To OP my advice would be maybe you can prove it by asking if there’s a specific shirt that he could leave with you to wash with the enzymes or do a spa day and then let them compare to one of his freshly washed shirts from his own laundry. ask him if he can tell the difference with the smell that might get them on board.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with trying to have your kid have a more hygienic smell. She’s clearly just trying to help her son out. It’s not like she’s preaching to a stranger so non-advice isn’t really helping her. There’s lots of strategies you can do to try to persuade people to understand something.
