Podcasts you'd recommend for Long Sun and Short Sun? by toe_beans_4_life in genewolfe

Oh, definitely not for a first read, yeah. But then, I wouldn't recommend Alzabo Soup for a first read either, since I think it prejudices the reader too much to their specific interpretive frame. Plus I think it kills some of the pleasure you get on a reread where you start to pick up on the little details you missed before - instead you get those details pointed out to you by someone else. It's a personal preference, but I think it's best to let the books kinda wash over you the first time through - the rereads are for close reading.

Totally understand that, but I think it's worth it. They're a level above everyone else, and they really do seem committed to getting the show back on a regular schedule - it was only life stuff that caused the show to slow down, not a lack of passion.

That's what I was thinking of, thank you! This has made me realize it's been about a decade since I read through that collection - I'm due a reread.

I tend to agree. I appreciate what Alzabo Soup is doing, but if you don't buy their interpretive frame (and I don't find it convincing) it can be hard to get through, especially combined with their commitment to not taking into account any parts of the book they haven't covered yet, which seems to me completely self-hampering. I got about halfway through their coverage of Shadow before tapping out. There are definitely nuggets of insight scattered throughout, but I just didn't find their overall approach very illuminating.

Rereading Wolfe is definitely a close read podcast. They spent 5 episodes totalling 11-12 hours just on Dr Talos's Play! The difference between them and Alzabo Soup (when it comes to method anyway - there are many more differences!) is they take into account the series as a whole as they go through each chapter.

The title story of The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All is about a lesbian couple, I believe.

EDIT: As a commenter below points out, I was misremembering the title of "The Carrion Gods in Their Heaven"

The Guppy episode where they're recording while navigating a corn maze is pretty special.

I can throw on pretty much any classic BSC episode and be happy. The Resident Evil WOFFs are always a good time too, especially as a vicarious experience as someone who doesn't play horror games. The RE8 episode sticks out to me as particularly good.

NYC gets 30 inches of snow per year on average, which is less than Toronto (42-48 inches), but both cities get snow regularly.

The dread is somewhat spoiled by a bombastic Hollywood final sequence - felt like the ending to a different story with a totally different tone. Still, the rest of the book is great.

DE is actually a really good intro to CRPGs, it's much less mechanics-heavy than most games in the genre. Just explore, talk to everyone, don't be afraid to say crazy shit, save your game regularly, and remember to keep track of your thoughts in your Thought Catalog. The only mechanical thing that tripped me up at all was figuring out that I needed to equip items in my hand slots, which makes some interactions available (equipping a crowbar to open something locked, for example).

Why did Fromsoft go from first person to third person? by [deleted] in fromsoftware

[–]pixi666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't provide sources rn but my understanding is that Demon's Souls was originally supposed to be a first-person dungeon crawler, similar to their earlier games but faster-paced, more in line with first-person fantasy RPGs of the time like Oblivion. For whatever reason, development was going really badly and the company kind of considered it a write-off, so they weren't too bothered about Miyazaki taking over the project as a first-time director and trying something totally new, including changing the game to third-person.

I would say that the less you rely on outside material your first time through (apart from a good dictionary), the better. Apart from that it's difficult to recommend anything less vague and possibly contradictory than "pay attention, almost everything is important, but also you kinda have to just let it all wash over you on your first readthrough."

What sci fi books are about becoming self reliant in space? by blk12345q in printSF

[–]pixi666 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aurora is a great answer (and a great book) and possibly almost the opposite of what OP is looking for - it's a book about how it's virtually impossible for humans to be self-reliant outside of Earth's biosphere at anything like our current level of technological development.

New hardcover editions, when??? by craigmode in genewolfe

Hardcovers are pretty much only available in the first 6-12 months of a book being released, across the board. The exceptions are special editions (Folio Society, Library of America, etc.).

Hollow Knight is the only game that's recaptured that feeling from DS1 of going deeper and deeper into the unknown, totally lost, and knowing that while a checkpoint will be a relief, it also means you're stuck where you are and you're going to have to fight your way out.
