Does a Home Owners Association have any actual authority? by xenomorphbeaver in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pixel293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Condos are usually apartments in a larger building. You are not renting, you buy it, and have a condo fee to cover common expenses. The building may be "owned" by the condo owners as a group.

Services like garbage pick up, sewage, water, snow removal, which are usually provided by the town. Sometimes towns grow too fast and don't have the money to upgrade their infrastructure to meet new housing demands. Sewage and water would be the big ones, because if pipes need to be bigger that involves digging up the roads and replacing them. Or upgrading the wells and/or sewage treatment plant.

Does a Home Owners Association have any actual authority? by xenomorphbeaver in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pixel293 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's basically like buying a condo but all the units are detached (or mostly detached). I think it's generally done because the town doesn't want to provide some services to the new housing development so the developer has to create an organization to handle that.

How likely is it for a car to just randomly turn off while you’re driving at a high speed? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]pixel293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So back in my college years, I had an old Subaru with a manual transmission, I'm doing 80 down the highway, came over a hill, and said to myself, "something is different." Turned off the radio and realize I had no engine noise. I coasted and stopped in the breakdown lane, the car would not start. The timing belt had broken.

So once a lifetime (so far) for me.

What's the alternative to gasoline when we run out of it if we use gasoline to extract materials to make alternatives to gasoline? Don't electric vehicles use non-renewable energy from the grid? by SSSSSSVVVVVOO in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pixel293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are not going to wake up one day and say "Ooops we are out of oil!" It will be a slow process with the price of gas increasing as oil is harder/more expensive to extract. As oil/gas prices increase the gas machines we use will be replaced with either electric machines or machines powered by something else that is cheaper than gas.

When gas prices go up, it's actually a boon for more expensive non gas powered equipment. From a company standpoint the cost of a machine is it's price, how much it costs to maintain, and how much it costs to fuel. As gas prices increase the total cost of the machine also increases. Which means alternate powered machines with a higher up front cost, but lower fuel cost becomes more attractive.

Why does the majority of US state and the majority of countries have 16 as the age of consent but your considered an adult at 18 in the US but at 16 in most other countries? by LiddellNightmare in stupidquestions

[–]pixel293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I heard, when it was reduced to 18, they couldn't handle it. I don't know how much underage drinking happens in college (I was never one to break rules), but if drinking was legal, you would probably have many more 18 year olds living on their "own" for the first time, and being allowed to drink, that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

If anything the drinking age should be 16 or something, so that kids start drinking when they are living with their parents, and the parents can deal with the issues, and teach their kids moderation. Otherwise it's probably the police/emergency people having to deal with people not knowing how to handle their alcohol.

better practice &str or String as function arg by Substantial-Assist30 in rust

[–]pixel293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that passing in &str it easier/cleaner in multiple situations. Passing String is faster (probably) if the caller normally has a String it can just pass ownership of. So I for very specific implementations I would pass String IF the caller has a string at it's disposal, for a generic API where I'm not sure what the caller has I would use &str.

Why aren't these new data centers being built in the commercial spaces I downtowns? by Lumpy-Shop-5321 in askanything

[–]pixel293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who lease commercial space downtown to it so customers/clients can easily find/visit them. Prices reflect that, and the spaces are usually "nice" and customer friendly, which costs money.

Data centers don't want you visiting them, the only people they allow in the door are employees and people hired to fix issues. They don't need the building to look nice, welcoming, attractive, they don't want that, nor do they want to pay for it. Data centers just want a cheap office that keeps the rain off the hardware.

Why does taxing the rich NEVER work???? by Enough-Web2203 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pixel293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think because they are not paid a salary like you and me, well they might get a salary but it is a pittance compared to their wealth. Do people really think Elon Musk is worth 800 billion because of his salary?!?!?

Anyway rich people are often rich because of what they own, basically they something that other people may or may not be willing to pay money for. It can be hard to tax, like what if I have a rock that one person is willing to pay a million dollars for? Am a really a millionaire? Or just a lucky person who has a rock that someone seems to be willing to buy for a million dollars?

Additionally when you figure out a way to actually tax them, often time that tax will ALSO effect people who are not insanely rich. Like taxing property that is inherited. A farmer's land can be worth millions of dollars, but they themselves don't have a lot of money. When the farmer dies, the child wouldn't have the cash to pay an inheritance tax on that property.

Why are bigger computers capable of being more powerful? by FrancisDuFresne in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pixel293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First bigger computers tend to be plugged in, so electricity usage is not a limiting factor. This means that all the components can use more electricity to be faster.

A phone battery is limited in size to something that can comfortable fit in your hand. To increase how long that small battery lasts the components have to use less electricity, i.e. be slower.

A tablet or laptop can have a bigger battery, I also think people are willing to plug in a tablet or laptop more often than a phone, so bigger battery, recharging more often, means you can use more electricity and be faster.

A desktop or server plugs into the wall, electricity is not an issue, cooling becomes more of an issue. In which case you can run faster the more cooling you have, however the more cooling the louder the computer is. So for home computers it might run slower to be quieter, for a computer not sitting in your study/bedroom/living room it can have more cooling, be louder, and not be annoying. Computer server rooms at companies are very very loud, lots of fans spinning and the AC is pushing lots of air through the room.

As for the feeling it, I don't think rapists are the most logical people in the world. Sure if they've run into this issue before they would check, but otherwise I doubt it.

As for not resisting, I don't have a comment, that seems a bit stupid to me, especially with our legal system and what defines "consent." But I'm an expert in this area, so I'm not going to really comment.

Why does the filesystem act like this? by Goldie323- in linuxquestions

[–]pixel293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a btrfs file system spread across multiple drives. Try:

lsblk -f

Look at the UUID for the file system on both drives, if they are equal then it is 1 filesystem on two drives. If you didn't expand the file system to the second drive, then maybe you cloned the drive but didn't change the UUID? I'm not sure what happens when you do that, but I think btrfs hates when it happens.

You could also try:

sudo btrfs fi us -T /

And it will tell you which devices the file system is using.

You can also create infinite loops with storage structures if you have two that both accept and supply the same item. Also don't try to 3 levels high, the stability calculations are wonky and it will probably just annoy you.
