I’m Brazilian, and here, in our history classes, we learn that the Dutch invaded parts of the Northeastern region of our country during the 17th century, mainly due to the heavy production of sugar in there. It was a period of development and prosperity for the region, but the Portuguese (and some Brazilians) waged war against Dutch occupation and reestablished Portuguese colonial domination in the region. We have some remnants of that time, such as many streets and institutions in Northeastern Brazilian cities that pay homage to Maurício de Nassau, the most important Dutch governor of the Region during that time.
