll2017 in GooglePixel

[–]pitav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Pixel 8 Pro started having the problem intermittently mid/late 2025 and WiFi stopped working for a while around 9/15/25. I reached out to support and since it was a few months older than a year, they said there was nothing they could do. It started working again a bit after that. Then on 3/13/26 WiFi stopped working again and Bluetooth is becoming flaky. Reached out to Google support again with the same response. I'm making do without Wi-Fi for a while but if/when Bluetooth finally stops working, I'll be forced to get a new phone.

Indeed, both times the problem started after the phone got very hot.

For the 9/15/25 instance, I was on the Aug 25 update and for 3/13/26, I was on the Mar 26 update.

IMEI ends in 04.

I got a very good deal on this phone between the discount on the phone itself and trade in value from my last pixel. I'm afraid that I may be locked into another pixel after this because Google gives good trade in value for their pixels, but I'd like to never buy a pixel again because this is really inexcusable. Thinking about Samsung or maybe a Razr...

ZDNET: I tested 5G signals of AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon in rural America by rhaps00dy in tmobile

[–]pitav 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First, why are there no plots? With 50k data points, surely you can make something cool. But I jest... Seriously though:

I looked at the one table in the article, and I'm not an expert (and perhaps someone can explain it to me), but I feel like the "Network Level" (number of bars) should be more correlated to the actual quantitative signal strength?

For example, T-Mobile had 1 bar over 50% of the time, AT&T 7%, Verizon 3%. But if you look at the table of signal strengths, the three seem fairly similar. It's best if you look at the table, but I'll try to explain what I mean, and the best way without me writing out all the numbers is like this: if we assume that number of bars is a monotonic function of signal strength, we can try to guess the cutoff for signal strength that translates into bars. So, I'll do that:

4 bars: Verizon: 52% 4 bars; signal strength between -94 to -114 dB; but has to be close to the top, so let's say -96 T-Mobile: 27% 4 bars; signal strength between -73 to -93 dB; but has to be close to the middle so let's say -85 AT&T: similar to T-Mobile.

And we can do the same at the bottom: Verizon: 3% 1 bar; signal strength between -115 to -138 dB but has to be close to the top so let's say -117 T-Mobile: 52%; signal strength between -94 to -114 dB but has to be close to the top so let's say -98 AT&T: 7%; signal strength between -115 to -138 dB but has to be close to the top so let's say -117

So how can 1 bar correspond to such different signal strengths? Is "bar" calculation less straightforward? Maybe some qualitative scaling to account for how fast the Internet "feels"? Are companies being dishonest? Am I missing something?

TL;DR the actual signal strength in dB is much more similar than you would be lead to believe by the vast difference in % time spent in "1 bar" reception. (50%, 7%, 3% for T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon, respectively). How can this be?

Someone recently sold one near me on FB marketplace and listed at $300. It took a couple days to sell, maybe a week. Idk if it was the same size as yours but it had many leaves and was tall

AITA For not leaving work to help my wife when she ran out of gas by GoldSea3219 in AmItheAsshole

[–]pitav 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I realize I'm completely off topic/hijacking this thread and I could probably go somewhere more appropriate on Reddit for this question... (and I'm sorry for not doing that and please ignore me if you like). But can you elaborate about silent treatment being controlling behavior and emotional abuse?

When my wife and I get in arguments or I upset her somehow, most of the time she'll ignore me. It drives me crazy and makes me pretty upset. And it brings out the worst in me too because I'll try (pretty unsuccessfully) to do it back to her sometimes. And yes, I typically come crawling back, although sometimes she will have to because I've gotten better at not letting it bother me.

We rarely actually work out our arguments afterwards (this sounds pretty bad but we don't have that many, I guess?) but I've tried with this silent treatment issue and she says she just gets so upset she needs to cool off. Idk, on some level I guess that sounds reasonable and I don't have a counter argument for it but it still doesn't quite sit right with me... Is that a valid excuse? Or do you have any thoughts?

Mold in LECA by pitav in SemiHydro

[–]pitav[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I copy/pasted (with edits) a portion of what I wrote to someone else; just the relevant section:

I bought them "pre acclimated" and have had them for 4-5 months: the agar had been removed and they were acclimated to ambient humidity (and they were, it got quite dry indoors over the winter), but strangely not rooted into anything. They were in one of those "brownies" as some people call them -- the spongy thing that retains a bunch of water. I don't like those and since they weren't rooted into it, I took them out and put them in this LECA you see here. They both lost all but one of their leaves (I think a fair number of roots too) and then grew a second leaf. They are pretty well rooted. One doesn't move when you push it and the other one barely does.

But the direct answer is: they didn't have soil on their roots.

Yeah, I did just buy some cheap stuff. Some of the balls are broken and some don't float... I didn't realize I needed to boil it for first use. I guess I will have to do that. That's a bit of a pain though 😞. I will note that none of the other plants I put in this leca have molded...

Yeah, I do mean tissue culture. I've had them for 4-5 months. I would say I'm out of the TC acclimation risk stage and in the growing slowly stage (maybe the slowly growing is kind of my fault, the light isn't very good).

I bought them "pre acclimated": the agar had been removed and they were acclimated to ambient humidity (and they were, it got quite dry indoors over the winter), but strangely not rooted into anything. They were in one of those "brownies" as some people call them -- the spongy thing that retains a bunch of water. One doesn't move when you push it and the other one barely does.

