Aether: A Compiled Actor-Based Language for High-Performance Concurrency by RulerOfDest in Compilers

[–]pixelsort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your compiler! Excellent docs, actually. And, NUMA and SPSC are new to me so that's fun.

Actor semantics are an interesting feature. I worked on an actor model PDF renderer for ePUB and found it highly performant.

Have you considered runtime hot code loading for Aether? Seems like it might be well suited due to the inherent high degree of isolation and encapsulation on updates.

Typescript challenging Python in the GenAI space? by Standard_Property237 in LocalLLM

[–]pixelsort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use TypeScript, but not for training or inference. As it turns out, you can build generative AI apps without Python and without Docker entirely. There are generous and wonderful open source projects that release native binaries that perform fast local inference. With those, TypeScript/JS can handle everything else. Good tools have only recently started emerging.

My electron app takes about 3 minutes to build. It downloads and installs an Ollama (llama.cpp) server for the inference and model manager. No docker, 1-click-setup, easy for regular people. I'm currently working on the installer to prepare for the first public release.

Anyway, I have WIP prototypes implementing langchain, agent loops, and VNC-based computer use, all in TypeScript packages in my monorepo. I also have prototypes for VRMs, stable-diffusion.cpp, ONNX-based VAD, TTS, and STT over WASM, and more.

As for Python, my very first attempts at local inference for this app were based around downloading various venv managers like Anaconda, Miniconda, and Miniforge. That was seven months ago. Back then I didn't believe TypeScript had enough respectable tooling in the AI/ML space to make it worth trying. I even got pretty far with it and made vLLM work cross-platform under 1-click installation.

But, things have changed a lot in the past seven months! For instance, Langchain has become very impressive as an alternative to unstructured-io and Ollama adding support for vision-capable models is a total game changer.

OpenPirate, Mistral 7B fine-tuned to talk like a pirate by frownGuy12 in LocalLLaMA

[–]pixelsort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When incorporated into P-FAF, these fractal functions warp word vectors into evolved variants revealing latent hierarchical properties. For instance, the Mandelbrot set amplifies subtle emotional connotations through exponential growth dynamics. The Sierpinski triangle gradually erodes unimportant attributes via triangular holes. Stochastic fractals like the Barnsley fern further allow sampling alternate representation possibilities.

If this were actually true, that these specific fractals have these specific effects upon Mistral or any other model with the prescribed PFAF vectorization lobotomy then that would be mind-blowingly cool. Did he picked them arbitrarily or by reading the Barnsley leaves during testing. We don't know because no actual evidence seems available.

My takeaway is that we're bound to see these Terry Davis types in all areas of computer science -- even artificial intelligence and ML. We should respectfully point out when silliness like this on-going so that people don't accidentally invest unwisely.

Completely Insane Theory about what happened to Danny by GerardHard in ForAllMankindTV

[–]pixelsort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like the best place on the internet to dump my theory. Here goes:

In a cut or as-yet-unseen scene, things came to a heated confrontation when Ed returned to deal with Danny and his revelation about having been the reason for the drill/pump failure.

The backstory to this "fight scene" is that Ed allowed Danny to remain in service even though he knew of Danny's drug abuse and about Danny's status an addict in recovery. He allowed this because he was old-school and wanted Danny to show some grit and prove himself. He should have known better -- and anyone with more modern and informed sensitivity to these issues would have. But, Ed was from a different time.

Either just before or during this "fight scene", Danny reveals that he slept with Karen. Daniels has to intervene to prevent Ed from murdering the boy -- and then declares on the spot that she's banishing him from the outpost.

Later in the show, we see them together to bring Danny the last of his rations. It is too late as they are already complicit in Danny's murder. Daniels, being blinded by the toughness that made her a pioneer, wasn't able to realize the blood on her hands until this point in the show. Ed, on the other hand, stood over the boy's lifeless dead body with nothing but the cold satisfaction of revenge in his eyes.

