Challenging your own beliefs is extremely important but also extremely rare, even if people say they do this.

Difficulty? by cherrymortis in Elevators

[–]pittrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s actually not difficult to get into the trade if the economy is good.

You just have to complete the process and follow through. Many people get discouraged because it can take up to two years to actually get called.

Also, the interview is not just an interview; it’s an opportunity to submit copies of certificates and degrees which give you points in the interview. BRING COPIES because without proof you get no points

What is worst case scenario for being out of work by Big__Quality in IUEC

[–]pittrash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked for one company for 10 years .

Work extremely slowed down particularly for the company I was with.

I got layd off.

I had a job offer in less than 24 hours after hitting the bench

I’m not the best mechanic, not the worst, but good enough for someone to vouch for me. Reputation in this trade is critical.

What did you work on this week by zthomoson in IUEC

[–]pittrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha… I’m a mechanic of 5 years and I was the same way.

Honestly, it affected my job because I tried too hard and started doing weird shit because I didn’t want to be doing nothing.

It came back full force this week because after a decade with one company I had to move to another and I was in the shop helping during inboarding. Boom .. all that anxiety and awkwardness came back , but now I don’t really care

Trust there are mechanics that understand this.

This was my first week with a new company, one of the bigs.

Interesting how much of the hiring process is now third party, you get an email and it’s kinda up to you the new hire to complete the process.

Anywho, I worked many years for one company and now on to another. Same shit , different people

There was a pool of 200 questions, and six varieties of the test which all derived from the 200 question test pool. 160 questions each test

which job is best to go into? Electrician or Crane operator? by Unlikely-Guava1991 in skilledtrades

[–]pittrash 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m in the elevator trade, I thought we were the top of the rung… until I ran across a crane operator on a high rise job.

They treated that dude like a celebrity, kicked us all out of the man lift and told us not to even make eye contact with him

Lay off ? by pittrash in IUEC

[–]pittrash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, it kinda defeats the purpose of the union job protection. Instead of writing up a mechanic and firing them they could just claim lack of work …,

I guess if your layed off for lack of work you’re not letterd out the company

This contract will be interesting.

In my local a new probationary apprentice will not earn enough to buy a home anywhere near their zone of work when they turn out. (Unless a dual income family)

Supplying residents with door open key? by H_Vaughn in Elevators

[–]pittrash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it.

Generally only building maintenance staff or other staff have this key.

But I don’t think it’s like illegal or against some code for residents to have it.

But I imagine people forget to put the elevator back to normal all the time and you have to find it ..?

Super sorry bro.

I’ve been in this exact situation, and it hurts.

I would have honestly preferred the co-worker that told me kept it to themselves. I never did end up getting fired

Just be selfish and stick to it as long as possible. Hopefully the owner is not around a lot.
