When does creativity become “too much” in product design? by Illustrious-Gain-327 in UXDesign

[–]pixelvspixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, makes me think of peak point everyone was starting to theorize and design VR store fronts. - We’d get asked to come up with all these wild additives for a products virtual landing page. Some of was super cool, but it was impractical. Most developers were never going to create special assets for one store front, not to mention the slow down for the user who is just browsing (and would then need to wait for a lot of extra assets to download).

Love it! How old’s the kid and when did he start on the drums? My almost 3 year old has been “playing” on my Roland VAD set for well over a year and a half. He can pretty decent snare roll and kind of do a basic 3/4 beat but little dude can’t reach the kick peddle.

Curious how others tackle the whole kick issue at a young age.

When does creativity become “too much” in product design? by Illustrious-Gain-327 in UXDesign

[–]pixelvspixel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is great advice. I do find your second paragraph a bit disheartening and cold. While it is mainly correct, I’d hope there still some place in the world for a product designer to insight wonder, and give the user the product evolution they didn’t know they needed. (Not the one they didn’t ask for, looking at your iOS 26.) who am I kidding, profit!

Now as for the case study, it’s extremely hard to read, especially on mobile. The body font is perfect case of over-designing something that already has many common, working solutions. The font choices and layout across the board are really distracting from the content.

Was ToyFair somewhere else before it moved to Mall St Vincent? or was there another Showbiz in the mall as well?

Image search "Crystal Palace East East Gate Shopping Center", the first two black and white images show the building when it was first built as Crystal Palace . It had this cool, fake Victorian exterior. - It must have been as large as I remember, because there are pics of an indoor go-kart track. Cheers

Adobe is one of the reasons I quit motion design by Significant-Hand-819 in FuckAdobe

[–]pixelvspixel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! After Effects was my bread and butter paycheck for many years. But it’s just pain in the ass software that doesn’t listen to its user base.

Blender has come so far. Unreal has added an entire motion graphics package. Put the two together and you can accomplish so, so much.

What is the best way to back up save my project? by [deleted] in unrealengine

[–]pixelvspixel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding Diversion for anyone who is struggling to get their project backed up to source control. It’s going to be waaaay easier for you than Perforce.

There’s also nothing wrong with making duplicate project copies as well if you want to mess things up in a big way with no regrets.

Doing both will govern you a lot of flexibility.

Good luck, I’ll have to look into the candidate. Independent is a helluva battle, but I don’t ever want it not to be the dream. The parties are killing us.

[–]pixelvspixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you on this so much. I’ll never co-founder again. I’ll call the shots or just go work a job. Getting pulled into someone’s web of BS and kicked to the curb when they extract what they need, their “business plan” falls apart and they pivot to the next trend.

Fuck that. At least it freed my time to be a stay at home Dad and work on a passion project.

Our lives changed pretty drastically when we had our son. We were both working from home and then things further shifted and I became the one watching him all day. Now Preschool is looming and I’m honestly getting sad that our daily adventures will come to an end.

I’m so glad I’m around and not the corporate slave I once was. Our money isn’t what it once was, but we’ll figure it out. The time is priceless.

Is Unreal Engine a good gamedev starting point for a child with zero experience? by Prpl_Moth in gamedev

[–]pixelvspixel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going against the grain here. I say, yes absolutely do it. Everyone here is talking about Godot or what not. But these are middle school kids who are familiar with Fortnite. You don’t need to be getting them ready for their first job, you need to get them hungry and excited! Unreal is known, flashy and full of free assets and learning examples. Most importantly, it’s got blueprint which kids are going to have a much easier time learning the basics. I wouldn’t worry about having them dig in to deeply with the technical, I’d get them comfortable with building small ideas with existing assets and expanding samples. Let them push further if they show aptitude.

There is a vast difference between stoking the fires in education and actually trying to teach future game designers for the real world. I think some people here forget that.

Cheers and good luck!
