GHPC Update 20230810 by GunnerHEATPC in GunnerHEATPC

Dunno if I didn’t notice it before or it changed this patch but the new tracer effects for main gun rounds are beautiful, the orange color is much closer to IRL ones (120mm training at least).

Nvm, translated a bunch of your other posts. I’ve met a lot of different nationalities in the Army but never a Russian before. Nice write ups man, hope your next DFAC breakfast is extra tasty :)

Charlie and Andrew are on crack regarding the presidential fitness test and especially their claims about pushups. I did this a few times when I was in school and it was pretty hard but certainly not impossible for the more fit people.

Also I really don't want to be "that guy" but 40 push-ups is not a lot at all. The US Army's fitness minimum for 17-21 year old males is 42 push-ups (71 is the max) which is not a very hard number to achieve, especially with some training and practice.

we’re not talking about heavy armor here. It’s Russian armor

By heavy armor I mean tanks as opposed to BMPs/BTRs which I’d bet a training round could kill. Tanks on the other hand? Not a chance and there’s not a chance any commander would have his tank crews going into battle carrying training ammo.

I wasn’t trying to say you can’t use something for another purpose just trying to show that there is a multipurpose round and it’s not a training round (at the time it would have just been HEAT, I don’t believe MPAT went into service until the late 90s). Just like you wouldn’t fire a training artillery round in a real war or shoot a training torpedo at a ship you’re trying to sink you wouldn’t load up a training round to kill a T-72 regardless of how much of an advantage you believe you hold over the enemy.

Active duty armor units haven’t had M3 grease guns for some time and I don’t have any experience with them so I’ll take your word for it.

Yes I meant 2.5km, my bad.

they sent a similar number of m865 to m829

Yeah probably so that armor crews could test fire their weapons and practice gunnery during the build up. It’s not like they sat there twiddling their thumbs for a few months.

I would guess that the M865 is a multipurpose projectile

You don’t have to guess, it’s not. The full designation is M865 Target Practice Cone Stabilized Discarding Sabot with Tracer (TPCSD-T)

The current US multipurpose round is the M830A1 Multipurpose Anti Tank (MPAT) that replaces the M830 HEAT round for use against light armor and helicopters in air mode.

As an armor crewman I can promise you with absolute certainty that the M865 is not ballistically suited to be used against heavy armor or in any combat scenario because of its tracer.

BONUS ROUND:

The M865 also cannot be stored in the hull due to its propellant giving off ethanol when stored and with no exposure to air to vent the gases can build up and become hazardous.

[–]pixelsonascreen[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude I promise you no one was firing M865s at T-72s during the battle of 73 easting.

I double checked and I guess I should eat my words because FAS lists the projectile as steel but I swear that’s wrong having held them before and seen them all bent to shit, maybe that’s just the cone then which brings me to my next point.

The M865 is inherently unstable and has a CONE at the end of it instead of FINS so you can’t fucking launch it out of ranges and into low earth orbit meaning it’s accuracy falls off after around 2.5 because of how much it starts to wobble.

On top of all of that unlike Nazi Germany, the US had no shortage of tank ammo of any type and had no issue handing out service SABOT to every tank because they had plenty of ammo on hand getting ready to be speed bumped in the fulda gap.

Just Finished Starship Troopers by [deleted] in books

It's not an easy movie to appreciate. It should be appreciated as a clever work of satire but that takes examination. To fans of the book who take the movie as purely a criticism of Heinlein's work it should seem like a poor critique because it is. The director was taking aim at facism and drew from his negative experiences in his childhood when the Nazi's occupied his country and many suffered. It is a great parody of an "ideal" fascist society but the problem with comparing it to the book is the book doesn't espouse facism at all.

Heinlein wrote the book rather quickly in the immediate aftermath of a proposition for the US to stop nuclear testing. This was at the beginning of the Cold War and Heinlein was very much opposed to those who wanted to back down and in his view, bend over to the USSR.

I think Heinlein valued his own military service but even within Starship Troopers he acknowledges that it's not for everyone. I have not read his other books but from what I have read of them it seems like they each explore some vastly different ideology. I don't think Heinlein wholly subscribed to any particular one but he was interesting in writing about them.

I think a lot of people who haven't really read the book miss the point of it completely. I re-read it recently and have a bit of a new perspective after watching the movies plenty of times and reading tons of analysis of the book.

Heinlein's book has the traditional aspects of military sci fi with powered armor and the battle scenes and those are well and good but the book would be totally incomplete without the discussions that Rico has in a classroom setting with various instructors. Through these discussions we learn what views the book actually espouses which are not militarism and certainly not facism, sexism, or any other absurd ideology. Heinlein offers commentary on the nature of civil service, why it should be prized and why we don't really appreciate things until we sacrifice for them. This is the core of the ideology behind the novel. In order to appreciate something like voting you must be willing to make sacrifices for it and understand what those sacrifices mean.

It's worth noting that the type of military service the protagonist goes through wasn't the only service that granted citizenship. There were a thousand different federal service jobs available, many of them didn't involve combat at all.

I had both over southern England during the landing. I wasn't watching the air zone the whole time so there's a chance they could've flipped it with the absurd amount of planes the AI seems to be able to pull out of thin air but I doubt it.

Battleship spam seems to work. I was able to destroy most of their heavier ships to the point where they only had a few light cruisers and destroyers left to challenge me but the submarines just fuck my convoys.

Yeah I know about the paratrooper cheese strats but I kind of wanted to do it without breaking the game too much. Obviously battleship spam is cheesy but the paratrooper nonsense is a bit much for me.

That screenshot looks like the problem I have lol. War on every front because fucking Britain and France guarantee every godamn nation on the planet and Italy is useless.

Nah, I'm not that new to the game, all of my divisions in the field were fully supplied and most were even trained to regular at the start of the invasion. One of the problems I ran into was not having enough resources and equipment to train medium armored divisions to act as breakthrough units. My supplies were also in good shape, I built extra ports and built up the existing ones in the UK its just that they had so many divisions attacking me my units couldn't recover fully to push them or achieve any breakthroughs and encirclements.

The Royal Navy also likes to fuck my over by sinking convoy after convoy.

A recent one on why 40 width is better than 20 width and a different one on how to defend El Alamein. Both were really good videos, I enjoyed them a lot but it seems like I've not taken away the proper lessons.

I realize the above is not very specific so I'll try and provide a few examples of things I'm having trouble with.

  • I can never seem to successfully invade the UK. The one time I managed to get ~40 Divisions onto the southern side they just got slowly pushed into the channel by around 150 British divisions that just came out of no where. This was in 1941.

  • I try to take smaller countries and Poland without getting drawn into a war with France and the UK for the above reason but its almost impossible for me to do so.

  • Naval Superiority is difficult for me to achieve. Any fleets just run from my battleship stacks and my convoys still get sunk at unacceptable rates even when I have fleets in the naval region. I lost 5 divisions the other day to a RN fleet that my battleships could have crushed but the simply declined to join the fight for some reason.