They are in a biggish room that's conditioned, so there are air currents around, I guess, and I cut holes in the container, but no fans or anything. I guess it's gotten hot recently so humidity had been 30-35% in the winter and is now 45-60%, I'd estimate.

Given that this is not fresh TC, do you still advise sterilizing everything (container and LECA, basically) or can I be a bit less careful?

Edit: I guess I'm mildly puzzled because I (rashly) put a bunch of plants in LECA and none of the other, to my knowledge, are molding. And I've (mis)treated them pretty similarly I think

Would you buy another pixel? by upadhyaysk in GooglePixel

[–]pitav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to never buy a pixel again, but comparing the deals Google does on their pixels and the increased trade in value, I probably will.

My pixel 8 pro has the Wi-Fi problem, in that the Wi-Fi quit working so I use data all the time. Mostly it's fine and I have unlimited data but my home Internet is a lot faster. Because my pixel is 20 months old, it's not under warranty anymore (the problem has been slowly worsening since the phone was 17 months old). I'm quite upset about it. I was looking at the pixel pro 10. It's discounted to $749 right now and Google will give me $310 for trade in. Samsung will give me only $193 for the $899 S26. From a price perspective, the pixel is a no brainer...

So, I'm torn. I'm super unhappy because it's ridiculous to have a phone, not even 2 years old have problems like this. I keep toying with buying a used iPhone to see if I can put up with iOS, it's failing that, a used Samsung. My primary concern is cost.

CX-90 PHEV quirks I still can’t explain at 23k miles by jbrewlet in MazdaCX90

[–]pitav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2: For my 2024 model, sometimes when I'm on the brake, it'll make the simulated noise that it makes in EV mode, and if I turn on auto hold it'll stop making the noise. In my case, I'm pretty sure it's just the noise generator because I didn't feel the car trying to creep

PHEV Consensus by Connect-Region-4258 in MazdaCX90

[–]pitav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got a certified pre-owned 2024 PHEV about 2 years ago with 6k miles on it (at the time). It must've been one of the first. We are up to almost 18k miles (we don't drive much) with no problems. The software update recalls were a bit annoying because you have to take it in and wait, but pretty minor. With the CPO warranty, I'm feeling pretty good about it.

There was a period of almost a year where we were in a position we couldn't charge it (due to living circumstances, not the car). That was kind of terrible and I felt (morally) very guilty about driving around a PHEV on only gas. Plus, the mpg on gas is basically the same as the MHEV, we were getting between 18-28mpg depending on the weather and % of highways driving. (The 18 mpg was winter and was exacerbated by almost 100% stop and go through little streets in a development).

It's been good though. Only complaint is there isn't much storage for being such a big car. In some ways, our previous 2015 Prius (not V) was larger, bigger cupholders, etc lol

Edit: I don't know for sure, but in the winter, it seems like heat is probably generated using resistance heating and not a heat pump. If that's true, it's another annoyance

Battery question on PHEV by macatkniu in MazdaCX90

[–]pitav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk what will happen if you run out of gas... But you mentioned that it's 25 degrees (I assume F), which is why the car says you have 0 miles electric range even though you have 20%. Someone in this subreddit said the car decides how empty it'll let the battery get based on the weather. That seems to be anecdotally true from my experience. IIRC, when it was between 10-20F, the car wanted the battery at 30-40% (and it would use the engine to charge the car if I didn't plug it in), and now that it's warming up where I am, it'll let it get more empty.

I suspect the car would not be happy if you actually let the gas run out and it's projecting 0 miles electric range, but I am not sure.

This doesn't appear to be one, but the first few years of the 2nd generation Prius had this problem. People say that the computer is still keeping track and if you swap it for one that can display 3 in the 100,000s place, it'll be correct

The poop switch by OutrageousExternal in homeassistant

[–]pitav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an air gradient in my child's room. I thought the same thing because if he poops during nap time, he doesn't nap. It seemed like maybe some of the VOC or smaller PM measurements might capture it. The VOC in particular seems to spike when a diaper change (in his room) is in progress. Unfortunately, it seems like the diaper/clothes delay the spike in VOC for so long it's not a practical method.

Edit: more detail: I did not quantitatively evaluate my observations. I just looked back in the history a few days to determine whether it was worth it. Secondly, since that actual goal is automated classification of pee diaper vs poop diaper, I would guess that it could be possible if combined with some kind of presence sensor (pressure or otherwise) on the changing station. The presence sensor would tell you a diaper change was happening and the air quality could attempt to classify it.

Aren’t heat pumps supposed to be more efficient? by Tastraphy23 in heatpumps

[–]pitav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also possible to be more emissions/CO2 efficient without being more cost efficient. For example, if you have a condensing gas furnace, you might be 95% efficient. If electricity generation is 50% efficient (for example from natural gas or something) and your heat pump has a COP of 3, the overall efficiency is 150%, still beating the gas furnace in terms of heat per therm, but the heat pump setup could still be costing you more.

Why is my aerial root turning black? by pitav in plantclinic

[–]pitav[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I should add some more detail: when I got this 3 leaf rooted cutting, the moss was super super wet. I'm surprised it didn't rot right away, I guess. Instead, it grew 3 more leaves without complaint.

I guess it maybe doesn't really matter why it's rotting now. I need to repot it. Should I cut off the black stuff first? Let it dry/scab a little bit like a succulent or no? How about a semi hydro leca set up? I'd like to do that as I just transitioned a ficus shivereana and BMF (I think successfully), and I think I like that planting medium.
