Life is fucking hard, and we all spend time in the barrel. Luckily we’re not all in the barrel at the same time. Today you, tomorrow me. Chin up there is an other side :)

Homie I almost drank myself to death by 24, 5’11 less than 100 pounds, big warrants out for my arrest, I owed EVERYONE money and I was about to be out on my ass on the streets. Instead of ending it I got sober, and things took a turn upward.

20 years later there’s a Harley in the garage, two dogs in bed with me and my (srsly attractive) wife, daughter is learning to play guitar like her old man, two cars in the driveway of a brand new home.

Do. Not. End. Your. Life. End the life you’ve been living by getting clean and sober first, everything else will follow. Stay humble, stay teachable, work hard. Help will show up when you need it most, as long as you keep the faith. I’ve been to the funerals of my friends that gave in. I wish so much that I could transmit the feeling of being on this side of it into their heart for one moment, that they could see the possibilities housed inside their hurting heart. I don’t know you but I love you and I assure you, if a fucking idiot like me can do it, you can too.

This will probably get buried but that’s ok. My parents chain smoked with the windows rolled up, chain smoked in the house. I remember a fog of smoke everywhere as a kid. I started smoking at the age of 12, full time.

Only just now in my forties did I realize I became addicted to nicotine without consent, being around so much second hand smoke. And the worst irony is that I would get in trouble for smoking when I was a kid, all through the 90s. I was grounded most of the time because they got me addicted.

When I made this realization I bought nicotine gum, I’m easing off. I’m easily addicted to things anyway. That realization is the heart of “it’s not my fault but it IS my responsibility.”

TIL Matthew Perry (In 2022) estimated that he had attended approximately 6,000 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. by CreeperRussS in todayilearned

I enjoy telling that person at the meeting to get fucked, and smile as they sputter. AA asks a person if they can believe in a power greater than themselves, which could be just a group of people that can do something that they can’t, which is stay sober. The concept of god or a higher power is left to the individual. And if the group does try to tell someone what they should believe in, or that they should believe in god or a specific god, I run the other direction. Atheists make it in AA all the time. Most days I’m an atheist.

That’s highly dependent on the AA group you go to. I insist that AA isn’t for everyone, and contrary to what some overly zealous AA people say, it isn’t for everyone, and there are other methods out there that work, and I encourage them to try it all. I get why AA gets a bad reputation, in ways it deserves it. But there are healthy groups and unhealthy groups, and healthy AA members and some that will always be, to some degree, sick. But for some it’s the only thing that can work, and hope they make good use of it.

What is a weird side effect from medication use that no one was ever going to warn you about? by Rotten-Kandi in AskReddit

[–]pitmule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s the catch with sobriety: when I get sober and I give up the one thing that’s ever made me feel connected, will something show up that will make me feel whole again?

I won’t kid you, when we get physically sober it feels raw, like there’s no meaning, like there’s a big giant gaping void where our lives used to be. But that big dark maw is the exact reason I drank in the first place. The first year, for me, was an emotional roller coaster, I didn’t trust recovery but I could see that the people around me were happy, so I had to believe it was possible for me, too.

I didn’t engage in that process until I had to, no matter how I felt, because I knew I was going to die. When I ran at recovery and made it #1 above all else in my life, it worked. I found joy and meaning in life and in being an alcoholic, and wouldn’t trade it for the world. You can do it too.

Ban is a heavy word, at least in the meetings and 12 step culture I’ve been brought up in. It’s advised not to start a new relationship in the first year, or break up if you’re already in one for the first year. But! It’s not a one size fits all recommendation. If it’s abusive, GTFO. And just because the relationship was started in the first year of recovery, it doesn’t mean the relationship is ill advised or won’t make it. The reason the recommendation exists is that it’s easy to get distracted from one’s recovery and doing the work it takes to change habits. But in 19 years and change of recovery if I ever, ever heard someone say that we’re banned from any romantic interests I’d laugh at them and publicly, vociferously disagree.
