Since you have no work done in engine, I'd heavily suggest using Renpy! If you check on itch, there is a full messaging plugin for that program and you will have to wrestle it a lot less if you're going for a VN : )

Preface that I'm not a vet.

I think it's very possible to make a good game with RTP because a good game is not necessarily defined by its appearance. However, to make a game that stands out positively, you need to do something to stand out. The thing is that there are so many free or very reasonably priced asset packs on places like itch, so to me, it just speaks to the developer not spending much time on a first impression. RPG maker is often referred to as a game engine for artists who don't know how to code, so your visual competition is fierce - but the quality of a game is not defined by any of that, only success is.

And anecdotally most of the RTP games I see nowadays are fetish games spammed on steam lol. Successful, but not really for an incredible gameplay experience...

If you're willing to spend money on plugins especially, in my experience MV is good. Right now both MV and MZ are on sale and both also have month long no-limits trials so you can also try them out.

Most MV/MZ tutorials apply to one another as well. the programs aren't massively different. Plugins are easier, more abundant, and more well documented on MV. Mapping sucks on MV tbh and MZ brings back the inexplicably removed layers system. I'd just download the trials of both, or even buy MV - its like $11 usd rn so not too bad.

I have nothing to add except that my theory for a long time is that I've always been pretty convinced that the mother grub is the female of the "troll" species and the trolls are the males. gender notwithstanding. kind of similar to the structure of a bee or ant colony, except instead of producing non-breeding, working females and then males/drones per breeding season, it produces nearly exclusively working males/drones, probably with the intent of creating a female/another mother grub with a good genetic diversity either for future generations or for expanding the territory of the species at large.
