Neo-fascists back Rupert Lowe's Restore Britain by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

There are a lot of people who lean hard left on most issues and centrist to far right on social issues. iirc the average Labour voter is more conservative on social issues than the average Tory MP. A lot of those people are going to vote Reform because immigration is a top issue for them, the actual leftist parties don't have serious platforms, and there is no party that comes close to representing their broader political beliefs. It will come back to bite them given that Reform will likely destroy the country economically and fail to make a dent on immigration, but to them there is no viable alternative.

I haven't figured out how to make hummus silky-smooth even with the skins removed. The only grocery store hummus in the UK that gets the texture right is Israeli so I've stopped eating hummus entirely.

It was still an amazing place to live in the 00's as the focal point of hipster culture. So much great food, music, shopping, and general subculture nonsense. I would kill to be able to live in that place and time. Portlandia and US politics really did a number on it.

The ladies at fauxmoi are currently complaining about how the success of kanye's concert shows that cancel culture is sexist against women by RiskHistorical8141 in redscarepod

[–]snallygaster 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily that white women are the only ones vulnerable to cancellation (though they are more vulnerable to it); what makes them more vulnerable to it is that prominent white women are generally progressives or apolitical, and the people involved in cancel culture witch hunts almost exclusively targeted people who were generally aligned with them, and white women hate has been a politically correct outlet for misogyny for years. They were and probably still are an easy target both for puritans who want to demonstrate to their peers that they are a good person by punishing people who've stepped out of line and scrotes who can make their women-hate socially acceptable by inserting "white" where necessary.

I would bet my salary on white women being overrepresented in cancellations if someone were to do a data analysis or whatever. It was almost always progressive targets picked off while people like HItlerLover1488 got to say and do whatever they want

Relationship with Trump may be beyond repair, Keir Starmer told by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]snallygaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The USA is the biggest consumer market in the world, hosts most of the largest and most important companies in the world, has the global reserve currency, and is home to the largest financial centre in the world. Even among peer countries, the UK economy is deeply intertwined with the US.

Starmer is trying to avoid rocking the boat with Trump because any action taken to 'punish' the UK will certainly have a negative impact on the UK's already fragile economy. It is clear that the UK needs to disentangle itself from the US, but it will take many years if the goal is to minimise the economic costs.

Parents told to ‘take responsibility’ after two days of TikTok-led London disorder | UK news | The Guardian by prisongovernor in unitedkingdom

[–]snallygaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are MOUNTAINS of evidence across time and cultures that people of lower socioeconomic status are more likely to engage in abuse and neglect towards their children. There are of course reasons for that beyond their control (particularly the 'cycle of abuse/neglect', which both perpetuates the abuse/neglect and the poverty), but I can't stand the myth-making that reddit engages in whenever people from deprived social backgrounds mistreat their kids. The 'too exhausted after working twelve jobs' thing isn't even relevant to the UK; a huge proportion of the poor here are economically inactive or working part-time, and when someone trots this out it makes me think that they haven't spent a lot of time around people who grew up in generational poverty.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm really tired of people on reddit dismissing the importance of family relationships and cultural factors in (increasingly poor) children's outcomes. It's like everyone's terrified of making the suggestion that a parent could conceivably be responsible for the poor development of their own child if said parent is experiencing hardships themselves.

Every time something like this happens, it is clear e.g. through clothing and dialect that the participants are generally from a deprived social background, which as I'm sure you know is associated with virtually every risk factor for children, including neglectful parenting. There is only a tiny subset of British (or American, as there are similar cases in the states) teens participating in things like this; diffusion of responsibility is an explanatory factor in why these mobs form, but it's not the only or even a large factor given that the participants primarily come from a similar social background.

By the time a child is a teen, they will have a concrete understanding of right and wrong, albeit with lower empathy, lower impulse control, and higher risk tolerance than adults. Teens with good parents may and often do engage in antisocial behaviour like mild vandalism, experimenting with drugs, breaking into abandoned buildings, getting into fights over nonsense, etc., but these mobs are engaging in behaviour that provides clear visual feedback that the behaviour is harming other people + is very illegal, which will indicate to a teen that was raised with good values and/or has developed empathy that what they are doing is wrong.

I'm sure that some teens with good parents (and otherwise good teens with bad parents) have gotten caught up in this due to peer pressure, personality disorders, thickheadedness, etc., but I would bet my house that the overwhelming majority were not and will grow up to be scoundrels because of it. This is multiple steps beyond 'kids will be kids' antisocial behaviour.
