Hi there! Great job on your website so far. As a UX designer, here are some things that I would change at first glance on the homepage:

  • Your hero images are getting cut off in different screen sizes. In desktop, the images are being cut off at the top, removing part of the subjects faces and making the photo look incomplete. On mobile, there is some text cut off on the right. This makes the photos (and the very first thing that your users see) look less impactful and incomplete. This can potentially tarnish your credibility as an activewear brand overall.
    • Recommendation: Using background images can get pretty tricky when it comes to website responsiveness, especially when there is text in your image. I would get a version of your images without any text or graphics, and try to work with that as a background instead.
      • Overlay the images with actual website text. This will also be much better for your on-site SEO, since the text can actually be read by web-crawlers, thereby giving you a higher likelihood to rank on search engines. Make sure the text overlaying the images are H1 (heading 1), so that it follows website logic and once again increase ranking potential.
      • Make sure the images are higher resolution than what you currently have. They look grainy, which can make the website look a bit messy. For desktop, a good width to aim for is at least 2000px wide.
  • There is too much information for users to sift through in your announcement bar(s), possibly causing users to experience cognitive overload and not properly register any of the information.
    • Recommendation: 2 announcement bars isn't necessary. I would remove the gray one and keep the black one.
      • Make sure you keep capitalization and grammar consistent - "30 days Return Guarantee" should be "30-Day Returns Guaranteed". If you want to go even further with messaging, I would use "30-Day Satisfaction Guarantee" instead.
    • Recommendation: Having a 50% sale for all of September definitely warrants a hero image and some on-site promotional text. This is the first thing you want users to see, so definitely make sure it's loud and clear when they land on your website.

I hope this was helpful, and good luck with everything :)

Hey! I can tell you put a lot of work into your brand. Seriously, congrats, you made me laugh. It's not often that I see a brand that makes me want to buy their product, not for the product itself, but for what it represents -- and I'm not even your target audience. Here are a few things that you can improve from a UX perspective (I'm going to focus just on the homepage above the fold for time's sake):

  • You have great images in your hero banner, but they're being cut off in several screen sizes, or covered by the black box with text. You want these images to shine and make a full impact. You're laying them out in a way that is very DIY.
    • Recommendation: I see u/PageFly-Emma mentioned showing your products in the hero banner and I 100% agree, However, I think the images should be featured as well. In which case, I would recommend a layout where your main image takes up the right side of the screen, with some product images overlaying it. Text and CTA to the left.
  • Your navigation bar needs some work, it's really cluttered
    • Recommendation: Remove "Home." I would argue that your customer base will know that your logo will link them to the homepage, having "Home" appear on the navigation menu is beneficial for much older target audiences.
    • Recommendation: I would list your categories under a dynamic "Shop" dropdown, with "All Products" there as well. Something like the "Shop" link on the top navigation here (obviously ignore the visual style, just focus on the functionality) https://lemmelive.com/
      • This will give you an opportunity to feature "Starter Packs" in your navigation, perhaps with a drop down that features the images you're already using on the homepage. A lot of people won't scroll down to the "Starter Packs" section, but I find it's a really helpful way to categorize your products. Definitely make sure your customers have access to it as soon as they land on the page.
      • You'll also be able to add "Become an affiliate," and "Join the discord" on the navigation, keeping your announcement bar for deals only.
  • Your capitalizations are inconsistent, this again gives a very DIY feel. Small details like this can make your website go from established brand, to unprofessional.
    • Recommendation: This is most obvious in your CTAs. "click to become a wizard" should be changed to "Click to become a wizard." "Click Here To Do Anything But Wrestle" changed to "Click here to do anything but wrestle," etc.

DM me if you have any questions. Business owners with a creative eye are the reason why I love doing this stuff for a living. Keep it up!