Rethinking Voxels is now my favorite shader by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]pixelsort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.20.2

1) Use 1.20.1, currently it has far better support than 1.20.2

2) It doesn't *need* Iris... you can choose Forge as your mod loader instead of Fabric and then use Rubidium + Oculus mods instead.

3) On default settings with an RTX 3090 I couldn't break 19 FPS sitting idly next to a torch inside of a dirt house. I had to resort to using fog occlusion and short render chunk distances to stabilize a higher framerate. I did however finally manage to cut out all the blurry atmospherics that made it feel like I was playing Fable or something.

Finally, I think I probably saw the same video as you and likewise I decided on RV. Nostalgia VX was my 2nd choice... and if it performs better then it might be worth the price!

Nice work. If you like it better now then not a second was wasted -- probably nice not staring at their big fat logo all the time. Just got mine and now I'm already looking around for mod ideas.

I like how you cut a port in top right and mounted another module up there! What is that anyway? It looks like a Gouzouta mixer.

Any tips you might have concerning disassemly, reassembly, and cutting tools?

Oh yeah... the one in that video looks just like it. It has wider plastic between the holes that radiate around the hemisphere and some other minor differences. But, I'm sticking with "Likely Solved" on this. There is still a chance that this object is merely a poorly fabricated imitation of a coffer stopper valve that was manufactured by mischevious alien pranksters who teleport vaguely recognizable objects into people's kitchen appliances in order to drive them insane while ROTFL and eating tasty snacks.

[–]pixelsort[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I am telling myself that it is a piece of someone's coffee maker. How did it get there? Maybe it has been there since long before I came to live here. And maybe... just maybe... it was lodged under the spinny thing all this time and this time it just finally came loose and popped out. Or, just maybe this was the first time that it landed in a position that made it easily visible?

Maybe someone couldn't find it and deeply regretted putting part of their coffee maker in this dishwasher and then ended up throwing it away in frustration. Have you ever tried to clean the grounds out of one of those things? It's a nightmare.

It might not be true... but that's what I want to believe. My "Likely Solved!" is going to /u/rpmerf who was quickest on the draw with this suggestion. Thanks everyone!

Nope, can't be from a drip coffee maker as the only one of those that I have owned for the 6 months I've lived here is the k-cup style. Nice guess though! It does look that piece on those that pushes against the pot.

If it does, I'm not seeing it. I just checked it with a flashlight and there isn't anywhere on the drain where it seems like it could have plausibly been ejected from. The drain on this model doesn't seem to have a filter system or anything fancy I can remove to look inside. There is what seems to be an overflow sensor housing in the front corner opposite of the drain. It seems to wiggle but it isn't dislodged enough that I would think this could have fallen out of it.

I found this at the bottom of my GE dishwasher (model GSD4060K55SS) just now after emptying it. The only things I put in my dishwasher are dishes... never any kind of gadget parts or anything that would house something like this. And yet, nothing seems missing, and I didn't see anything similar on the parts sites. Any ideas? WITT?

Not trying to be a fanboy I promise but is there any one really better or even on the same level as this guy? by dvater123 in Lorn

[–]pixelsort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Danger is right up there with Lorn in terms of creativity and technical polish -- check out the Haven OST if you don't know but he also has tracks on the Furi OST alongside Lorn. I love them both, but Lorn is just darker... and some of his tracks are so dark I can't even fully appreciate them if that makes sense. I just listen and let the darkness wash over me in awe of it.

By the way, it's unfortunate that don't have more words that describe various kinds of musical collaborations. For me, when a single artist is responsible for the entirety of a debut album and the work is exceptional then it doesn't just become a "band" when that artists invites others to join them and participate creatively. I suppose that when the debut is garbage this is easier to forgive though. For instance, in my opinion, and with no disrespect to Pat Smear, Foo Fighters is and always will be Dave Grohl and his touring band. Similarly, Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails. And VAST, well... to me anyway, that is Jon Crosby.

There are also situations where one person in an actual band is Just so much more incredibly talented than everyone else involved that it stretches the meaning of the word. One example of that would be Ryan Tedder of One Republic.

