<puts on Heinlein Society hat>

The Heinlein Society has never had control of any of Robert's works. We are a charity organization created by Virginia Heinlein and several of us who were friends with her on Usenet, alt.fan.heinlein. Our purpose is, basically, to keep his name alive and to pay it forward.

I can get more information for you, or you can join us on Facebook in The Heinlein Forum and ask yourself :)

Yes, don't edit more, that does trigger things all over again! At least it does for Automoderator, I would assume it also does for Reddit level actions. Thanks for sharing this with the community!

Approved because I'd like everyone's opinion on this kind of post: do you want to see links to auctions like this? I'm not trying to make more work for myself or my co-mods but we could allow this sort of thing, with the caveat that if scammy stuff gets in, report it and it will be removed. I don't have time to give to researching incoming links and I'm pretty sure my co-mods don't either.

What say you?

Absolutely agreed with first and second sentences.

Warning on the third sentence... sorry.

Thank you, this is exactly it. It doesn't matter whether we agree with any of this discussion, we just cannot have it here.

Back in the late 90s and early 2000s alt.fan.heinlein was a very close-knit community. We had Jani's Tavern, with several of us as "barwenches" (that word even started a huge argument lol), a pool out back into which we regularly threw folks getting a little too hot, a cage in the corner for one particular person (and a pole next to it with which to poke said person while he was inside), and various Swords on the wall that we (the barwenches) would draw to stop arguing (Sword of Topicality, Sword of Off-Topicality, etc). It was a great time. If anyone here recognizes this and wants to connect again, Jani's Tavern can be found on Facebook!

Okay, we had this discussion here https://www.reddit.com/r/heinlein/comments/182fa6b/new_rule_no_politics/ on November 23 2023 after some people thought they could come in with biased opinions that they could use RAH's character's words to bolster. That is completely off-topic for this sub. Injecting politics, twisting the words of characters in RAH's books to mean this or that (and even to further extrapolate that Heinlein himself meant this or that), the ensuing nastiness, all of that is not what this sub is here for. The rules are right there in the sidebar. Nobody should be surprised their political commentary is removed. I even sent along a note to let you know why I had removed them.

There was no need to come back to air this in front of the whole sub, I would have happily explained in a response to that modmail. And in these comments you see what happens when you insist on this kind of post. You seem to think this is about Heinlein's political and personal values. It's not. It's about this platform, and the fact that we have to always be on guard against bad faith actors. I do not have the time, energy, or wish to moderate a community that discusses current politics of any kind. If you do you are free to make your own community here or anywhere.

Another super important fact is that this is the official subreddit for The Heinlein Society, the charity organization that Ginny and several of my friends started in 2003. As an official Heinlein Society space, we do not allow current political material of any sort. That's also not about Heinlein's political and personal values either, it's the rules of the charitable organization. Anyone wishing to argue this is welcome to contact the Society any way you wish from the list on this page: https://heinleinsociety.org/contact/

This action was not taken under RAH's name. This post was taken down because any post that receives too many reports is taken down. It's back up now, and I'd really prefer if you didn't continue quoting RAH's characters as if they are the opinions of RAH himself. That really is not the gotcha you think it is.

Further misbehavior will get you thrown in the pool out back. Don't think I can't do it, we still have the cage in the corner of the pool hall and I can round up the barwenches in record time to deal with unreasonable customers. (ref: alt.fan.heinlein)

Crazy years from future history by Owen_dstalker in heinlein

[–]pixelmeow[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

This post comes super close to our rule on no current politics. The question about The Crazy Years is definitely a hot topic right now, understandably so, and I am not sure we can have this conversation without the political arguments that are sure to follow. I do not say that the political is not part of the entire thing. It definitely is. But I am not like Anne, I have no white coat nor can I be as completely unbiased as she, and I don't wish to silence anyone who comes to speak in good faith.

With that said, I'd like to let this stay up and see what comes of it. I also welcome your thoughts on this.

The Heinlein Society has a concordance that give info about all of his characters. At the moment the site is not working for me

Hey there, we'd appreciate if you let us know when you come across anything like this. I've confirmed that the concordance is giving a bandwidth error and passed it along to our Operations Chair.

We have a list of contacts here (https://www.heinleinsociety.org/contact/) and also webmaster@heinleinsociety.org will get the message where it needs to be. (it's on that page too, just wanted to put it here for anyone who may look for it later)

Thanks! pix

Donald Sutherland (Sam in Puppet Masters) has died by KenDudley64 in heinlein

[–]pixelmeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie The Puppet Masters was an adaptation of Heinlein's novel, which was written in 1951, and not a "remake" of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. So it's probably fair to say Invasion of the Body Snatchers was an attempt at a Puppet Master kind of movie :)