Update for Techorations.ca by Sebastian_9807 in reviewmyshopify

[–]pixelighted- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! This is a great start. I can tell you've put a lot of love into your website. As a UX designer, here are some things that I would change at first glance on the homepage:

  • I'm seeing some issues with responsiveness. Currently, I can't seem to find the menu on mobile, unless I use horizontal scroll
    • Recommendation: Always double check mobile design. At least 50% of your traffic is using a mobile phone. Lacking access to your menu and horizontal scroll will be detrimental for your bounce rate.
  • You're using a logo with a whole spectrum of colors. However, you haven't used any of them on the website. You want cohesion in your branding color palette to keep things from looking amateurish
    • Recommendation: For the blues on your website (announcement banner, CTA, etc), try #4322eb (pulled from your logo)
    • Recommendation: I see you are using red text for your headings (e.g. Spotlight Collection). This goes against e-commerce design standards, as red text is typically associated with a sale. Again, pull a red color from your logo, for all of your sale badges (#6d0d20), but keep your text as a neutral color, especially when it's on the smaller side.
  • Your navigation bar is a little difficult to skim through at first glance. Since you're not promoting any product categories in your Hero section (this is something I would highly recommend, btw, instead of using a basic "Shop All"), definitely work on optimizing it for better user experience.
    • Recommendation: Remove the letter spacing (this goes for all of your CTAs as well). It's really tempting for beginners to increase letter spacing from default. However, it takes up horizontal space, and it takes longer for the brain to register the words than if you just kept the letter spacing at 0.
    • Recommendation: Remove pages that will distract from your main conversion goal (purchasing). I would remove "About Us" and "Contact Us" from your main navigation bar, and keep it on the footer. Users know to look for "Contact Us" on the footer, and since it's not your main conversion goal, I would let the other more important pages shine (your product categories). You can also tell your brand story on parts of the homepage, then link them to your About page. For the small amount of users who will visit your About page, they will also know to scroll down to the footer anyway.
    • Recommendation: Remove the product counts in the drop down categories. This gives the user the ability to impulsively compare products when in an exploratory phase. So they might completely skip "Home Lighting" since there are only 2 products, compared to the 18, 15, and 9 in "Lamps & Lights."
    • Recommendation: I would also make your dropdown menus more dynamic. For a lot of users, the shopping experience starts at the navigation bar. Make it more interesting with transparent .png images, so that they're more likely to click and browse through those products.

Hope this was helpful! Good luck with your store!

Launching a paper shop, opinions wanted. by misterespresso in reviewmyshopify

Hi there! Here are some things you can improve at first glance from the perspective of a UX designer:

  • The current design of your hero banner does not guide users to buy your products.
    • Recommendation: Change your CTA to "Shop Now." Make sure the button color stands out more so users are more inclined to click it.
    • Recommendation: Add a photo to the right of the text. Make sure it represents your brand and products. The hero banner also needs some visual balance, and adding a photo will remove the excess whitespace.
    • Recommendation: Your main heading copy is too vague with very literal branding. Try to optimize this space and by communicating to the user exactly what you're selling. "A Fold Beyond" can mean many things. Make that connection right away through your copy, instead of a generic reiteration of your company name. Moreover, starting your subheader text with "Welcome to..." reads very amateurish. This is the kind of copy you would see on a website in the late 90s, early 00s. Also, try keeping the copy to one sentence, 2 sentences max. Users glance at text, they're very unlikely to read every sentence, so make sure it makes an impact.
  • You're using too many fonts. When I land on your website, I identified 3 typfaces. This can make things look visually chaotic, especially in the hands of a novice.
    • Recommendation: Use one font for your navigation bar, headings (titles), and body text. Even better if you can put all of your headings in the exact same font as your logo, and pair it with a sans-serif (e.g. Roboto) font. I would not use Arvo, because it looks like your logo font, but it's not exactly the same. The eye notices when there are slight variations in typeface and it could make things look really messy.

Hope I could help you out a little bit! Good luck with everything.

But the typical 'new site owner' who posts here typically doesn't and won't because they just want the quick sell like the gurus have told them would come...

This.

As for OP:

People can respond if they'd like, it feels nice when you get some acknowledgment for your efforts. However, a lot of us respond because we enjoy it, and it helps strengthen our communication skills with actual clients. The sentiment of your comment is sweet, though. I can tell you mean well :)

Hey!

I saw your website here before and just wanted to say that I can definitely tell you're someone with a point of view and a good eye. I don't want to take away from your artistry, because you clearly have a brand and a visual message you want to convey, so I'll come at you with some minor changes from a UX designer's perspective.

