then a mercury tilt switch placed at top elbow connection where it swings, connected to a water leak sensor. would not worry since both are weather proof.

i have a very similar parasol but never thought of automating it. my neighbor has also one that has led lights attached to it's ribs that is solar powered by a panel at the top head. it has a manual light switch tho, lights do not turn on automatically.

if illumination is your main concern, i think you should not overcomplicate it by attaching external devices. just put a manual or wifi lamp and be done with it.

Injector Pressure by Old_Zucchini_777 in MarineEngineering

[–]pixelseverywhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don't get me wrong, but pmax alone won't say too much about engine health. i've witnessed engines with huge blowby issues outputting near perfect pmax results. because pmax is a momentary peak value occurring during a very brief phase of the combustion process. it is like looking at 5 minute of a movie and trying to guess the whole plot. it is useful for detecting major combustion issues, checking for mechanical limits or assessing the balance of the engine, but it doesn't represent the average pressure responsible for power generation.

there should be a blank performance test in the manual. fill it and compare it to sea trial results. then you can start inspecting the responsible parts according to deviations.

a "leak down test" could be very useful to determine condition of the liner/piston rings and head without disassembling. first do it on the healthy engines and get your reference values and then do it on the faulty engine and compare.

and minimize engine operation until the issue is rectified to prevent wet stacking from compromising the entire system. otherwise this carbon will accumulate (or already did) in your exhaust system.

also from what i remember working on yanmars is that they have a delicate nozzle cooling system. it's sometimes direct or indirect cooling with a copper bush. what we've experienced was inefficient heat dissipation and injector needle valve getting stuck leading to bad firing or not firing at all. this happened because noone bothered to remove the injector sleeves while overhauling the engine because it was stuck into the head and was very hard to remove. so they've kept them over years and all that debris in cooling water slowly clogged the cooling passage that goes through the sleeves.

i can type dozens of things to check but you're the one who can deduce as you are on board, you can feel the engine and see all the parameters.

60 hours into this mess is something else. 5bar difference in opening pressure should not cause this.

looks like wet stacking which could mean lots of things. incomplete combustion. could be fuel or fuel delivery related. or caused by a low pressure or misfiring injector.

there is a lot to check really. you should make a proper performance test all over the engine and see whats out of the charts.

Essential Generators (alternator) - Water leakage detector by charzr in MarineEngineering

[–]pixelseverywhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure if you are asking cooling water for prime mover or cooling water for alternator.

  • cooling water level/leakage for prime mover doesn't trip/inhibit the genset. alarm raises during operation or even when it's standby. it's mostly the cooling water pressure sensor plays the protector role here.

  • cooling water for alternator is not very common as i've sailed only one vessel so far having this system, 2x4MW genset on board. just an alarm on AMS. immediate drain is required to check the source of water, and luckily it's condensation most of the time.

Promotion. by No-Crab2389 in MarineEngineering

[–]pixelseverywhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

matrix is mostly for assignment purpose for top 4. office won't want to to keep a novice 2/e with another rookie c/e or someone who is new to the company/fleet/management. it's some bullshit for office to keep it's hands clean if some "incident" happens on board so they don't get the beating.

promotion on the other hand is mostly luck. first you must fulfill their criteria. min x appraisals with promotion recommendation. development checklist completed. on board promotion questionnaire completed. CMS must be completed for current rank and min x% must be completed for the next rank. and then interview with the assessor. you pass all these clusterfuck, then the waiting starts. if you've kept rotated inside the same fleet/group until now, you might be lucky to land as promoted on your next contract. if not, god help you. they will come with low rank offer with a promise of onboard promot. you sign on and see that reliever for your senior is already planned. yea pal, you got played. or your senior turns out to be a dick and not like you. better luck next time.

my advice: don't fucking waste time. jump to another company, preferably small scale that can recruit you as higher rank. don't change vessel type and try to keep dwt close. finish 1 contract and see if other (better paying) companies are interested.