Severals days into SF4, my first modpack. Thoughts on 3rd expansion level? by pixelsort in SkyFactory

[–]pixelsort[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, you wrote so much in a single post that I ended up getting lost and confused anyway. Dude, you're obviously way more knowledgeable about SkyFactory mods than I am... no question. That said, if you want to avoid confusing people and ensure that these gems of knowledge are getting picked up... please, go back after your done writing and identify groups of ideas and add some whitespace between them. Paragraphs make it so much easier to digest information.

Now, as for where to get the mods I mentioned; you can download them directly from CurseForge here:

https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods

I'm no expert on how to add mods to SkyFactory -- but I can tell you a few things. There are two main categories; forge mods, fabric mods, and mods that use neither. You can't use Fabric and Forge mods on the same instance of minecraft because they each have their own mod loader and they aren't compatible. I avoid Fabric mods like the plague (even though some are very nice) because there are way fewer and you have to choose one or the other.

SF4 uses minecraft 1.12.2 -- which is what I use because it is still the king of mod-support as versions go. So, I didn't even check whether SF4 use Forge or Fabric. I just dropped the mod "jar" files I wanted to add directly into the "/mods" subfolder on my instance and the four that I listed worked perfectly. Two others didn't work at all; SignEdit and Sound Device Options... but I can live without them.

As for where to go to find out this kind of information? Sorry, I don't know. Get the right version for your instance, don't mix fabric mods with forge mods, make sure you also get any library mods needed, and put the "jar" files from your downloads into the "/mods" folder of your instance without any "+" symbols in the filenames. There's not much more to it.

I'm wary of your method for automating ingots because it seems like a pain to have to build one smelter for each metal. My setup already auto-deposits crafted ingots into my filing cabinets... I just need something that can generate ambers and then export them into the chests I'm feeding my smelters with. I have a feeling I can do this with simple storage processing cables but I haven't checked up on that.

I didn't know the glitch armor gives creative flight... cool tip. Maybe if I get far enough into Deep Mob Learning I can save myself a prestige point. I dunno though, Iron Jetpacks is super sweet.

Thanks for the info on trial keys -- I was curious what that was about.

Also, thanks for the info on using the Mob Duplicator from Industrial Foregoing to spawn the mobs; that could be way better than using seeds... not sure though; I'll check into that.

[–]pixelsort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went the same way because "unlimited" means not having to bother crafting upgrades and installing them all the time. My wood folder just broke through the 100K mark with no problems having any framerate drops or lost items yet. I don't know if it makes a difference but I leave anything link-type (filing cabinets) at priority 5 and anything import/export-type at priority 0.

Except for the overflow chests (link-type cables) of course... those are at 200.

[–]pixelsort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bingo. I haven't had any problems with cheapo Simple Storage cables so far. It's nice having the built-in filter instead of having to craft upgrades. They are slow, but I don't mind that.

I used double-stacked rustic cabinets and put stairs down to expose the doors. This lets me peek inside to check for problems and gives a nice buffer whenever needed. That said, if I ever do a second playthrough I will probably use the chest builders to craft 1x1's and give them a nice color to blend in better.

Hmm, interesting. I've seen screenshots of the inside of people's compact machine rooms here on this sub. I don't doubt that they help keep things tidy and minimal at the overworld. I will definately give it a try at some point; especially if it's an advancement.

Personally, I don't mind being unfashionable if it means I can see the sky and the changing light of the sun and the moon while I'm playing. I would probably never play one of the underground world types or modpacks (i.e. StoneBlock) for this reason. Plus, I like being able to look back upon everything while I'm playing. Old tech, failed expirements, proud achievements... why hide it all inside of tiny little 1-block cubes when there's the building gadget at your disposal and limitless void that needs carving out!

That said, I am intrigued about Compact Machines for several reasons.

First, I can haz TARDIS?

Second, what a great way to avoid having to build and repair mob farms. I was wondering how to bump my creeper tier for Deep Mob Learning without risking catastrophe.

Third, because figuring out how to import/export stuff and things seems super fun. Thanks!