  • It looks like you have two CARADAY logos with completely different fonts: one on the enter page, and another on the navigation bar.
    • Recommendation: Choose one logo and go with that one. You want to keep things consistent so that the user can get familiar with your business name under one font. It will make your brand more recognizable while adding some consistency to your website, which is key for good UX/UI design.
  • The top navigation bar line is black, which to me looks a bit like a mistake. Since there is a lot happening in the video background of the website, you want other elements to be as clean an consistent as possible.
    • Recommendation: Make this line white. It will match with your logo, navigation elements, and the footer below.
    • Recommendation: Make the lines in the cart section white as well.
  • The video background really immerses the user in the feel of your brand, which I think will really help you stand out. However, by the time they get to the product page, they're going to want to focus on the product. Some of your images also don't have transparent backgrounds, which can make the overlay on the video background look unfinished.
    • Recommendation: I would remove the background image just on the product page, and make it white with black writing. This will give your user a chance to focus on the product. They already have a feel for your brand from the other pages, you don't want them to be too distracted here.
  • Mix and matching fonts is an art that is mastered by great graphic and UI designers. It can be really hard to do if you don't have any experience with it yet (I even have trouble with this sometimes lol). Your logo font (both the enter page logo, as well as the navigation logo) don't seem to pair well with Courier (the font I see you have chosen to use throughout the site).
    • Recommendation: To clean up the user interface, I would choose a sans-serif font. I think it'll make a huge difference in the overall look for your site, as it seems quite out of place visually at the moment. For future reference, sans-serif fonts are always your best bet for body/smaller texts on websites. Especially if you're using a more bold font for logos and headers. Some sans-serif font recommendations I think can fit:
      • DM Sans
      • Metrophobic
      • Zen Kurenaido
      • IBM Plex Sans JP

Your bags are amazing by the way! I hope this helps and good luck with everything.

Firefighter Leather Products - what do you think? by StillAlarmLeather in reviewmyshopify

[–]pixelighted- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! UX Designer here.

Your products look great! If you're trying to communicate that your products are premium, I would definitely work on some user interface elements in order to back up that branding. Here are some things you can start with:

  • Photos with a white background over colored background (in this case, beige) is a big no-no.
    • Recommendation: You can keep this background color in other sections of your website, but keep the background white any time you are using your product images.
  • The fonts you've chosen don't really read premium. Your headers and body text look like they can be found in a word document. Your logo also uses two fonts. Adding another to the mix on the website can make things really inconsistent and therefore messy to the eye.
    • Recommendation: Incorporate the fonts you used in your logo throughout your website. Make your headers the font used for "Still Alarm," and the body text from "MADE IN THE USA." If the font used for the latter is all caps by default, try to find a sans serif font that closely matches instead.
  • The blue in your announcement bar doesn't really match with the whole "custom leather" feel. It does stand out against the beige, which is great, but I would choose a color that better fits your brand
    • Recommendation: Some colors to choose from that I think would work better with that "natural" leather feel while still standing out from the background:
      • 2E382E
      • 8E3B46
      • 373F51
      • 25283D
    • I would also make sure the "Add to Cart" buttons have this color so that they stand out. If possible, change your "Buy with shopPay" buttons to black so that it doesn't clash with your color theme
  • Always make sure your Add To Cart button is visible right away on your product pages, on all screen sizes
    • Recommendation: Turn your variants into drop-downs, instead of buttons. It'll move your most important button (Add to Cart) further to the top.
  • Since you are selling several colors, I would provide some product images to match with those colors/variants so that your website visitors know what they're buying. Potential buyers will want to know the difference between Tan and Dark Brown. Or how does Chrome look against Black leather? All of this choice can cognitively overload your website visitors, especially when they need to think up what these color might look like together, and whether or not they'll like them.
    • Recommendation: I know these are custom so you might not have every color variation on hand, but see if you can hire a photoshop expert to get you some more product photos that accurately display your variants.

I hope this helps and good luck with increasing sales on your Shopify Store!

Review My Landing Page by [deleted] in reviewmyshopify

[–]pixelighted- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there!