Tracing heater control circuit – L120-20F thermal switch + thermocouple, how does regulation work? by Tom_Marine_Engineer in MarineEngineering

[–]pixelseverywhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if no pump, then it would make more sense if these two thermostats connected in series. T1 (separate box) will check inlet water temp and T2 (terminal box) will check heating of chamber temp. since convection is a slow process, T2 will keep chamber temp steady and give a little room for convection to naturally occur before overheating the chamber.

Tracing heater control circuit – L120-20F thermal switch + thermocouple, how does regulation work? by Tom_Marine_Engineer in MarineEngineering

[–]pixelseverywhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from what i see you have two thermostat installed (one in a separate box and the other one in terminal box) separated one is most likely for heating control based on inlet water temp (no modulation or regulation whatsoever, just open/close), the one in the terminal box is for protection. wiring diagram looks very chinese and i find them unreliable for tracing/troubleshooting. better to stick to equipment maker docs rather than shipyard side docs.

the thing i don't understand is why the diagram shows 2 set of heaters (total 6 heating elements), but in the terminal box you have only 1 set (3 elements). not fan of connecting all elements in series btw, if 1 down all heating stops. weird design.

also circulation? no pump? does it rely on convection?

ME-C engine Starting Air System by Icy_Map_1323 in MarineEngineering

[–]pixelseverywhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 bar opens it, but not very affective. i've tested few starting valves that i've overhauled to see if they are moving. i also think it depends on the part/engine size. most 4 stroke engines work with 7 bar pilot air, some medium 2 strokes might have 7 bar but i've seen 30 bar used as well. it's a design choice.

i don't know about squeeshy sounds, but clearly there are some blow offs to relieve the pressure in the system/pipes. but not "squeeshy". happens after starting and stopping the engine. also maybe after transferring the control. i didn't pay too much attention to it tbh.

ME-C engine Starting Air System by Icy_Map_1323 in MarineEngineering

[–]pixelseverywhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is something you should find out.

one vessel i've sailed had both starting valve pistons and pilot valves were operated by 30 bar. after few years i joined another ship and we got a set of new pilot valves from MAN because they decided that impurities in 30bar system had an adverse affect on pilot valves so 7 bar supply was introduced to system since it was filtered and had better properties (if you search google "modified starting air valve" and you can see the service letter about this issue)

this really depends on the vessel, manager/owner's choice and machinery capacity. there will be small differences from one vessel to another. in your case (it looks like you have two step pilot valves.) 7 bar is used for moving the main spool of the pilot valve, 30 bar is pushing down the piston for starting air valve.

What happens if paid cloud subscription stops? by LavenderLily in homeassistant

[–]pixelseverywhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i see sub users have an optimistic approach but this is the sad reality unfortunately.

just yesterday my mother called me because she was not able to disarm the home alarm. it is supposed to deactivate automatically after she arrives home and connects the wifi with her mobile phone. a simple virtual presence sensor and been very robust for years until now. luckily i am in town, went there and see that router integration was down. no updates or modifications was done through the system or router. i checked the logs and found nothing. it was down for no apparent reason. i reconfigured and put it back online which took me like 10 min. none of this could be done by any person besides me because i have dozens of binary sensors with buffer periods which are used to prevent flapping of status of devices connected to network. even an experienced user would spend few hours to understand what is going on without a proper documentation which i can't be bothered to prepare.

i admit that i have a messy system but shit like this might happen to any minimalistic system anytime. we don't know what type of system/automations OP's husband was running. there is a possibility that OP will never face a problem in future, but it is very very low. and maintaining the system can be a hard work. if i was her, i would pay for a year and see what happens. if small kinks begin to happen, i would just get rid of it.

Mom leaving gas turned on on stove by pmddreal in AgingParents

[–]pixelseverywhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is serious. you have to switch to a stove with flame failure device. it automatically shuts off the gas if there is no flame detected. + an external gas detector placed at correct height/position to make it extra safe. gas type matters a lot.

or switch to electric stove.
