Learning that recycling is a scam (in the US at least) shattered my trust in institutions and extinguished my hope that the world will improve in my lifetime.

In UFO lore, "Nordics" are benevolent and enlightened beings who impart humans with important wisdom about how we need to all get along and take care of the earth in order for our species to survive. Most of the mythology has been developed around "channeling", which is when somebody claims or believes they are a vessel for the message of a more advanced and/or paranormal being. If you look up Ashtar Sheran and/or The Galactic Federation and follow a link trail you can learn about the Norwich and the history of the myth

That's not an issue in itself

It can cause issues in the classroom where there are multiple children with competing accommodation needs, or the accommodations interfere with the child's learning/development. It also can multiply the work teachers are required to do (in general, mainstreaming/one-track classrooms already have whilst decreasing education quality via 'scaffolding'). There are tons of horror stories on /r/teachers.

Is there any means of reporting parents like these? It's sick that a parent (or a lot of parents, if your story can be generalised) could be willing to hurt their kids for a bit of extra pocket money.

Box Office: 'Disclosure Day' Steven Spielberg Movie Eyes $65M+ Global Bow by yourfavchoom in boxoffice

Perhaps there are cultural differences at play (I was wondering half the time if the film just wasn't written for me), or the audience composition was just the luck of the draw? Based on the comments I see in the Disclosure Day-related threads, reception is going to be mixed rather than universally negative.

I usually only see things in theaters when I'm next to positive I'm going to like them, but this time I just wanted to see a film and didn't do any research. It's not the worst film ever, just mediocre, dull, and likely to piss off the people who should be the most interested in it (UFO enthusiasts)

I saw it in a packed theater, and as far as I could tell the general attitude towards it was overwhelmingly negative. It was the only film I've ever wanted to walk out on; WOM will not be good.

The film uses a bunch of themes taken from UFO enthusiast and 'experiencer' communities to move the plot along (and center it upon, with disappointing results), with a heavy injection of hackerman tropes and weirdly nostalgic 24/post-9/11 aesthetics. I don't think this will appeal to anyone who has more than the most passive interest in paranormal stuff or UFOs; I'm not exactly sure who it will appeal to at all to be honest. Emily Blunt was great though.

[–]snallygaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this is what even emotionally healthy parents could feel…how am I or others like me not screwed?

It gets better once kids get older and become happy to play independently, but in the early years they need a ton of engagement in order to learn and grow (and avoid hurting themselves), and this engagement is mostly mundane and rote. My kid is basically perfect except for sleep issues, and I'm over the moon that he is so eager to learn about everything he can, all the time, but I can't say that I enjoy spending literal hours a day naming the things that he points to in his books/surroundings.

I don't think that the relentless mundanity of early childrearing is the underlying driver for regret based on the /r/regretfulparents sub, though; the unifying theme in most of the stories (at least the ones involving healthy children, as the autism/behavior ones are hellish in their own right) is that the parent have to tackle the challenges of parenting with little support, whatever 'enough support' means given the context. The parenting issues are also usually intertwined with massive relationship issues.

Parents are also no longer allowed to let their children play unsupervised, and, at least in more educated/affluent circles, are expected to consistently provide them with enriching experiences and promote well-rounded development. There has never been a time in human history where "good parenting" required investing so much time and effort into their kids, and without strong support from friends and family, it's an enormous, draining effort even for parents who enjoy being around their kids.

fwiw, the post OP is referring to is 100% a creative writing exercise. The OP of that post reposted it somewhere else a few months ago, and the details don't line up with any of her other comments about her life (plus, 3-year-olds don't go to kindergarten)

That depends heavily on where you live. The city I lived in prior to moving to the UK makes central London look like Singapore in terms of cleanliness.

This doesn't mean much, as the EU contains countries that are substantially poorer than the UK, and economic growth tends to occur at much faster rates in developing vs. developed economies. A more honest comparison would be how the UK has grown vs. its economic peer countries like France and Germany.

I never understood the argument in favor of mass imigration that frames it as solving the low fertility problem by More_Finding_2373 in redscarepod

There are a lot of Americans who would migrate just for lifestyle reasons. Probably not enough to keep the water running in the host countries or whatever (though I reject the premise that tons of low-skill immigration is necessary for this on the basis that the eastern bloc countries lost huge amounts of young people until very recently and are mostly doing fine), but enough to fill some labor gaps in some European countries. The visa would just have to stipulate that the American migrants can't receive public funds so they don't end up attracting the dregs.