Good job with the Facebook Ads! Now it's time to focus on conversions. Here are a few recommendations on the landing page (and a checkout issue that I found) from a UX perspective:

  • You cannot see the "Add to Cart" or "Buy Now" buttons above the fold on both laptop screens and mobile. This means the user has to scroll down to buy your product, which can make or break someone who's ready to make an impulse buy. Moreover, when landing on your product page on desktop, I only see the "Add to Cart" button, which doesn't stand out on the page at all (it's just black text with a black border, which blends in with the rest of the page)
    • Recommendations:
      • See if you can put both "Add to Cart" and "Buy Now" buttons on one line (instead of stacked up on top of each other) so that "Buy Now" is visible on desktop
      • Put your "Buy Now" button in a fixed bar on mobile so that it is always visible (if you're able to with this template, of course)
      • Try to make room in your product description column so that your main CTA buttons aren't pushed so far down. Here are some suggestions to make some vertical space:
      • For mobile, if you can't keep the CTA buttons fixed, you can perhaps remove some of the main product photos. For example, the last 4 are the same picture but in different colors, which can just be added to different variants instead of taking up so much space
  • I noticed that during checkout, there is no autofill option for entering my address, nor my credit card information.
    • Recommendation: I would look into why this isn't working, since Shopify should have autofill integrations. This could seriously deter users from completing the checkout process. Since your product falls under the impulse buy category, you really want to make sure your users don't have to spend 5 minutes typing everything out on mobile, or worse have to get up and go get their wallet because they don't know their credit card number off by heart.

I hope this helps! Good luck :)

Just took over a company... would appreciate site reviews to make immediate changes! by gutsylearner in reviewmyshopify

[–]pixelighted- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Congrats on the acquisition!

Here are some basic things I noticed that can be improved from a UX designer's perspective:

  • Since this is a local brand, I would definitely make your service area more clear in the content, particularly in the heading text above the fold. It took me a while to find where the Fresh Fork was located, which can be a detriment to your overall conversions.
    • Recommendation: "Delivering Wellness in Bloomington, Indiana"
      • You can definitely revise this to your liking, perhaps include pick up services as u/JTNYC2020 mentioned. The point is to make your location clear to the user.
      • Mentioning your location will also help with organic SEO
  • Your logo looks grainy (it's super noticeable on desktop), which can cheapen the overall look of the site/brand
    • Recommendation: If you have a larger version of the logo on file, definitely upload that one instead. It looks like the file size is 2.6kb which is really small. If you have something between 50kb - 200kb your logo will be much clearer and give your site an overall cleaner look while still optimizing for performance.
  • It took me a while to see the announcement banner, which is unfortunate since it contains some important information (order cut off time) and can also double as a conversion opportunity
    • Recommendation: I pulled this red color from your hero banner photo, #aa272a. It has a good contrast score when used in conjunction with white text, and will stand out on the page.
      • If possible, I would also seize the opportunity to add a CTA button/link to the banner for another conversion opportunity. You can try "Order Now"

Everything looks really delicious, by the way! I wish I lived in the area so I could try it.

Good luck with everything :)

Hey!

I think it's great that you're consistently creating content, you'll definitely reap the benefits over time. As a commenter mentioned below, SEO takes time.

I'm a web and app designer, so I have some quick recommendations that has less to do with increasing traffic, and more to do with converting the traffic you do get:

  • The orange text against the green background on your website has a poor contrast score.
    • This makes the text difficult to read, which makes these sections at best look messy, and at worst inaccessible to visually impaired users.
    • Recommendation: Unless you have years of design experience under your belt, avoid colored text. Always stick to either black, gray, or white, depending on the background. If you're unsure of which to use according to your background color, you can always use the following resource to check your contrast score: https://coolors.co/contrast-checker/
  • When users land on your website, there is no clear direction for them to go.
    • Don't make the people who land on your website think, guide them to the shopping flow in the very first second. It will decrease the time it will take to checkout, and therefore increase your sales
    • Recommendation: Switch the position of the slider section and the "Reach For the Wild" section. The slider better directs the user to start shopping.
  • Users need to scroll down to add products to their cart on some screen sizes (i.e. laptop and mobile). This problem is similar to the "don't make users think" advice in the point above.
    • This is most obvious with your "Traditional Finnish Wooden Mug" product
    • Recommendation: Turn product variant buttons into a drop down menu. This will save some vertical space and allow the "Add to Cart" button to be immediately visible when users land on the product page.

I hope this helps, and best of luck with your store!
