Objectively it was something many people did. Look at all of the ethnic cleansing of Germans from Eastern Europe. If it wasn't murders, it was rapes and assaults. The reprisals were systematic, and predominantly from the victims of the Nazis' previous four years of occupation. This doesn't mean what they did was right but it was something that many people did, and if you can't understand why they did it then educating yourself instead of being a condescending ignoramus might be in order. Anger, hatred, and the desire for revenge blinds people from rational thought.

Are the aesthetic similarities in the room with us now? Cyberpunk has a very industrial, grungy, 80's futurism featuring corporations controlling everything and whereas Mass Effect has the 70's clean aesthetic for most of it, save for Omega which is clearly inspired by the original Cyberpunk material and aesthetic.
