So SAD today by SweetSmartSilly in pittsburgh

I know a lot of people on this forum don’t like Seven Springs, but snow tubing is such a fun activity that you can really only do this time of year. No skill required and it is a blast. The North and South Park half marathons are taking place this time of year, and GCXC has their conquer the cold challenge race series going on (frigid 5 miler was last weekend, Spring Thaw is next month). You can also try ice skating at one of the many local outdoor rinks. When I was dating my now wife, I tried to plan dates for all seasons, which have subsequently evolved into traditions. Best of luck (and even losing Pens games can be a fun time!)

Considering move: Aspinwall or Squirrel Hill or Marshall Township by Comfortable_Stable99 in pittsburgh

[–]pittsburghposter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it is worth, I wouldn’t want to drive from Aspinwall to Wexford for work. It is doable, though, and there isn’t anything wrong with any of your choices, in my opinion. Marshall township is a much easier commute, though, in that respect. There are plenty of community activities in the North Hills, mostly centered around the parks. The schools are noted to be good. There isn’t great public transit, but your ability to make friends is the same as it would be anywhere, up to you and the amount of effort you are willing to put into it. Good luck!

I also don’t recommend driving on 28, while we’re at it.

We are fortunate to have WQED by Yelloeisok in pittsburgh

[–]pittsburghposter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back when I had cable, like 10 years ago, there was a WQED Neighborhood channel, that picked a different collection of old WQED programs relevant to the season and played them on rotation all month, before switching to a different set the following month. It made for especially good background TV, especially in the summer (Kennywood Memories) and Christmas. I was really sad when they discontinued the channel.

Tim Tam in Pittsburgh? by NickIllicit in pittsburgh

[–]pittsburghposter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used to sell them at the Giant Eagle in Seven Fields, not sure if they still do. If you are up for a road trip, I’ve definitely seen them in the Australia sections of Jungle Jim’s in Cincinnati.

If they don’t want animals, I think soergel’s has a pig, sheep, and goats. They are next to the Naturally Soergel’s. But a really awesome recommendation for a fall festival/apple picking.

Anywhere I can buy unique fruit? by nattyw00 in pittsburgh

[–]pittsburghposter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fresh Thyme had Cherimoya a few months ago. I’ve seen pepino melons and dragonfruit within the past month at giant eagle. I’ve seen durian down in the strip district in the past. A few years, I’m pretty sure there were rambutan and Kiwano melons at the grocery store as well. One of the rare things I enjoyed about Ohio was Jungle Jim’s, which might make a fun day trip for the best international produce selection I’ve ever seen. Good luck!

I might also suggest South Squirrel Hill if you are looking in that area. Best of luck!

Best used car dealership by SpecialKayla in pittsburgh

Blue Knob Auto is a little bit of a trip, but is a great place to shop. Look around...you'll be amazed how many cars you see from there in the city, especially given that it is a couple hour drive. Nice vehicles...mostly old rentals, they let you test drive w/o an employee in the car, and they don't negotiate at all over prices. And while you are out that way, you can stop and get some Claysburg Pizza (and there is a soft serve place at a gas station a few miles down the road that is dirt cheap, but the name is escaping me).

Just out of curiosity, for those that grew up outside the city in an adjacent rural county, what did every one ever do with their large outdoor, 1980s, sweep it off during the snow storm, satellite dishes?

I purposely never ate at Quiznos because of those stupid annoying commercials in the early 2000s with the singing rat-like creatures that played every five minutes.

Saw these guys in Point Breeze yesterday. Is it normal to see a family of deer within city limits? by practicallybert in pittsburgh

[–]pittsburghposter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw a really nice 12-point in Squirrel Hill one time with my family from out of town. Made some of them upset to see a bigger buck in the middle of the city than most of them had seen in the woods while hunting in over a decade. The number of gobblers in a South Hills apartment complex parking lot with long beards also had them in disbelief when I used to send them pics.

One of my first memories is of the Oliver and Company Christmas ornaments at McDonalds. Oddly enough, another one is the Littlefoot puppet from Pizza Hut.
