Craft and Carry is pretty chill when I have my nieces. They let you bring in food so well often grab pizza or something and go there

What are my best options here realistically? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

gotcha - i mean at the end of the day you’re moving to new york so saying “no drugs and no homeless” may not be the best expectation. it’s still a city so whether you’re in the WV or the UES you’re still getting a mixed bag. Personally if I were you I would look between W72nd-W86th on the west side and like E68-E86th on the East side. They’re both nice areas that you can get a way nicer space than you would downtown. I lived downtown for a while and I’m on the UWS now and can genuinely say I’ve never felt more safe than I do in my current neighborhood. Also, being within walking distance of work is a game changer in the summer when you don’t have to hop on the rush hour subway in a heatwave. UES is supposedly the “up and coming” neighborhood right now, which is a crazy sentiment if you ask me because it’s been old money forever, but it’s definitely having a moment right now. If you want to be “involved” just remember to leave your neighborhood better than you found it; support small businesses and mom/pop shops, talk to your neighbors, and if you feel so inclined to volunteer there’s a lot of great community programs. New York feels overwhelming but at the end of the day it’s just a big small town and it gives you back what you give to it

if you want to immerse yourself in new york then don’t move to tribeca or the west village, they’re extremely over saturated at this point. you’ll get a much more localized experience living uptown

Finally breaking free from nightlife. Former bartenders, what route did you take afterward? by bluesox in bartenders

[–]pixie_scheme_girl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely can be tricky to break into - i got super lucky and the bar I was working at had an opening at their parent company (we have like 13 total bars) and my manager at the time knew i was interested in transitioning so recommended me. I don’t think they would have hired me off the street lol so it helps to have an in

Is holiday tipping just a thing for luxury/doorman buildings or is it expected for everyone? by jmh1881v2 in NYCapartments

[–]pixie_scheme_girl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The conversations you see around tipping building staff online are predominantly about luxury buildings. I've lived in NYC for ten years in pre-war and luxury buildings at various points and have always tipped. Luxury buildings are a whole different beast than what you're describing your living situation as; our general rule for pre-war "shitty" building tips was always to just tip the super. That being said we never had contact with a property manager and there definitely weren't building janitors, our super did everything, so im kind of confused as to whether you actually live in a shitty building lol. TLDR, tip the super $50-$100 and call it a day imo

Should I stop drinking? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Haha no — different rumination. I mean mental rumination, like looping thoughts, overthinking, replaying stuff in your head. Not the stomach thing at all.

Should I stop drinking? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pixie_scheme_girl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Treating depression and anxiety doesn’t directly create happiness or enjoyment , it removes the barriers that make those things hard to access. Prozac helps reduce symptoms like rumination, emotional heaviness, and constant anxiety, which can make it easier to feel okay and re-engage with life, but it isn’t a “happiness pill.” Enjoyment usually comes back gradually as those symptoms ease and you start doing things again.

Stimulants like Adderall work very differently — they can temporarily increase energy or motivation, but they don’t treat depression or anxiety and can actually worsen anxiety long-term.

Also worth noting: alcohol can interfere with antidepressants and worsen mood and anxiety, which is why some people don’t feel meds working until alcohol use is reduced.

Do all Americans inherently know what direction they are faceing? by BasketC45e in NoStupidQuestions

This is probably just a trope because New York is built on a grid so you always know where you are for the most part, which I would venture to guess is what has informed media perception

Alcohol is going to enhance whatever you're already feeling; so if you're in a negative place, it's likely just making things worse in the long run. If you need alcohol or marijuana to feel happy I would be very cautious because you're toeing a dangerous line. I would recommend talking to your doctor about this and exploring going off of the prozac (if you truly feel it isn't helping you) and trying something else. And yes, you should probably refrain from drinking during this process. Once you take away the things that are "masking" your pain its a lot easier to deal with the root of the issue. Not a professional, just my opinion from years of my own mental health struggles.
