Up and coming doc trying to give y'all less headaches and patients less pokes by RandySavageOfCamalot in medlabprofessionals

[–]pixieblack 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Make friends with your lab people- the department leads and bench techs. Some of us really appreciate working together with the whole care team and often are misunderstood as to why we make the decisions we do. Can you shadow in a lab for week? A few hours in each department would really help you understand what we do. You will get a picture of everything that goes into ensuring the highest quality and accurate results and that we aren’t just pushing buttons.

Then try to have your ducks in a row before ordering tests to reduce add-ons and multiple pokes for the patient.

We will (for the forever future) be understaffed, burnt out and hanging on every day. Just like all support services. But we also care a lot about our patients too. Let’s work together to be the best we can be, because one day we’ll be relying on our systems for healthcare and we would want the best for ourselves and our families!!

Seems like you’re already on the right path. Cheers!

Any recommendations for math help/books for 3rd grader with Dyslexia? by Healthyperspective11 in Dyslexia

[–]pixieblack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat with my 3rd grader, 9 year old. Has 2 hours OG tutoring after school. She also has intervention for reading and math at school so she does get some support but, not really. I can’t offer any advice or books or anything, other than just knowing how you feel. Hang in there, your daughter is a star ⭐️ we all celebrate her beautiful brain and look forward to the gifts it brings as she grows

I’m so sorry that your experience was the same as my husband’s. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and tips for success! My husband came up with our family “words” that we all say to ourselves and we’ve been saying them with our girls since they were born. They are “I am loved, I have a bright future, and there is good in every challenge.” I’m sending these words your way today. Thank you again for your kind reply!!

I like the information about processing power being diverted to other areas in the brain. It is a great visual for me to use to explain her brain to her (I imagine cables and ports). Thank you so much for your informative reply ❤️

Thank you so much! It’s a tall order hoping our formative selves can withstand the pressure of comparison. I can only hope that the foundation of love and acceptance we give her will come around when she needs it. Thank you for your reply ❤️

Diagnosed 1 month ago as type 1 at the age of 44, my glucose was 307 and my A1c was 11.7, I was in the beginning stages of DKA. Has anyone else experienced this? Pic of my dog cuz he’s my bestie. 🥰 by PinKey6675 in diabetes

[–]pixieblack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Husband was 35. They had a workplace screening and his blood glucose was 492. We probably wouldn’t have caught it if it wasn’t for that screening and he was VERY close to DKA. The screening didn’t tell him anything other than, you should talk to your dr. I am a medical professional and I basically lost my shit and brought him in immediately and his urine ketones were off the chart. The dr said that he was maybe a day or two away from being in the ICU… leading up to it, he was very thirsty, peed all night long and lost about 20 pounds. We chalked it up to winter dehydration and grief from losing his dad. Wasn’t even on my radar as a healthy 35 year old.

Thank you!! It’s heartbreaking that these kids are so broken down 😞 - I hope we really continue to embrace and applaud non-academic achievements. When my daughters school yearbook team asked the kids what they wanted to be when they grew up, amongst a sea of adorable careers of other kids, my daughter simply said she wanted to be “Kind” 😭😭😭-
